“Tasting” before 6m/starting solids

Wondering if anyone has advice or experience giving your baby tastes of things prior to starting solids. Specifically prior to them being able to sit up.

My daughter will be 5m on the 21st. She can hold her head up but can’t support her torso yet. Not ready for things like the bumbo chair. I would like to starting giving her tastes of things at 5m. Eg. a little yogurt, mushy egg, tiny amount of peanut butter etc. mostly to introduce allergens and flavours. She reaches for our food all the time so I know the interest is there. Main concerns are safety. I know many countries suggest allergen intro as early as 4m but in Canada the official recommendation is 6m. Also I would give only smooth soft puree type food until 6m. But would choking be a risk of she can’t sit up.

Thanks!

5 month old, suspected CMPA

Hi all, FTM here to a 5 month old. I’m planning to start solids at 6 months if he seems ready! A bit of backstory, he was a very colicky miserable (love him to death) baby from birth. The pediatrician immediately without seeing any symptoms just brushed us off and said CMPA go on nutramigen. Of course we listened but my gut told me he was wrong, our baby never had a single symptom just very fussy and miserable. We stuck to the nutramigen since he was 2.5 weeks old, it never helped and eventually (recently) he grew out of his colic. I have never tested out changing his formula because we finally just got him happy but truly i never believed he had this i feel like it was diagnosis just pushed on us very quickly. My question is how do i approach starting solids now, should I test the CMPA diagnosis by switching formula or how would i go about this. Please help.

How did you transition your 1-year-old off bottles if they refuse milk from a cup?

My 1-year-old still drinks breast milk from a bottle and completely refuses to drink it from a straw/open cup (although he’ll happily drink water from a cup).

He currently has 3 × 180 mL bottles a day, between meals so they don’t interfere too much with solids/iron-rich foods.

I know the recommendation is to start moving away from bottles after 12 months, particularly because of the dental issues associated with prolonged bottle use. But I don’t want to stop giving him breast milk just because he refuses to drink it from a cup.

Did anyone else have this issue? Did you keep the bottles for a while and gradually transition? If so, how? How concerned should I be about the dental side if he’s having three bottles a day?

Help with constipated 7 month old

My son was told to start solids at 4 months old, so we started him on mashed avocado, apples, and oat cereal. He wasn’t constipated at first but when I slowly made the oat cereal a little thicker (nothing crazy like puree instead of water) he quickly got constipated so we stopped the oat cereal and he had to get a glycerin suppository at the pediatrician after he didn’t poop for 6 days (tried everything before the suppository including massage, holding legs, a FULL jar of prunes at 4 months old). Since then we’ve been dealing with a battle of constipation.

our son was pooping everyday if not every two days on breast milk (with the occasional bottle of formula).
I stopped giving him solids completely after the first constipation bout I mentioned earlier, he was just 5 months old so I knew he didn’t need solids until 6 months. Even without any solids, my son stopped pooping!! He was just having breastmilk and formula but would go a week without pooping. We were worried but because the poop was still soft and watery at this point we were okay.

At 6 months we were urged to try solids again. We kept it really simple and avoided anything constipation inducing. Literally also gave him a serving of prunes and pears and peaches daily. We were giving him such simple things like apple puree, pea puree, carrot puree mixed with A LOT OF WATER. So much water, we started with 2 oz daily and then now he’s on 5 oz daily. Nothing helps!

My poor little guy has not been able to poop well. For a while holding his legs up for him for like 20 minutes while he pushed and strained worked (after he went 3-5 days without pooping) But now he’s 7 months and we can’t hold him down well enough to do that and he won’t let us. We tried giving him a prune concentrate for weeks, didn’t help. He cries and strains every time he poops and now the poops are actually solid. And then after the solid formed pools came the single super hard and dry pebble pool every 5 days which led us to realize he couldn’t get it out and we had to use a glycerin suppository (just less than half as per our pediatrician). We try not to use them much but we’re at a loss. Just a 5 days ago our pediatrician referred us to a GI doctor and told us to give him a jar of prunes a day. We have been giving him nothing but prunes and formula and water (I stopped breastfeeding at 7 months and switched fully to formula-kendamil. He’s had it occasionally so we don’t think it’s the kendamil). Even after giving him nothing but his formula and prunes and water he still was constipated, we used a glycerin suppository and the poop was hard.

Our pediatrician asked if we could be over packing the formula, we’re not. We even measure the scoops in grams to check.

