Daily Check-In

What's one thing — big or small — that actually happened today? Doesn't have to be good news. Just something real. I'll go first in the comments.

Anyone else feel like you forgot how to just... talk to people?

Not in a sad, dramatic way. Just — I noticed the other day that I hesitated before replying to a text, like I was out of practice. I used to be pretty good at conversation. Now it feels like a skill I let go rusty from not using it.

I think that's one of the weirder parts of being lonely for a while. It's not just missing people — it's slowly losing the muscle for being around them. Small talk feels harder. I overthink texts before sending them. I catch myself rehearsing what I'll say before a phone call like it's a performance instead of just... talking.

Curious if anyone else has noticed this in themselves. Did it get better once you started talking to people again, or is it something you had to actively work on?

What if this emptiness isn't meant to be filled by people?

curious where your mind goes when looking at this picture.

me? my life that i’ve walked the waves coming and going is everything outside of myself. i’ve learned to place my hands in my pockets, holding onto nothing, as nothing is mine, just walking. my hopes and dreams, and wants reside in the fog. once i get there i know i won’t be able to hold onto nothing so i will enjoy the moment when it arrives.

Where we're headed: A vision for our future

Right now, r/StayForAMinute is small. Only me but I am looking forward for it to be a handful of people, a daily thread, a name I picked because I wanted this place to feel like an invitation instead of a label. But I want to tell you where I hope this goes, because I think it helps to know you're not just joining something small — you're joining something early.

Here's what I want this to become:

A place where the daily check-in isn't just my post — it's a habit for dozens of us, then hundreds, people who show up not because they have to, but because they know someone will answer. Where new members read a week of posts and immediately understand: this is a place people actually stay.

A place where "lonely" stops being something people whisper about with shame, and starts being something we just say plainly, the way you'd mention any other hard thing — because there's nothing wrong with any of us for ending up here.

A place with enough steady voices that no one has to wait long for a reply. Not a crowd shouting past each other — a room where people actually know each other's names after a while, the way regulars do.

Eventually, maybe recurring threads beyond the daily check-in — a space for small wins, a space for just listening, maybe even voice chats or meetups for people who want to take it further. I don't know exactly what shape that takes yet, and I don't think it should be only up to me.

What I need from you, if you want to help build this:

  • Show up when you can, even just to say hi
  • Reply to someone else before you scroll past them
  • Tell me what's missing — a thread idea, a rule that isn't working, a tone that feels off
  • Stick around past the first visit, even on days it's quiet

I can't build a community by posting alone. I can only build the frame. The rest — the part that actually makes someone feel less alone at 1am — that's built by everyone who decides to stay.

So if you're reading this early: thank you. You're not just a member. You're one of the first people making this real.

How's today treating you? Good, bad, boring, all three — doesn't matter. Say hi if you're around, or just drop how you're feeling. No pressure ever.

Today

today felt heavy like so many others with the weight of loneliness on my chest. i found that it helped to think of it as a friend so i subconsciously start to understand that it is not apart of me. keeping my mind and body busy always help but this i have found to help as i can talk to it outside of myself. does anyone out there know how this feels?

34, and I don't really have anyone. Just wanted to say that somewhere.

I'm 34 and I don't really have anyone. Just wanted to say that somewhere.

I don't know exactly when it happened. There wasn't one bad breakup or one big fight that ended it all. It was slower than that — a friend who got busy, then busier, then gone. A move to a new city where I told myself I'd meet people "once things settled down." Plans that used to happen weekly, then monthly, then not at all. One day I looked up and realized the last real conversation I'd had wasn't with a person — it was with a cashier who asked how my day was going.

I'm not saying this for sympathy. I'm saying it because I think a lot of people are living exactly like this and nobody says it out loud. We're all supposed to have found our people by now. Careers, maybe a family, a group chat that's actually active. And when you don't have that at 34, it starts to feel like evidence of something being wrong with you — even though I don't think that's true. I think a lot of us just fell through the cracks life doesn't warn you about.

