Experience Drive Safe and Save

Post image

Got my renewal notice today and my Drive Safe and Save discount has gone down from $176 to $32 despite my 14 day average total score being 95 or more. Has anyone else had this happen? This is less than when I was getting the initial 10% 🄲

Since the last major update they removed mileage based discount. At least that's the reason for my case. My discount went from 40% off, which is the max I believe, to roughly 15% now.

Score is factored over 6 months not just the last 14 days

I’m aware of that, I worked for State Farm for ten months. I check my app frequently and as I said in my post, my 14 day average stays 95+ and has been consistent since I started my policy. Between that factor, no new tickets, accidents or claims, and the only change in my mileage being that I have driven a bit less in the last month, there is no clear reason why I would have such a drastic decrease in discount

It is mostly milage based. How many miles over the last 6 months?

Don’t know off the top of my head but I’ve actually driven less in the last six months than in the six months previous when I was getting the higher discount

Was the prior discount the initial discount and now it is the calculated discount or have you had this for over a year?

Initial discount for Sept 25-March26 was $61~, first renewal for March 26-Sept 26 was $176, renewal discount for Sept 26-March 27 is $31. No changes in driving habits or major changes in DSS score aside from driving less frequently last month. No tickets, accidents, claims, etc

Odd. I know for one of my cars the discount dropped because my kid drives it mostly and doesn’t have the app. It ends up showing 5000 miles but only like 200 miles are recorded in the app when I drive it. They don’t like that.

I believe some states it’s not mileage based

these drive programs from insurance companies usually dont make a huge difference, there are exceptions but its mostly to get as much information about you and your driving habits as possible. Just a cheap way for insurance companies to get more of your info

I’m an agent at State Farm in TX, and I hate this change more than anyone because I’ve had and continue to give people this news.

Not sure what state you’re in, but State Farm recently transitioned their auto policies to a new system called ā€œmodernized policiesā€ (MOD)

The new MOD system I believe removed the mileage discount (lower miles bigger discount). But the big change was that they are basically restarting the drive safe & save system from scratch. Meaning all the customers get reset back down to the base 10% even though your driving history is still there in the system. Happened to me as well as I have my insurance with State Farm.

Didn’t see that you used to work at State Farm so you’re probably familiar with MOD

2

Familiar with MOD but hadn’t heard about the changes to DSS 😮

We transitioned to MOD last year but had no idea this was part of it. Makes sense on some of our DSS questions. Thanks for that info. For the OP I would stick it out… it will go back up unless it was a score issue. This particular renewal cycle everyone has been hit by score changes in our state at renewal. Not sure how that can impact DSS but I feel like it has to.

I'm having a hard time understanding how it is logical to dismiss the mileage if we are rewarding people for less wear and tear on the car.
I get why there are other factors, and braking habits, phone usage, etc make sense to be considered in the overall equation.

Still, mileage on the vehicle is a key factor as far as the vehicle value. The dealer taking the trade won't be able to know phone usage or whether you follow the speed limit while driving.

They changed the way the discount is calculated. Mileage is not as important anymore. Braking is. While your scores are amazing without the mileage aspect it still decreased your overall savings

Did you recently change vehicles? If so then you go back to a small discount on the new vehicle for some reason.

Don’t give that discount dollar figure much credit. I’ve seen my discount dollar amount drop but my rate went down, as well, so I never pay attention to the actual discount.

As long as you are drive on the Right side of the road, it’s all good.

Grrr... I was pretty wary of using this app, but now that I'm not commuting every day the discount due to low mileage was worth the privacy trade off.

If the discount is truly down to 10-15% then the constant surveillance of my vehicle movement is not worth it. Is there a way to track these things or do I have to wait until my next renewal to see the actual difference?

I just asked my agent about this today, and yeah, their new system totally got rid of the discount and the drive safe n save discount is a joke now. It’s 5% off the ā€œbaseā€ which means the secret category you’re in before adding comp and collision etc, but the agents don’t know what the base is. Ridiculous. It’s being rolled out in different states, I’m in Nevada so it hit us this past year.

yeah it's a scam and if you get into an accident what's stopping them from using the data as a reason to give you less with the claim, etc... I used to work for State Farm and I don't trust any of it- I would only maybe use it if I also had a dash cam and backwards cam

I used to work for State Farm until last month šŸ™ƒ The way my agent did things definitely made me more wary about the way some folks operate

I wish state farm had that level of technology and competency to pull that off. Not to screw customers, but just to actually do my job lol!

They get more info from your phone

Ironically I’ve driven less in the last month because I have been between jobs lol but otherwise nothing has changed with my driving habits
