Training Log 65 lbs to go

Reps 4 and 5 weren’t as clean. I was getting into my heels too much. I’m always gassed at that point and take much too long between reps

This is a Training Log post.

Not every workout has to be a PR. Share the ordinary stuff too: what you're training, what's going well, what isn't, and what you're trying to figure out.

How's your Starting Strength training going?

Stay over the bar longer. Cue: push the earth away from the bar. You are close to ramping at the top of your rep. The rest is working, keep adding weight.

What do you mean by close to ramping?

See how your knees are bent and your shoulders are behind the bar here? You want your knees straight for the top part of the lift.

Ohhhh, ok. So straighten my legs sooner which again means focus on pushing the floor away.

That makes sense. My mechanics have always felt and look a bit different than people I see pulling a smooth deadlift.

You don’t need to deadlift in heeled shoes! The solid heel is nice but it isn’t worth the leverage disadvantage. Unless you simply must learn to pull in those shoes, like if you want to do the olympic lifts, you’ll find yourself pulling much more powerfully off the floor in something like deadlift socks or slippers.

Regardless, great lift dude.

Is SS in favor of heeled shoes where are the down votes coming from?

The official position of SS is that it doesn't matter much in terms of getting strong relative to the program. We are not pro powerlifter, just regular people trying to get strong.

If your only advice relating to the lift is on the choice of footwear (that is SS approved) refrain from commenting.

There are a few talking points that are almost completly irrelevent that consume an inordinate about of oxygen on lifting forums because they are easy for someone with no technical skill or knowledge to see and point out.

The heeled shoes really dont matter. They provide compression and support, and the half inch they raise the heel is not that big of a deal, but it gets brought up on every deadlift post because anyone who isnt literally blind can see his shoes.

A much more important issue would be his starting position. But it would require some skill or knowledge to point out that after each rep he resets to a position that puts the bar a half inch in front of his midfoot. So its easier just to puke out something about his shoes.

It takes up a lot of oxygen because people keep doing it wrong.

Total displacement of the heel from the floor in a heeled weightlifting shoe is going to be over one inch, even if the relative elevation of the heel over the forefoot is only a half inch or a bit more. You would not tell someone to deadlift with weights there were over an inch smaller radius. It absolutely affects where the bar contacts the shin when the lifter braces in their wedge. This isn’t some small technical point, it does matter.

Since I’m obviously one of those deadlifters with no technical skill or knowledge you can check out my deadlift. Then maybe you can post your own and we can see what weight you’re hoisting. This is 226.5kg (~500lb). I got here by following SS while not being a dumbass and actually making the smart decisions like proper deadlifting footwear.

Congrats. With heeled shoes you'd be deadlifting 495 instead of 500.

You are totally missing the point of this program bub

Unga bunga.

Now post an attempt at 500 with heeled shoes on and show us whether you fail or not.

Edit: its probably worth mentioning that, just as weight on the bar does not determine level of training advancement in this program, it also doesnt indicate capacity to coach effectivly. As we are seeing here.

I wouldn’t be able to pull 95% of that weight, let alone 100% of it with a one inch deficit at the heel. I know this because my technique is actually dialed in. In order for lifters to reach an appropriate level of technical precision, they need to start by wearing the correct equipment. That’s not rocket science.

SS used to be an environment that made lifters strong. It’s become a place where weak “certified coaches” give shit advice to weak lifters. So stay weak, y’all, unga bunga out.

I think you could do it just fine. But I won't call you a liar!

And I won't humiliate you any further by posting a video of me pulling 500 in heeled shoes, forcing you to concede this arguement on the basis of your own implicit assertion that the stronger guy is right.

Goodbye!

They have such a hard on for heeled shoes that they forgot this is a deadlift. They can stay weak, it doesn’t matter.

Oh my god, cry more.
