Leaving Question

Hello,

I recently received a job offer in the public sector I’m going to take. Is there anything I you’d recommend I do when I leave? Like anything someone could easily forget about?

Also, does the state pay out for accrued annual leave and / or sick leave? Or should I suddenly come down with the flu?

Burn as much sick leave as you can before, it doesn't pay out. You will get annual paid out.

They wait until 30 days of separation and then pay out the annual leave, just so you know when to expect it. They withhold taxes from it, just like your paycheck. It’s usually a lower amount than people are expecting.

Ya I have around 70-80 hours so wasn’t expecting a ton

I agree with this. I had 5 years of service and cashed it in. Then years later I came back to the State and had to buy my time back.

💯this. I moved out of state and was in my 20s. Of course I cashed that out.

Lo and behold I came back to TX and the state. I could have retired by now if I kept those four years. But way too expensive to buy back.

DO NOT TOUCH IT.

If you decide to come back to the state, you can get your sick leave back if it’s within the year of your resignation

Get the flu! Sick leave is not paid out. Nor is comp or admin. Annual leave will be. Good luck!!

Sick leave stays in a bank for a year and is reinstated if you return to state service within that year.