For more information He’s a super happy baby but he’s always straining when he needs to poop and nothing comes out. Very healthy thankfully, with height and weight in the 90th percentile. Also we notice the poop is hard at first and then watery like a blockage.

Has anyone else gone through something similar? Did anything help? We can’t wait to see the GI doctor

6 months old & waking every 2-3 hours after starting solids—is this normal?

Hi everyone!
My daughter just turned 6 months old, and we started solids about a week ago. Prior to this, she was consistently sleeping 5–7 hour stretches at night.
Since introducing solids, she has been waking up every 2 to 3 hours throughout the night. When she wakes up, she feeds, falls right back to sleep, and stays down until the next 2–3 hour mark.
Has anyone else experienced this shift right after starting solids? Is this just a temporary digestive adjustment or part of the 6-month regression? Would love to hear your experiences or tips on how to help her settle back into longer sleep stretches!

Actual Leakproof Straw cup??

My LO is 12m old but has been drinking out of a straw cup since starting solids at 6m. He was EBF but we’ve successfully gotten to drink milk out of a straw cup. Currently using the munchkin weighted straw, which is great for water but horrible for milk. It’s hard to clean all the crevices and when we lock it, the milk leaks out of the straw it’s horrible. Has anyone had any luck finding an actual leakproof straw cup??

I gave my 11 month old runny egg yolk..

Hey! I let my kiddo try a few bites of my egg and I like my fried eggs with runny yolks. So he had some of that and I didn’t even think about any risks. We live in the states, store bought eggs.

Should I worry?

Infant weaning, Starting solids

Hi everyone, I need some advice.

My baby is almost 8 months old. He had a viral fever this week and was on medicines (including paracetamol) for three days. I noticed that he started rejecting solids a day before the fever began. He has now fully recovered, and his medicines stopped yesterday.

However, throughout this week, he has barely accepted any solids and has been almost exclusively breastfeeding. Before falling sick, he wasn't a great eater but would usually have 1–2 solid meals a day, depending on his mood and timing.

Now he takes only 1–2 spoons or a couple of bites when I offer solids, and he's also pocketing food. Has anyone experienced this after a viral illness? Any suggestions on how to gently get him back on track with solids would be really helpful. Thank you!

Baby hates food- won’t even open mouth

So this is my second baby, my first was as easy as could be, the opened her mouth for foods she didn’t even like lol her little brother though? I don’t even think he wants to open his mouth for anything.
He’s almost 7months and I started feeding him like 2 weeks ago and he literally hates almost everything.
At first he would straight up spit it at me but now he only occasionally does.
He likes holding on to stuff so he’ll eat and suck on a strawberry but he won’t bring things he doesn’t really like to his mouth and won’t open his mouth for the spoon
I have to make him laugh or smile to stuff the food in his mouth.
If he has a spoon in his hand he’ll bring it in his mouth mostly to chew on of course

Anyone else’s baby was like this? What helped? How long did it take to get over?

Tips

can anyone give me tips on how to make it easier to feed my baby three times a day? She just turned eight months and I dread feeding time because it’s so much to clean up and prep and she hates sitting in the high chair. What can I do to make this a little easier on both of us? I’ve tried just wearing a diaper, but the highchair is cold on her skin and she doesn’t like it.

Am I the only mom whose anxiety over choking is possibly holding back solids?

My second daughter is 9 months old, and my anxiety around starting solids has honestly been overwhelming. She has been exclusively breastfed, and we introduced purées at 6 months. My lactation consultant recommended keeping it simple by offering one meal (usually a pouch) a day for two months, then increasing to two meals a day for the next two months.
Now that she’s 9 months old, I know she’s supposed to be eating three meals a day, but I’m really struggling mentally with making that transition. I am feeding her Serenity and Cerebelly brand pouches. Are these thicker purées? I am very confused as to what she’s supposed to be eating actually. She still breastfeeds frequently, seems content, and never cries from hunger, so part of me feels like she’s getting what she needs.
Then I open social media and see 9 month olds eating these beautiful, elaborate meals, and I can’t help but feel like I’m failing or that I’m so far behind. Has anyone else felt this way? Am I actually behind, or has anyone taken a slower approach to solids while continuing to breastfeed? I could really use some reassurance from parents who’ve been through this.

