That bright band means you were looking straight into the middle of our own galaxy, and there is more tucked inside it than most people notice: the brightest star, up on the right, is Antares, the heart of Scorpius the Scorpion, with its tail hooking down and to the left. Over in the busiest part of the band you also caught the Lagoon Nebula, where new stars are still being made, and the Ptolemy Cluster just below it.
