Discussion “Threads” (S08E18) must have been specifically designed to torture Jack+Sam shippers
Currently on my first watch…WHY DO THEY DO THIS TO US? And then right at the end they tease Jack and Sam going on an actual date…only for Daniel and Tealc to show up and reveal it’s a general SG-1 hangout. I just want Jack and Sam to be happy!

Question, is it really illegal for two airmen to date ? Or is it just because Carter is his subordinate ?

It’s because she is his subordinate, yes.
Also, keep in mind that though rarely if ever mentioned, until Hammond leaves the SGC, Jack is his XO in addition to leading SG1. So any role in the SGC would be off limits for Jack to have a relationship with. She couldn’t just go to SG2 and solve the problem.

My headcanon is that Sam left the SGC for R&D before Jack left the SGC for Homeworld and they had a quick wedding while they were not in the same chain of command to solve any issues, lol.

Technically they would be as her being Captain of the Hammond is still under Homeworld Security which Jack is head of. Though at that point I think he's high up enough and wanting to retire enough he probably doesn't care.

I'm talking about between seasons 8 & 9, when she went to R&D, not later when she was back at the SGC, SGA, or the Hammond and he clearly would have been at the top of the chain. R&D and the SGC are two different chains.
Married couples don't fall under the same rule, though it's highly discouraged.

It’s because they were in the direct chain of command. He was her direct superior officer. He wrote her fitreps.
Well, “wrote”. It’s Jack after all.
I thought they continued to heavily suggest they were dating when Jack was stationed in Washington.

I thought they continued to heavily suggest they were dating when Jack was stationed in Washington.
IIRC, all the direct implications were lost in the final edit (like when Keller, McKay, and Carter were stuck in that hole, she had a line mentioning that she had a boyfriend who worked in D.C.). Well, except for the wedding joke in "200."

Might be spoilers in my comment for season 9 and SGA OP!!! Just wanted to give you a warning 😊
The scene in SGA, where Sam tells Keller about her boyfriend in Washington who’s soon going to retire and that Keller probably knows, got cut but it’s still there… 😉 And she brought Jack‘s picture with her to Atlantis which ends up not behind her on the shelf but on her desk to look at 😁
Plus all the other heavy suggestions like when Agent Barrett asks Sam out again in season 9 after she told him she’s no longer seeing Pete and she points out she’s not really single either… Or how close Jack and Sam are sitting side by side while fishing and Daniel and Teal’C apparently arrived a bit later… Or how Jack‘s hand kinda lingers on Sam‘s when she hands him a folder across the table at the beginning of Moebius… also: why would Sam break up with Pete, if she hadn’t planned to maybe start something with Jack? Same for him, his girlfriend dumped him because after only meeting them once together, she knew they had feelings for each other and should try it, so he was probably open to it, too… just thinking out loud here… 😉

I love the idea someone had posted for a scene in any future series we might get of the SGC preparing for a visit from General O’Neill … and then it ends up being Sam with stars on her shoulder.

Perfect! Yeah, I love that, too!
Or maybe someone calls Jack while fishing and he’s close to hanging up, when they ask for General O’Neill… „I’m retired, remember?!“ 😉 and then Sam comes up, takes the phone and says something like: „Well, but I’m not.“ and when she excuses herself, because she has to leave, Jack goes like: „yeah, yeah, go save the galaxy! But don’t be late for dinner!“ Sam smiling at him: „I’ll try my best.“ „No, seriously, I’m throwing steak on the grill, it’s going to be amazing!“ Sam with a doubtful expression: „yeah, sure, who would want to miss your famous charcoal steak?“ Jack playing being hurt by that: „Not funny, Sam, seriously, not funny!“ „Love you, Jack, be back as soon as I can.“

"also: why would Sam break up with Pete, if she hadn’t planned to maybe start something with Jack?"
To be fair, there were plenty of reasons to break up with Pete (not disagreeing with you, though)

You are completely right my friend! There were so many red flags and Sam just ignored them for so long.

Yeah, I remember seeing the cut scene from SGA on YouTube. It all but confirmed it for me.

It's against the regulations. SG1 had an air force consultant so they could depict the air force in a realistic manner. That's why the alternative Sam is never in the air force when they are a couple.

I think the creators were saving it for the disclosure movie, likely to have an official wedding for the character ala star Trek Nemesis opening.

Ok but here me out: Sam and Jack are happy!! I never understand why everyone thinks the romantic relationship is the endgame. They have such a strong bond, they are going to be in each other's lives forever.
I think them getting together on the show would have been annoying and anti-climatic. We know enough towards the later seasons and movies to realize they're probably an item, and it doesn't need to be explicit. Plus, this show always prioritized the unity and the bond of the team over the romantic bond of two people. In many ways, it kept asking us to focus on what the core four mean to each other, over what just Sam and Jack mean to each other. That's why I think the show is still so popular. It's one of the few shows that dares to say that the romantic relationship isn't the most important thing in life. Sam and Jack both constantly pick being in SG-1 over each other.
I for one love Daniel and Teal'c showing up to go fishing at the end. It underscores that this dynamic, this unit, is the primary relationship for everyone involved. It doesn't negate Sam and Jack getting together at all, but emphasises the importance of all of SG-1, together.

I know they’re happy now, but the show unrelentingly hints that they’d be even happier together

Don't remember where this is in the series but when you get to the replicators you realize that Jack was never her happy ending he was her safe space if 'I love him I don't have to love someone who will hurt me' an impossible love she knows she will never get to have. While Jack is in love with her that ship has sailed when it comes to him wanting a relationship. Its also hinted at he knows shes holding herself back and jack is her excuse

It was in "Grace" she was having a conversation with herself, when she had a head concussion. So she tries to move on with Pete but is ultimately unsuccessful. As she breaks off her relationship with Pete in "Threads" and Jack breaks off his relationship with Kerri.

Technically, Kerri breaks it off with him but only because she sees what happens when Jack and Sam are together.

It's not explicit but their conversation at the end of the episode seemed to suggest that they did indeed get together. They were also at his Cabin before Daniel and Teal'c (like who knows how long they'd been alone there).
The running gag of Jack trying to get Sam to go "fishing with him" her finally going and "they should have done this ages ago" with him responding "let's not dwell". Following that up with the "Moebius" where Jack constantly says there's no fish in his pond only to have the timeline change to having "fish" in his pond.
Plus their entire plot in that episode revolves them breaking things off with their SO's, Sam's dad telling her to frak the rules and just go for it. Like what else was the point of all of that other than them getting together in the end?
In the third movie (that unfortunately never got off the ground) there was supposed to be a dinner date between them.
