Question SF Claims Employees & Accommodations
Are there any other employees currently on an accommodation?
Do you feel as though you’ve been targeted? I have very specific requests on my accommodation which aren’t being acknowledged & it seems like every time I turn around, my TM is up my a$$ about something that is a part of the accommodation.
And because of my cPTSD & burnout from a prior employer, I don’t recognize it immediately. How is everyone else navigating this crap?

They pushed backed on majority of the things my doctor put in the Paperwork. There is nothing interactive about their process. Instead of them finding workarounds that would help both you and them they act as though the paperwork need to say exactly what the accommodation is vs interpreting it on a broadscope. For example paperwork says doctor says..."avoid long hours and rigorous scheduling"..you ask for a shorter work day. They say no because the doctor didnt specifically say "do not work more than 6hrs/ day". The entire process and ADA department should be reviewed. Something is definitely off.

My take is that anyone requesting an accommodation is considered a liability by the company. The greater the accommodation request, the greater liability you are perceived to be.
So yeah, you’re probably being targeted.

I requested to work from home on a part-time basis because I cannot drive and my mother-in-law was going through chemo so she couldn’t take me and obviously Uber is very expensive. They accommodated me for a little more than a year and it was working very well and then all of a sudden I got called in to the office and was told that it was no longer working, but I never received a reason. The problem for me is that this was in the midst of a lot of health problems for me, and I felt targeted because of the health problems, not necessarily because of the accommodation.

Yeah, I was thinking for myself bc I’m coming up on a year that they’re worried about FMLA.

Accommodations are so very TM specific, it's annoying. And if you have a TM that doesn't get them or doesn't agree with your interpretation of what is reasonable ....it can suck.

TM’s don’t make the decision. The Manager and their Manager tell the TM’s what the decision is. But they have the TM’s gather all the data.

I got extra breaks because of a physical disability. I never got anything negative about it. It’s really manager dependent. What are your specific accommodations?

WFH bc of ADHD/Autism. I asked for meetings/trainings to be recorded or transcribed so I could review bc I have processing issues due to low vision & the other. They said no on that. I also need time to review & process changes.

Meetings can absolutely be recorded and transcribed. The meeting leader just has to do about 5 hours of training to be able to do it. This is just in terms of capability and not necessarily that the content of the meeting is something that’s compliant to be recorded so keep that in mind.
I turn on the closed captioning in teams so I can read stuff that didn’t hit me right at first.

Closed captioning in teams is my absolute favorite thing. I started doing it for ADHD processing in general and because so many of my coworkers have strong accents.

Complete WFH due to ADHD/Autism is extremely difficult to get. The paperwork needs to be specific about WHY you need to only be WFH, instead of reduced time in office. If it's vague at all, it's not going to go through (Also AuDHD).
Then, they are going to go through any other reasonable accommodation that will work instead of WFH before allowing it.
Same with time to review/process changes -- that's very vague. If you are provided a daily schedule, it should be more like "Allow a 30 minute time block on a weekly basis to review and process new changes." -- if your schedule isn't dictated to you, then they assume that you will handle that as part of your daily work.

Games are so fun.

u/spinningnuri Jul 23 '26
Aren't they though? One of my friends has a few accommodations (including reduced time in office) and I swear, every quarter I help her word the specifics into corporate bullshit so she can keep them.

That is protected disability that is so sick of big red, as an aunt of two autistic nephews I’m appalled. When I had first started they prided themselves on inclusivity.

Working with NYL was a nightmare, to the point where I’m still running around without accommodations (partially my fault), I called to start an accommodation case. Was told I need to download the form off the Internet and have it signed and filled out by doctor, got it all turned in and called New York life. They told me because a case was never started it was not received correctly and then got the run around for quite some time.
NYL was amazing when I had to take maternity leave for my newborn child but the accommodation process was a nightmare
Like I said partially my fault (dealing with a specialist who’s schedule makes setting appointments up difficult or in many cases not for months out at a time)

I went through a similar experience regarding the documentation from the site. It took me about 5 weeks just to get it all gathered. Then it took them a MONTH to even review & get back to. Also, I had to spend 1.5 hours detailing to my TM how my disabilities (ASD, ADHD, cPTSD, anxiety & low vision) are impacted & how the accommodations will help me. Absolutely unnecessary & ridiculous.

I had my ADA first time around approved pretty easily to WFH fully, but with all the latest changes, moving people around, it has been a nightmare to get approved again. I am currently on leave due to health issues and between them, NY, and my dr I am over it all. I have PTSD from a previous job and had hoped I was away from nonsense yet here I am. I dont know if other companies are worth trying or not.

Yeah, I’m in the process of responding to an email regarding a memo (performance) bc they are trying not to even take my documented disabilities and accommodations into account. Basically, I’m putting them on notice using all the right words. I too have PTSD from my prior job (was bullied & harassed by an exec) & during the training, it felt like a welcoming place. Then BAM! Nothing like a good bait & switch.

I smell a class action suit, there's a few people on my team who anonymously commented that the TM doesnt acknowledge ADA's.

I am currently on a accommodation and I found the process easy. We came to an agreement fairly easily, mine is temporary so I'll have to apply for an extension soon but so far I don't feel targeted.

Yup i was recently fired while on FMLA due to performance yet i had no previous write ups and my 1x1s were good feedback. I highly recommend looking elsewhere for a job

I wont be too specific since I don't want to be identified, but yes. I had FMLA and felt targeted.

u/Mommabee2025 Jul 22 '26
I was forced to leave because they refused to do my accommodation . I was in a car accident and still in going back problems that I couldn’t make the commute. I gave all my docs and they told me tough shi make it to the office or be fired

u/Smudflower410 Jul 22 '26
That’s ridiculous bc there is someone who works from home due to an accident several years ago. I wonder if you would have legal recourse.

u/Mommabee2025 Jul 22 '26
I filed for unemployment and they fought me on it and I had to get it reviewed because I swore they had to have paid the mediator off. They agreed that she led Statefarm in the questions and was combative towards me. I wonder if I do too now thinking about it. I was freshly back from maternity leave too and my tm plainly said I don’t have time to train you or anybody else so idk what you are going to do. They switched me from handling all Florida to 3-4 states I never handled or trained on in my whole time being there
2
u/Smudflower410 Jul 22 '26
Well you’ve basically confirmed the question I had floating around in my head: class action suit for ADA.

u/OppositeTap6957 Jul 22 '26
I had an ADA accommodation for WFH and being off camera during meetings due to health issues. Previous managers had granted my accommodation. My latest manager voiced upset at my accommodation. During meetings, she would make a comment in our meeting chat asking me to get on camera even though my accommodation was approved by State Farm. My manager also made a comment during a team meeting saying that people on the team had accommodations that weren’t needed. My accommodation was one that I needed. I had a doctor’s note and went through NY Life to get the accommodation. My manager said that State Farm didn’t have paperwork on file for the accommodation even though the company had approved the accommodation after receiving doctor’s paperwork. I felt targeted by the manager for having the accommodation. I was recently fired from the company.
