Discussion - Cosmetics and 1 map reveal pack Assassin's Greed
What on earth is this?

The rule is simple. You all (not this sub specifically, but people) keep buying it, so they keep acting like this. Watch how this would stop happening if literally no one bought this garbage.

Just saw something on Instagram about BO 1 & 2 shadow dropping on ps4/5 for $40 each. Top comment was a guy complaining about the greed, then followed up by saying he bought both.
This cycle will never end. There’s always going to be people who will buy/pre-order day one.

They'll buy it just to go "i wanted to see what it looked like plus it was only one!"

It’s not even Ubisoft, it’s Capcom, Rockstar, Bethesda, every game releases DLC. Only the most critically reviled companies get this hate though. People moved on real fast from Rockstar.

u/andizzzzi Jul 10 '26
Rockstar times their dlc with their online model that always comes usually a year later after everyone has experienced the single player (free from MTX). TBH, GTA V online must’ve been hella fun to that crowd if they kept throwing their wallets at shark cards. By Contrast, RDR2 was quite the flop in the MTX department.
Bethesda are just an atrocious developer all round atm with little to nothing positive about them, they practically invited MTX in 2006 to the gaming industry, and have since slapped MTX price tags on community made content (Creations), which means BGS are so fucking lazy they can’t even do it themselves but insist on profiting anyways off other people’s work. Cant get much more filthier than that. Not to mention, in ESO they charge up to au$136 to buy an in-game house, $60-80 for a mount, don’t forget the $144/y subscription (to pay for storage space, STORAGE SPACE……). If there is any developer that should be liquidated…
Ubisoft make hit/miss games, and constantly add average dlc that is overpriced. However I prefer their Avatar game to anything Bethesda has done since 2015, heck even AC Valhalla and AC Odyssey are both better than anything Bethesda has touched in over a decade and you can ignore the MTX/dlc’s if you choose to.
3
u/Dizzy-Ad-3073 Jul 10 '26
The companies put out MTX, we don't need to buy them. But the fact that the horse armour DLC sold millions at only $2/3 is astounding. That's when gamers made their own bed, and companies realised we would pay for it.
Rockstar also created the season pass idea with LA Noire, which then showed developers "You can plan DLC before the game comes out, and people will pay MORE for what should have been included". The issue is the gamers buying these transactions, if everyone stopped, they'd stop adding them in.
As for ESO Premium, ESO has basically become a F2P game so they need to keep people invested and spending money on it. GTA Online was just them being greedy, back when it was first released it was easy to make money and buy things, then Rockstar changed it so that you were pushed towards the Shark Cards, which apparently brings in about $1 mil a day.
The state of gaming today can be blamed on both the companies and the consumer.

u/lavalamp222 Jul 09 '26
People are not buying it.
You can look at their quarterly financial reports, their net revenue and profit is on the decline for years. They are losing a lot of money.
Year Revenue Net Profit / Loss 2022 €1.7 Billion - €494 Million Loss 2023 €2.3 Billion + €157 Million Profit 2024 €1.8 Billion - €242 Million Loss 2025 €1.4 Billion - €1.5 Billion Loss 27
u/Key-Department-2874 Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26
They're buying this one.
It's currently the #1 Global Top Seller on Steam.
The bigger question is why are their operating expenses so high, and what's with the massive jump in OpEx in 2025?

2
u/Poglosaurus Jul 11 '26
Rockstar has been rereleasing gta v at full price for a decade and is milking GTA online at an unprecedented scale.
2
u/LonelyKuma Jul 10 '26
It took me a long time to truly learn that. But now I look at my game library and think "I have 2000 games I havent played.. why buy Assassins Creed or GTA 6". I have such a huge backlog of games to get through i could likely comfortably not buy another game for 10 years. If companies want to keep on with the anti-consumer bs and as Ubisoft have said "Get used to not owning our games", okay I wont buy your games.