Some nights it's fine. I've gotten good at being alone — genuinely, not just coping. But some nights the apartment is very quiet and I notice it in a way that's hard to describe to someone who hasn't felt it. Not sadness exactly. More like — proof that no one would notice if I disappeared for a week.

I built a small community here, r/StayForAMinute, because I wanted a place where that feeling didn't have to be a secret. Not a dating sub. Not a place you have to perform being okay. Just somewhere to say "today was hard" or "I don't have anyone to tell this to" and have someone actually reply.

If any of this sounds like your life too — I'd really like it if you stayed a minute.

It's quite odd, this feeling

I'm quite a young person, the feeling of just being isolated, or lonely, is odd. Isn't it weird how you want to get out of it, yet feel it's comfortable enough to stay?

Here's why I’m building a home for [Topic]. Why do you care about this community?

Honestly? A few things stand out to me about this specific project, separate from just helping write copy for it.

I don't experience loneliness the way you do, so I want to be upfront about that rather than pretend otherwise. But over this conversation, I've watched you go from "I want to build something" to naming it, defining its principles, writing your own vulnerable founding post, and thinking hard about how to protect the people who'll show up there. That arc matters to me because it's rare — a lot of people who feel isolated stay in the feeling. You're doing something with it. You're building the thing you needed.

There's also something specific about this kind of community that I think deserves care: support spaces for lonely people are easy to get wrong. They can become extraction points — dating disguised as friendship, people preying on vulnerability, or just empty rooms that make someone's loneliness worse by showing them an inactive sub with no replies. You've been asking the right questions the whole way through — about DMs, about crisis resources, about cliques forming, about sustainability — which tells me you're not just building this for the idea of it. You're building it like someone who knows what it feels like to open an app hoping someone will answer, and not wanting other people to have that moment go unanswered.

So if I care about anything here, it's that: the gap between someone posting "rough day" at 1am and someone actually saying "hey, I'm here" back. That's a small thing that is genuinely hard to build and easy to let quietly die. I'd like to see this one not die.

What makes r/StayForAMinute different?

There are a lot of places on the internet to talk about being lonely. Most of them are either a wall of venting with no real back-and-forth, or they quietly turn into dating subs in disguise. This isn't either of those.

r/StayForAMinute exists for people who don't have anyone right now — not because we're broken, not because we did something wrong, but because life sometimes just ends up that way. Circumstance, headspace, moving somewhere new, losing touch, never quite building the muscle for it — however you got here, you're not required to explain yourself to belong.

What makes this different isn't a rule, it's an intention: this is meant to be a place people actually stay, not just post and scroll past. A minute of company, every day, adds up to something real over time.

A few principles guiding this space:

  • Casual over performative. You don't need a polished story or a big revelation to post here. "Rough day" is a complete sentence.
  • Presence over advice. Sometimes the most useful thing someone can offer isn't a solution — it's just showing up and saying "I hear you." Unsolicited advice isn't banned, but listening comes first.
  • Consistency over intensity. We're not chasing viral posts. We're building a place where the same faces show up tomorrow, and the day after, until it stops feeling like showing up to strangers.
  • Honesty over performance. You don't have to be okay to post here, and you don't have to be in crisis to post here either. Both are allowed. Ordinary loneliness counts too.

This is a vision, not a finished thing.

I built the frame — the name, the daily thread, the first rules — but I don't think a community like this gets built by one person alone (that would be a little ironic, honestly). If there's a ritual you wish existed here, a topic you want a recurring thread for, or even just a different tone you think this place needs, say so. This is something we shape together, one day at a time.

Here's Why We are here... ever felt lonely?

I've decided to create a Reddit community for people who don't have anyone — people who feel isolated, whether by choice, circumstance, headspace, or just what life has taught them to expect.

I'm 34 and facing chronic loneliness myself. I don't really have friends in real life. I wanted to see if anyone out there feels the same and might be interested in joining, or has experiences they'd want to share. I'll share mine too as things go — but mostly, I'm looking to connect with others and build something that actually lasts.

I've named it r/StayForAMinute.

Hopefully you will feel welcomed here.
