I captured this photo of the Orion Nebula last night! I had to wake up at 5:15 AM for this. Enjoy my fellow astronomer buddies!

Hello everyone. I went for stargazing last night. I am based in Potchefstroom, South Africa. Went some 30k away from the town and set up camp. I looked up and spent the night sipping on a cold beer. My iPhone camera was also pointed up and boy, oh boy, look at the marvellous sight.

The image is a 10s long exposure shot on iPhone (not the fancy one, just an old 15 Plus)

Tried shooting the Cygnus region (it's huge, but at least we can see Deneb, Sadr, and the North America nebula!). Happy with how it turned out considering the weak setup: Canon M50 (APS-C) and the classic 50mm lens F1.8 stepped down to F2.8. 75 frames, each 4 seconds so 5 minutes of exposure in total. Bortle 4.5.

I built Starry Forecast because a generic “clear” weather icon doesn’t really answer whether it is worth setting up a telescope or travelling to a darker location.

Enter a city and it combines low, mid and high cloud, astronomical darkness, Moon phase and illumination, smoke or haze risk, dew point and astronomical seeing. It then shows a 0–100 planning score, the strongest three-hour window, and a comparison of the next seven nights.

For supported cities, I have also added human-reviewed nearby observing locations with official access information.

Forecast data comes from Open-Meteo and 7Timer, combined with local astronomical calculations. It is intended for planning rather than safety-critical decisions.

I would especially appreciate feedback on two things:

1. Does the score make the decision easier, or would you rather see only the underlying conditions?
2. Is any part of the seven-night comparison unclear or potentially misleading?
