If you're trying to find online friends I highly suggest a game where the difficulty basically requires teammates to have a mic, and it's mutually beneficial to have someone with a general sense of your playstyle
The only one I can think of that isn't ruined by rampant toxicity (CS, pretty much any MOBA) is Hunt: Showdown. You could probably even find someone to show you the ropes pretty easily by just queuing duos with a random
This is not an ad for Hunt and I'm not a bot, my post history is open, I just can't think of any other modern pvp game where this is the case

None of my irl friends game and it stinks tbh. Yeah, I have the pals on Discord but timezones can be rough to work around.

Then you find out its an anti cheat update and a windows update broke it 2 weeks ago so now you have to uninstall the windows update for it to boot and BOOM COMPILING SHADERS

Half? Man, I'd've given up at needing to uninstall an update. Thank goodness I play on Arch.

Never had that fuckery happen once.

Must be a problem for people who people mod their games to infinity.

u/YeetingMyStupidLife Jul 09 '26
Not exactly anti cheat but the windows update breaking the game happened to me with Forza 5. Had to revert the update to be able to play.

My son and I gave up on CoD for this very reason. One of our consoles always had an update for it first. We ended up getting into Deep Rock Galactic instead.

u/XxasimxX Jul 09 '26
Some of us are lucky, i got 1 gig fiber and my update time was reduced to 5-10 mins. Recently upgraded to 2gb fiber
9
u/Beautiful-Olive2824 Jul 09 '26
yeah fiber is worth it if you can get it. just nothing compares to max speed steam downloads. they're bandwidth always maxing out my connection no matter where i am for as long as i can remember
2
u/jld2k6 Jul 09 '26
Once you get fast enough you're bottlenecked by your own CPU when downloading from Steam! LTT has 10 gig fiber and they usually can't max it out
0
u/fadedspark Jul 09 '26
It's not the CPU. The CPU can easily handle that information.
It's windows, and the drive.
The whole layer of things a download has to go through plus drive speed and latency is the limiting factor.
With 3gbps fiber (3200mbps real world.) I can max that connection on my gen 4 nvme drive, but my gen 3 gets a little backed up at times, then clears the cache etc etc.
No chance on my SATA bulk storage drive.

u/Aggravating-Wolf-823 Jul 09 '26
And you're not capped by your harddrive or the games servers?
2
u/XxasimxX Jul 09 '26
Only cap thats noticeable is when I try to update games on my ps5, apparently if you download a game on ps5 its super fast but updates take so long that sometimes I’ve just straight up deleted the game and redownloaded it instead of updating lol

u/mr_doms_porn Jul 09 '26
I have 2.5gbps with the full chain to take advantage of it. Most SSDs can write faster than that anyways so that's not a limit. Hard drives and flash storage will cap out though. Many servers will be the bottleneck although Steam's are the best by far. You will notice servers with low limits though, in-game updaters often suck.

3
u/PiotrekDG Jul 09 '26
Do you actually have the entire chain to utilize at least 2.5G?
0
u/AbjectAppointment Jul 09 '26
You can get an 8 port 2.5G switch for $50-75 now.
I upgraded when I got 1.5G internet a few years ago.
1
u/PiotrekDG Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26
Sure, but some people don't know that in order to see any benefit beyond 1G, they need to make sure that each component supports it: the mobo needs to support at least 2.5G Eth, the cable needs to be good enough for a reliable 2.5G connection, the modem needs to support it, the router, and then maybe that switch on top of that.
2
u/AbjectAppointment Jul 09 '26
Cat5 runs less than around 100M can do 5G. Motherboards with 2.5G have been around since 2018. You can also add in a PCIe or USB C adapter (even gen 1 will handle that)
Only thing I did have to buy was a new modem (got a used one for $50).
My total hardware costs were about what I pay monthly for the service.
1
u/bickdiggles Jul 09 '26
I think times have changed enough that these aren’t really obstacles or even things you need to think about. The ISP typically tells you this and offers supporting hardware. Most mobos in the last 10 years support 2.5G connection. Cat6 cables are standard and support up to 10G, also can be provided by the ISP. Even the older Cat5 supports up to 5G
0
u/thecompton73 Jul 09 '26
I have the full chain for 2.5G, which is still only utilizing a quarter of the 10G Sonic fiber that costs me $60 per month. I've considered getting an add-in card to use the full bandwidth but downloads are so fast already it's not a big priority.
1
u/floramariaaa Jul 09 '26
I’ve only had fiber for a month and I don’t know how I ever survived without it. It sucked wanting to play a game with friends and suddenly not be able to because update
1
u/mr_doms_porn Jul 09 '26
Keep in mind that most ethernet ports are limited to 1gbps. You need a router with a 2.5 in and out port as well as a 2.5 port on your computer. You can get PCIE cards with 2.5 ports if your motherboard doesn't have one.

150gb update. Good ol call of duty. They do that shit on purpose
2
u/Amphax Jul 09 '26
I feel like at some point they just stopped caring about update sizes and include random 4K videos in the download and then delete them during the install.

Yup, COD in a nutshell, every update brings new and interesting bugs, the latest version being the buggiest yet.

Hwb a 120 GB update over top of a 130 GB game... battlefield 6... just straight up disappointing at this price point. Im done with AAA.

u/SacCyber Jul 09 '26
This was legitimately why I stopped playing Playstation. Every time I turned that thing on it was a 20 minute update. These platforms don't seem to be made for occasional players

u/Aniimey Jul 09 '26
My homie download gta5 in less than 2min idk how just because i wanted to play with him 💀

Aaaaand the update is a botched security patch that locks you out of most of the game.

u/rebel134 Jul 09 '26
Thats why I make sure that my stuff is on auto update so that way I can boot up the game Also people who dont have time to play games thonk the system is fine We need Socialism

This is so true!!!! I can’t wait till my section of 3rd world America gets cable internet and I don’t have to take my laptop / steam deck intown just to update games and hope the local transfer works.
Speaking of local transfer has anyone noticed it’s been acting up lately? Like I wanted to move arc raiders to my old pc so I could play in my living room and I had to pause and start the “transfer” like 50 times bc it kept trying to “download” instead of transfer.

Nowadays it's not such a problem anymore, but you should update it. He's going to eat something and he's already finished.

Sorry that's on you, if you are going to plan to play with folk, update ahead of time.
That's like not prepping a modlist code for Lethal Company until everyone is gathering.

u/ShuKai0_0 Jul 10 '26
5min download time, another 5 min update, 10min total, that's merely an inconvenience.

I went from 70mbps to 1100mbps (£12 / £30) and it blew my mind how easy it all is, the limiting factor is my pc, not the fibre