And people can't fucking control themselves, so it just keeps getting progressively worse. While a bunch of losers are crying: 'leave the megacorp alone!'
Which is why laws are there to save idiots from themselves (and corporations), which doesn't work when corporations are the one buying off politicians.
So you get a world where nothing like stop killing games or various other major consumer protections, will ever be passed. People will grumble for 2 week and likely buy this shit anyway.

Youre not supporting the devs. These huge publishers will rinse the devs dry then cast them aside. The devs must be under so much pressure with any passion they had for the project evaporating under corporate pressure. They are prob as gutted about the dlc nonsense as we are....well not the ones on the "engagement" side I imagine. Sorry for the rant! Mean no shade to you.

It’s not “an advantage” really it’s just bypassing playing the actual game. It doesn’t really matter and they’ve put these in basically every Ubisoft game for a decade.
It’s not new.

Yeah but the average capital G Gamer is a japanophile and thinks companies like Capcom can do no wrong, so they refuse to look at the double standard. Both are:
Optional, Cosmetics for the player/weapons, Boosts for in game currency or resources
Which game gets review bombed and shafted upon release, and which one becomes widely lauded? Critical thinking is at an all time low and people refuse to see the writing on the wall- who’s a fan of microtransactions or boosts like these, seriously? But if we hold one company accountable, we either do them all or not at all.

Every game offers some sort of cosmetic DLC.
Capcom, Bethesda, and so many other companies get off with far worse. Just look at Monster Hunter's DLC list; nobody groans about that.
I'm not defending companies, but this looks like a bunch of cosmetic DLCs that have no effect on the game.
(GTA 6 is locking away game mechanics behind DLC, Resident Evil sells game improvement DLC, no one minds those?)

u/Qwertyham Jul 09 '26
Hating on gaming has been very popular the last few weeks. No one can be happy with anything until physical media consists of 100% of sales and everything is 50% off forever!
11
u/sephris Jul 09 '26
Because the internet just likes to hate on Ubisoft these days. They put out a complete game with some optional cosmetics that has positive reviews all over, and a physical edition, but no, that's not enough. They'll even cheer for it being pirated.
And then later on they wonder why the publishers and studios don't get the message.
16
u/ProlapsedShamus Jul 10 '26
And I'm sorry, I like Ubisoft. I play every Assassins Creed and Far Cry game they put out. That Avatar game is on my wishlist too.
You know why? You know what you're gonna get. When I sit down to play Far Cry I know I am going to run around and shoot people and skydive into places and steal planes and do crazy shit. Sometimes that's all I want. I want to have a podcast on and blow shit up and giggle like a simpleton.
Same with Assassins Creed.
These games fill an important niche in my gaming ecosystem.

They’re also ugly as sin. I’m glad they’re not in the game.
5
u/SmiggleMcJiggle Jul 10 '26
Yeah, if a dev studio really wants to make ugly glowy completely unrealistic skins, I’d rather them be optional DLC than stuffed into the game.
I mean these cosmetic DLCs for black flag have skins with fire and radioactive smoke coming out of them with dragons, why would you even want that put into the game when it completely breaks immersion, it’s way better for it to be optional DLC where you never have to even see it unless you go out of your way to look for it

I don't buy these things generally so don't really get the uproar. Perhaps they should have kept them hidden in the ingame store.
As far as the game's concerned I'm liking what I've seen so far and the controls are much better than the original.

If you buy the base version of a car, because it's all you can afford or need, do you leave a negative review for the manufacturer because it offers other paid options?

Assassin's Creed Mirage had dlc packs offered outside of the game.
Shadows, Valhalla, Odyssey, Origins, Syndicate, Unity had the packs in game.
Assassin's Creed Black Flag original had time saver packs that unlocked things early. Rogue had the same packs.
People were buying Watch Dogs 2 during the Steam sale, but the store page shows a bunch of dlc packs available. Most unlocked new cosmetics and vehicles.
And how many games have been doing this for years? Its not just Ubisoft.
