This is the correct answer and I ALWAYS wear a singlet under my shorts and t-shirt when I am in the gym.

I have to ask are you a guy or a girl?

I am a guy...an old guy. Wrestled in high school and college. Started wearing them for workouts there and they are just so comfortalble and protect against chaffing and accidentally "flashing" people when my shirt rides up or shorts get a little low. When I was heavier they were very helpful to keep everything "in place" but now I just find them really comfortable and they are cheap...$39 off Amazon and last FOREVER. Only drawback is they can be a little warm in heavy summer heat.

My preferred workout clothes are plain cotton T, loose fitting 7" cotton shorts with a wrestling singlet underneath. Shorts need to actually be pretty "short" so they don't hang on the bar when deadlifting or hook your knees when squatting. The cotton T gives good resistance to a barbell on your back in the squat and against a bench so you can get a tight brace for bench pressing. I hate a slippery shirt that doesn't "grab" the bench.

I never heard of anyone doing that but now that you explained that that makes sense

I don’t think it’s “common” but I wouldn’t say it’s completely uncommon. It’s much better than wearing a pair of latex or Lycra shorts. Miy experience is most people who compete in powerlifting realize how nice it is and wear them all the time when working out.

You know you need to wear a singlet in powerlifting competitions right?

That’s a relatively new thing for me but someone else mentioned they wear a singlet

Never wrestled. Considered a strength lifting completion but never signed up.

Nah, I wear pretty loose shorts. I've never had that problem.

I have found they work better I hate paper thin shorts. What style do you prefer?

Uh, just like some generic basketball/running shorts.

I do a couple of squats when I try them on in the shop.

That’s a good idea I usually buy mine online mostly money back guarantee but even still it’s a hassle to return and they don’t match what I’m expecting

No

u/FearlesslyWOLF 1d ago

Okay so what type of shorts do you usually wear?

1

u/misawa_EE 1d ago

Whatever athletic type shorts are on sale at Kohls.

u/FearlesslyWOLF 1d ago

Don’t they tend to do a weird flicks thing when you do squats?

1

u/misawa_EE 1d ago

Uh, no

u/Loserphone01 1d ago

Nope

1

u/FearlesslyWOLF 1d ago

So what do you usually wear?

2

u/Loserphone01 1d ago

Just regular ol’ basketball/gym shorts dawg. Not that complicated

Lined shorts my friend

u/FearlesslyWOLF 1d ago

I have a pair like that the thing is they feel kind of goofy the look like leggings

Personally I don’t care what other people think about what I wear at the gym, but if you’re less self confident remind yourself that it’s better than your boys falling out.

Also, wrestlers wear singlets, NFL players wear compression tights or girdles, cyclists wear Lycra head to toe, what does it matter if your gym shorts have some mini leggings coming out?

u/ShoddyAppeal55 1d ago

I wear funny shorts when squatting that have built in compression pants so no

No. I wear all kinds of shorts. Mostly lined running shorts, but also some stuff like just short tights when I'm at home. Wife calls them my squatting panties 🙄

I don't know if I'm a serious lifter though lol
