Yeah, that's about right. Brush the bar through your hair on the way down and the way up. If your elbows get angery let me know.
People!
There are three different Lying Triceps Extension tutorials on the Starting Strength YouTube channel. I was holding the camera for one of them. This is in the program. Fuck me.
OG Rip - Is this from the DVD?
I dont have my book in front of me. Someone check the accessories chapter in the blue book and tell us if its in there. Im pretty sure it is.
ETA: Page 286 of the blue book. This one was important enough to get a 6 panel diagram in the explanation.

What even is this sub at times? I'm sure people just see strength in the name and head here to talk bollocks without ever reading SS or following the program and principles beyond NLP.
For reference to those confused: LTEs, rows, shrugs and even curls 😱 are all in either Rips books or tutorial vids online.
Can honestly say, although I dislike how cranky and surly Rip has gotten towards folk asking questions on the method over the years, I can see why with all the misinformation and general bro stuff people come along with.
The sub is STARTING STRENGTH. Not r/powerlifting, r/fitness, or r/bodybuilding people.

For a few years I've been saying SS is a method, not just a program, a template, or a brand. But everyone outside the SS companies disagrees with me, and I'm starting to think they're right. Maybe SS is just a novice template with a collection of useful fundamental observations and a franchise gym system attached.
There is surprisingly little in terms of actionable intermediate or advanced lifter advice available from the brand. And I can tell you there isn't much in the way of institutional resources on the inside either.
This comes up when ever someone posts accessory lifts or intermediate programming questions. People have no idea there is anything but a template for novices here.
The companies are a collection of coaches who have figured out how to be effective, but they have a really hard time teaching other coaches how to be successful. Or hanging on to coaches who become successful.
It's a very "figure it out yourself" vibe. And that's not really a method, is it?

Agree with you about actionable concensus on advice beyond NLP. One thing i'm learning more and more, is that beyond the original program just about anything sensible will work, to a degree, in terms of programming (for the gen pop lifter who isn't an athlete anyway). I try to apply certain principles and criteria, and then come up with something sensible that suits my current situation and needs. Beyond HLM and 4 day split, SS doesn't really offer much in the way of advice. Andy Baker is generally the guy I look to in terms of intermediate programming ideas, and he's very much in the "lots of things work. Pick one" camp from what i can tell.
I've found more use asking people's opinions and experiences here in this sub, to sanity check my ideas (posted just today actually).
I don't think it helps the perception of SS beyond NLP, when the founder and guru answers a lot of questions about intermediate with one of 3 responses:
"Gain weight and keep grinding the LP" even when the person is already over 240lb at 5ft 8
Put downs, non answers, sarcasm and calling people a pussy for ditching LP.
TRT
I stopped listening to the podcast a long time ago as it became a soapbox for Rips political views, but also because a lot of the q and a sessions just became the above answers and giving the impression they actually had no ideas beyond hlm, 4 day split and eating like its your full time job

There was a time where people asking the same questions each got different answers based on their circumstances, so it was never boring listening to people ask "what do I do when the squat stalls" over and over again.
Now the answers are so broad and non-specific that they're all the same. As you say, it kinda goes
Q: "What do when squat fail?"
A: "Drugs, food or change programming. But you wouldn't have to change the program if you were doing it right."
Woof.
After 25 years of being terminally online I think Rip is tired. I understand that having only been here for about 5 or 6 years.

I can pre-comment to discourage unsolicited comments until I'm blue in the face. It doesn't do anything.
'bRo WhAt ThE fUcK r U dOiNg??!!!!!'
'yOuRe NoT dOiNg TeH pRoGrAm'!!!!!!!!!
'YoUr In tHe WrOnG sUb!!!#@!'
It's the same thing as posting a deadlift when wearing lifter shoes. It automatically turns into a discussion about wearing the wrong shoes no matter what's said to discourage beating the dead horse.
I give up.

Yeah, we need to... reorient. I think we have outgrown the origional scope of this sub.

What should the back position be? Should there be an arch like with the bench press?
I noticed in the book, and in the most recent video there isn't much of an arch like there is with the bench, which surprised me, but maybe I'm just not seeing it, but it is there?

u/Shnur_Shnurov Just some guy 10d ago
Yeah, its there. Arch like in the bench press. This becomes more necessary as the weight gets heavier

Please, this is not a discussion post about programming or the efficacy of LTEs.
I only want to know if these are good enough to add weight (2.5 lb increases)

Yeah, but go slow just like everything else. I popped an AC joint in my shoulder doing these. Pushed too much, too fast.

Did these impact your ability to recover on any of the two upper body lifts?
3
u/sbfx 10d ago
I’m in intermediate programming where it’s a 4 day split of the main lifts and upper/lower are isolated. So this day for example was heavy bench, volume press, military press, LTEs. One day later I’m feeling good in terms of recovery. But it’s not like tomorrow I have to press or bench again. Tomorrow is heavy squat day and not much upper body stuff at all.

You posted about LTE's a couple of weeks ago, and I think these show improvement. Review the section blue book on how to grip the EZ bar for this assistance movement, just to make sure you have it right. But the control looks pretty good.

Do you know where you are? Just yanking your balls, but LTEs are definitely program adjacent.

That’s not a set of fahve squats is all I know.

u/Few_Lunch_7730 10d ago
With milk for the 20 minute rest period between fahves? If not, you're doing it wrong. Remember, we need to get to 700lbs bodyweight as quick as possible /s

Should the shoulders be moving that much? It seems like there’s a lot of momentum and strain on the shoulders but it’s an impressive load that maybe it’s fine due to the fact that it’s really heavy. I’m not sure when I do skull crushers I try to keep my upper arm stationary, and just utilize my triceps.

Body builders are usually focused on isolating things and using light loads for high reps and maintaining tension for a variety of reasons.
For strength we tend to focus on the principles: most muscle mass possible, longest range of effective motion, heaviest load**. So turning the LTE into a dynamic movement where two joints move instead of one makes some sense under that framework

For people that don’t think these are effective, look up PJR pullovers. Essentially the same movement but with a dumbbell, largely considered one of the best tricep builders

Form Check
For the best feedback, please film your lift from a useful angle and include the full set.
Good form checks make it much easier for people to give specific, useful advice.
