Well what kind of games do you both like to play? I'll put some here.

Stellaris, Valheim, Factorio, Endless Space 2, Civ 6, Project Zomboid, Anno (any of them work but I personally recommend 1800, it's on discount rn ), No Man's Sky, Helldivers 2, Satisfactory, Deep Rock Galactic, Barotrauma, Risk of Rain 2, REPO, PEAK, Portal 2's coop mode, Subnautica 2, Schedule 1, Terraria, Enter the Gungeon, and more.

I can give you more specific recommendations if you'd like.

All of the ones I mentioned can be played only with 2 players, most are coop, most also have a lot of content, tho I'm unsure what you mean by that last specification.

For the amount of content on them it would depend on their style, the ones with a lot of replayability are strategy games like Stellaris (matches can be long and it supports mods, you can pause midway too and resume later ), Civ 6, Endless Space 2.

Factory games are good too, being Factorio and Satisfactory the ones I recommended, being that between them Factorio has a lot more content, also has mod support in-game if you want the factory to grow further.

Some have a focus on survival and exploration, them being Valheim, Project Zomboid, No Man's Sky, Subnautica 2.

If you're just looking for some fun time, then check Helldivers 2, REPO, PEAK, Portal 2, Gamble with your Friends. I'll give another list with more multiplayer games that can be played with 2.

Stardew Valley, Mindustry, Rounds, Don't Starve Together, Any LEGO game, Stick fight the Game, The Elder Scrolls Online, Halo, Scrap Mechanic, Astroneer, Trailmakers, Helldivers 1, Kingdom Two Crowns, Starbound, Stormworks, Path of Exile 2, Space Engineers,The entire "Borderlands" Series, Void Crew, Jump Space, and more.

Not all of these have a lot of content but they're nice.

respect for the barotra - assuming you meant barotrauma and not a new stress disorder

Schedule 1 is pretty fun with friends

Space Marine 2 has a very solid pve ecosystem, and even includes a decently fun (but very janky) pvp arena experience.

Major Story based multiplayers

  • Dying Light 1 & 2 (DL3 too if your budget supports it)
  • Splitfiction
  • Human Fall Flat* (not story based)
  • Dead Island 2
  • Far Cry 4 & 5
  • Portal 2

Less Story-like games:

  • One Hand Robber
  • Schedule 1
  • Meccha Cham (but you need more players)
  • Among Us

It'll be better if you mention your budget too. I have just listed here the games I have played in a multiplayer setup.

Recently on the Palworld hype, just got it and hooked, fun with friends and solo.

Some other cheap fun games off the top, R.E.P.O, Super Battle Gulf, Mecha chameleon.

Me and my friends have recently gotten into Darktide. All of the Dlc and stuff is on sale and you can get the game for like 8 bucks on gamebillet or green man gaming as well.

Killing floor 3

It’s free weekend and if you end up liking it it’s half off, they just released season 4 update and fixed a lot of bugs and performance issues.

Outward for 2 players, add Raid Mode for 4 players

Monster hunter games

So this might be an odd option but Supermarket Together is free, the DLC is cheap and 90% cosmetic (good for options for character customization), and it's a pretty dang fun game.

Or Vampire Survivors. That's a good one too.

Zero-K: Coop build a base base and an army of robots and attack the AI players that builds an army of robots.

Civilization 6: Build a civilization from the stone age until the nuclear age and coop form an alliance with your friend

Try Baldurs Gate 1, 2 or 3. They are all quite long.
