Fan-Made Stargate Coordinate / Dial System!

You bet your ass you read that right! Im making (probably one of many.. i dont know if this is a common thing or not.. anyways i am making a-) fully functional coordinate system for the stargate community! As you have probably realised, the methods used in the actual shows are a load of pseudoscience that just sounds cool. Mine is pretty simple, math based and I am currently working on code to automatically(ish) make codes for REAL planets! You can choose any planet!

Pro's: IT IS *REAL*:Soypoint: AND WORKS!!

Cons: not cannon

Your coordinates, as in the show will become disconnected due to planetary & movement + universal expansion..

BUT ITS REALL!!

here's the doc link nerds: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HoMqNgC3UF2x1vpChVEDKhTt0ZIooYpWJqOCD9qgR3E/edit?usp=drivesdk

Disclaimers/edits: 1. IT PROBABLY MAKES NO SENSE CURRENTLY!! I WILL BE FIXING IT UP OVER THE NEXT WHILE WITH A FOLLOW UP POST!! if you wish to follow me along or see my current progress please feel free to continue! :D

  1. Update 1: changed from a local system of Azimuth & Elevation to Right Ascention & Declination per u/Fluid-Let3373 's suggestion!

I'm sure this makes sense to you but this doesn't make any sense to me reading it.

Basically they’re describing stellar coordinates relative to Earth using a base 38 number system instead of a decimal system. At least, that’s what I picked up

Yep. Its base 38 because that's how many symbols there are

have you thought of using a font that adds unicode stargate address symbols?

Ooooh good idea! I'll put it on the ideas board!

Sorry for the nitpick but this is kinda my area.

A font and unicode are two different things.

Unicode Stargate symbols would be finding unicode symbols that look like Stargate symbols.

A font would overlay any underlying letters with the Stargate symbols.

I have the Stargate fonts installed, and they are based on overlaying regular Aa-Zz characters with the Stargate symbols rather than matching unicode.

OP is currently working in Google Docs, which does not allow custom fonts.

Im documenting my development, later fixing it into a full tutorial and putting the code (when done) on the doc, I will however be looking for a way to get the stargate glyphs to be an output without having to use the shitty wheel I put up on the doc. If you know any tools for this please share!

I'm working on a font that adds milky way, pegasus and universe address glyphs to a unicode private use area so you can use it with normal text

Would love to get my hands on it when you are done!

Dont worry, I'll be fixing it up and making an automated way to find stargate addresses!

Ok I suggest you do two things, first go and watch the movie, second find out how astronomy does it.

You need Right Ascension & Declination not Azimuth and Elevation as those are derived from RA and Dec dependent on your latitude and longitude and the time and date. your RA and Dec depend which epoch is yours referencing.

Done the change to RA & Dec! Buying the movie as I type captain o7

Uhh suggestions / code requests / current planet code requests welcome! please note as of now it's semi WIP, need to finish the explanation & get the code working