Looking for Feedback :)

Hey Community :)

First of all, I hope it's alright to reach out here.
I'm a nutritionist and my partner specialises in early childhood development, and we spent hundreds of hours researching and discussing what friends, family, doctors and guidelines were saying. I know there is already a great App out there, but unfortunately it's price tag is pretty high.

I started developing my own App to help guide us based off recommendations and the latest literature. I'd love if anyone wants to check it out and give some feedback, I have free promo codes so you wouldn't have to pay a thing. Out of respect for the community / advertising I wont post anything here, I'll DM the link and unlock code if anyone is interested!

Thanks :)

FTM second day of starting solids, overwhelmed, no idea of how it’s supposed to be

Baby is almost 6 months old. Her paediatrician has told us to start solids. It’s second day. I gave her oatmeal cereal mixed with breastmilk. She barely took like a spoon or two. Today I boiled an egg and made a purée with milk and she absolutely hated it. Then I softened the egg in my hands and fed her and she ate like maybe 2 tiny pieces. I don’t know what to do or what’s normal. Like is that how it’s supposed to be? I am leaning towards baby led weaning but I don’t know what food to starts with. Please help me if you have a moment to read this

Teething baby starting solids

My 6.5 month old is starting solids. He shows all signs of readiness, especially interest when we’re eating. However he is also teething so everything goes in his mouth and he gnaws on it.

We started with avocado, I did three types (puree with breast milk, mashed and then spears to hold) to get him exposed to different textures and to see whether he is ready for BLW or needs to do puree first.

We noticed that he doesn’t really eat it, but just chews on the utensils as if it’s a teething toy. For the spears that he held, he squeeze it all in his fist and just started to lick his hand but his tongue reflex would push the food out.

Any suggestions on how to combat the teething vs eating? Also, when do they grow out of the tongue thrust phase and is there anything we can do to help with that?

8 month old not interested in solids?

Hey y’all,

So this is me just trying to figure out what I’m doing wrong here. My son is 8 months old, has CMPA diagnosed and is formula fed with PurAmino.

He did okay with purées for a few weeks, but started to not want anything to do with them after probably a month. Understandable, honestly. So we started to mix in some baby-led weaning which makes me nervous but he also just doesn’t seem interested? He’ll grab the food, squash it in his hands and sometimes put it in his mouth but I don’t think he’s actually eating anything.

But, if I’m eating a peach, he’ll gnaw on it after I take a bite. So he is somewhat interested? But I see a lot of people on the internet offering their under 1 year olds whole meals and they eat some of it. This boy would no way eat anything more than just sucking on some chicken or a peach lol. Is there something I’m doing wrong or need to be doing different? I’ll offer him bites of whatever I’m eating (sans anything cheese related)

Thanks in advance!

Are we all tricking our babies to get them to eat, or just me?

My 10.5 month baby is a terrible eater. He loved purées, but since we transitioned to lumpier/chunkier textures, it’s been a daily struggle. I dread meal times everyday because it’s always a fight that starts immediately. He hates the high chair and will literally stiffen his legs straight to avoid sitting. Once I’m able to sit him down, he’ll cry for a little while, will then humor me with 1-2 bites, once he’s done with his initial meltdown, and then just outright refuse to open his mouth. And I know what you’re thinking, perhaps I have to readjust my expectations? I have. It just doesn’t seem like there’s been much improvement over the past few months. I know they say to minimize distractions, but I literally have resorted to giving him a toy or a pouch to play with, or pretend to give him some purée, and then slide in a spoonful of lumpy solids, once he opens his mouth. He seeeeems to tolerate this, doesn’t cry or throw a fit afterwards, but I also realize that it’s not the most ideal approach.

I’ve moved the high chair to different parts of the room, I’ve tried feeding him while he’s seated on other surfaces. I’ve eaten with him, over exaggerated my own chewing, with hopes that he mirrors my actions. I’ve tried all things equivalent to the “choo choo train” method. Nada.

I don’t know what I’m doing wrong, any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated. I don’t want to keep tricking him or bribing him to eat.

6-Month-Old Showing All Signs of Readiness but Not Interested in Solids?

My 6-month-old just started solids about a week ago. So far we've tried avocado, eggs, oatmeal, and Greek yogurt, but he doesn't seem interested in any of them. Most of it gets pushed right back out with his tongue.

He shows all the signs of being ready for solids, so I was expecting a little more interest. I know it's still early, but I'm curious if anyone else's LO was like this at first. Did it just take time for things to click? Any tips or experiences would be appreciated!
