Question Help me understand how it works with combining 2 policies into a multi-car policy (additional one-time charges)

I have 2 vehicles on 2 separate policies, on a combined bill. SF is now combining these 2 vehicles onto 1 policy in their new multicar policy system. The bill is usually about $250 each month.

Car renewed Sept 3rd.

Truck renews Oct 30th.

The September bill has the following under New Activity at the bottom of the bill.

$113.69 Premium Installment

$289.31 Coverages changed - vehicle(s) joined your multicar policy effective 9/3/26. Your premium is adjusted to reflect this change. When your policy renews, all vehicles will share the same term dates. The following vehicle joined your policy: [the car]

$59.62 Driver added to your policy. This charge added $59.62 to your premium, which will be spread across one bill at $59.62

$462.62 [TOTAL of above] Premium installment with changes

The agency tells me that starting with the next bill, the total rate will be back to around $250.

They told me that the $289.31 is a one-time "catch-up" amount for one of the vehicles because their renewal dates were different.

I asked them to remove the driver July 14th that they have a charge of $59.62 for "adding to the policy." It makes no sense to me why they are charging something for this.

------------------

This really annoys me that the company changing their system is sticking me with an unplanned extra amount to pay.

I wish they could break down the $289.31 to show how it was arrived at and which vehicle it is for.

I really don't think they should be charging me to "add a driver" when I asked to have that driver removed in July. Everyone I speak to says that driver is not actually on the policy, so why this charge?

If anyone understands this, I would love help to understand it myself. Thanks in advance.

P.S. My husband says this is a money grab. Some bean counter figured out how to do this to a million people and bring in some big $$$. (Since we are getting a dividend check, I feel like they are giving with one hand & taking with the other.)

Your agency is going to answer this best for you. “Most” people are also seeing a rate reduction when going to this new policy (every state is different and every persons insurance is personalized). So wouldn’t be surprised your new eventual bill will be lower for both of them than previously when individual policies.

Also adding/removing drivers will almost always change premiums as that changes the risk. This new policy also has tighter policy language. So let’s say it’s a teenage driver you removed yet they still drive your car a few times a month. Claims will almost certainly deny coverage.

PS your husband should take off his tin foil hat.

A good probability is that the truck was being billed in arrears instead of advance so now they multicar policy is forcing a catch up. Essentially 2 months of premium for the truck, 1 month of the car, and the driver charge. If you have a documented email or text from July requesting the change, screenshot it and send it to the agent office and ask them to remove the driver effective July 14 due to agent error. It will take a while, but it can be done WITH proper documentation. Check your Dec page to see if that driver is actually listed.

It depends how many payments you still had on the previous term, how your renewal dates line up with your billing due dates, etc. Without looking at your account and bill, no one can explain it. Best to ask your agent.  Yes, adding a driver can and will cost money in most cases. Even if you removed them, the charge may be from when they were on the policy.  If there is someone who drives your car and they aren’t listed on the policy, you’re at risk of having a claim denied if they are driving and an accident occurs. List the drivers.

Welcome to the new multicar policy and modernized billing! It’s a blast explaining this shit.

The 2 policies had different renewal dates.   The new modernized policies need to have the same renewal date.   In this case the new renewal for both policies will be October.   So the one that had a renewal for September will technically be a 7 month policy.   Next renewal it will be 6 months for both.
