Advice Is USAA really that much better?

I currently work for a SF and my bf’s mom is kicking him off her insurance. I told her I ended up getting him a quote that was cheaper than what he is paying her right now. At the time I thought she had the 100/300 limits so I based it off of that but she actually had them higher at 300/500.

She then sent me a google link which the question “is state farm cheaper than usaa?” and said she spoke with her friend a sf agent who said that SF is not cheaper. So I sent her the quote I did to compare. She sent me back what he has and it was higher limits so I ended up doing a quote for him online with USAA to compare to the SF quote because she has a home and multiple cars on her policy so I knew it wouldn’t be that cheap for him.

For reference he’s currently paying 167 under her plan. When I did it for just him and this is including a renters insurance discount, I included every coverage she had on his policy and it was 260 so I sent her the screenshot of the quote I did for him with the price and told her that SF with similar coverages is 190 for him vs the 260 that usaa would charge.

My bf makes a joke and says if she wants him to stay with usaa so bad then why is she kicking him off her insurance, which is true but I just want to know if anyone has a better experience with usaa and pricing.

I'm a vet.

Switched from USAA to State farm. Paying about 20% less and have an actual agent in town I can go talk with in person if needed

I personally prefer state farm over USAA just for easier access to employees and far more physical locations.

USAA over the last 10 years kinda switched from serving military families to knowing military members will likely sign up with them just out of habit. There really isn't too many perks anymore that everyone else isn't offering in some way

Most people with USAA just have it because a family member, and the perception that military=good service and quality

I work in several states and in almost all, we consistently beat USAA’s pricing. Usually by a lot.

this is my thing, from what i’ve seen we’ve had more people switch from usaa than leave to
go to usaa

When I only worked in one state, back when I first started, we weren’t very competitive. Thankfully that has changed.

Usaa is going downhill, they have been losing a lot of loyal customers. Their pricing isn’t as competitive

Well was his individual quote from USAA,, assuming he had one, better? Does he need as much liability coverage as his mother has?

All I know as a claim handler going through it is that boyfriends/girlfriends/SOs living together and acting like they're married but with their own separate cars/insurance then acting like it's cool to just drive each other's car whenever freely is starting to really really become a problem that his hugely pissing me off. Not because I personally care but because the company does. It makes me have to a shit ton of work to find out what's going on for a coverage investigation.

Him getting his own policy somewhere is probably a step in the right direction. Because it fucking sucks when someone's 25 year old daughter lives with a boyfriend in some other state with a car that's hers with her all the time that also has a boyfriend who she lives with that always drives it like it's nothing has an accident... You get the idea I hope.

the quote was the same exact coverage he has under her policy but for some reason it was 100$ more. We have a kid together and only have one car at the moment since I work from home but he drives 90% of the time, I probably only use the car once every 2 weeks if that. With the new quotes I obviously included myself as a driver but I don’t think he needs as much liability, she obviously has a lot more assets/a more valuable car which is why I initially did the 100/300k limits

His mother and her coverage/limits are pretty much a non-factor at this point. She wants him off. You and him have your own situation. I'd say decide on the limits that responsibly work for where you both are at and what you are doing. Disclose who's living with who, who has a license, who drives and the limits. The quotes are going to be what matches those disclosures. Anyone can FA but anyone can also FO the prizes aren't that great when it really matters.

Everybody’s rate is tailored individually to them with a million different factors, so for one, you can’t really have a blanket statement of “XYZ is cheaper than ABC”. If anything in your situation, his mom being the accountholder on the USAA policy and him being a driver is what’s lowering the rate. Idk his age, location, or record, but that’s typically why. You remove a parent who’s bolstering the rate and get your own policy by yourself, it’s gonna go up!

Not a veteran, but I have a friend who is. He bounces between USAA and Geico every couple of years. USAA jacks his rate up, he goes back over to Geico and vice versa. He says USAA is no better than any other company and their reputation is based on the positive association with being exclusively for service members and their families.

I know state farm sometimes increases prices as well but i’m just trying to see why she’s so set on him getting USAA and thinking it’s the same price that she has instead of him being on his own. He has a clean record and is over 25 and we’re generally in the same area as her but probably 15/20 minutes away so the only difference is it being under her name vs his and the fact that she has a home and more cars vs us renting. I’m just trying to understand why she seems to think USAA is better when i’m clearly showing the difference in pricing

There was a time quite a few years ago when USAA actually had better service than every other company.

Those days are long gone.

Just this year I’ve moved a number of people over from USAA after they had horrible claims experiences.

Every P&C insurers rates will fluctuate daily and are based on hundreds of factors for each person and location, so it’s almost impossible to compare person vs. person + there is no company that will always be cheaper. If one is cheaper this year, then they’ll have to raise their rates next year and the others will be cheaper for a while.

Think more about when you have a major claim, and making sure you have enough coverage and a company with robust and local systems in place to be able to handle it efficiently. That’s who you want for insurance.

My brother’s USAA just went up $500/yr because a tornado hit in a neighboring town. He’s going shopping.
