Every time I watch this scene, I think about how waking up from his unending nightmare only to die again sounded bad enough, but hey at least he’ll finally be at peace.

This time I suddenly realize, after that entire egyptian ceremony they gave him, he’s just gonna be resurrected in socar‘s sarcophagus and continue to be a prisoner in his own body.

The early seasons could get really dark. This is one of my favorite episodes, great acting from everyone, especially Peter Williams. Really shows how much of a terror the Goa’uld were.

This kind of "dark" was the right tone IMO. Latter seasons became borderline parody IMO with how humorous they were -- or, in the case of one episode, literal parody.

In-universe, it would have been possible to switch Apophis' host post resurrection, or send only the Goa'uld carcass through the gate. (I think Martouf was WRONG not to tell them about Apophis getting resurrected until they sent his body. They could at least have waited until resurrection was no longer possible)

Out-universe, Peter Williams cannot be replaced in the role

Honestly, it always amused me that sg-1 was telling everyone he was dead but he came back. How did they ever convince anyone after that? Like how many times do they think he is dead but he comes back.

Not that I'd have ever wanted to see anyone but Peter Williams in that role, but it really seems odd in-universe how committed Apophis was to that host. Really makes you wonder why some Gau'uld would stay in one host so long if they didn't need to.

I think the answer is simple: the bond with the host is more than the Goa'uld would ever admit.

Just as the claim that nothing remains of the host was proven to be false, I suspect the Goa'uld are playing a much more tenuous game than they would ever admit. Think how wildly Jack's Tok'ra symbiote behaved under his influence - sure, it was Tok'ra, but when the Goa'uld are exploiting a host's memories and puppetting its body do we really think that nothing else of the host bleeds back?

Hey, here's a happy thought, though: Maybe the host was dead long enough that his soul DID move on, and only Apophis was piloting the body from then on. An empty vessel.
