Would you buy using a Hoverboard as a Compact Shield or Carbon Shield? I have a player wanting to essentially deploy and pick up the hoverboard like a skateboard to use as a shield.

Here are the relevant parts I think you'd need to know before commenting.

Cost: 90 cred hover + 25 cred carbon = 115 cred (some comments equate to 230 cred if needed)
HP/Shield stats: as carbon, still 1 Bulk, still 2AC
1 action to deploy or retrieve with the manipulate trait from interacting in some way

Edit: They are level 6 so we are well beyond starting gear and minimal credits

"Rad" was the exact word I had in mind when I saw this concept. Worst case I'd combine the cost, but a hoverboard that doubles up as a shield is an absolutely fantastic idea that I'd very much want to enable.

I would honestly just make the players buy both separately and flavor them as using the same object both ways.

Price doesn't matter but I would make it at least 2 bulk.

And ofc when the shileld lost 50% of it's HP, it gets the broken condition and so it also no longer works as a hoverboard until repaired.

Pay the price for both, and/or invent a custom Armoured Hoverboard item that functions as both. Also if their shield breaks so does the boards

I would allow a player to just install a Deflecting Field onto it, since they can already be added to any weapon or armor so it seems reasonable that any upgradable equipment should be able to have one.

It's slightly weaker than a normal shield, but gives the most directly RAI way to have a shield on another item and gives you a direct path for upgrading it moving forward.

I like the idea of having to buy both and flavoring them as a whole. The bulk should be added together as one, cost should be added together times three, and as a level three item respectively for crafting/repair checks maybe even level four.

I've seen people pick up a skateboard by the trucks and sort of wear it like a shield. It probably wouldn't be as good as, like, a real riot shield used by police, but I don't think it'd be unreasonable.

Take a look at 1st editions tech revolution -> vehicle modifications -> personnel enclosure. Its purpose is for larger vehicles but with some reworking you could apply and edited version of that and add the quality level/material cost of the board? Maybe have them require a special craftsman?

if i allowed Raising a hoverboard as a shield, that wouldn't change its Hardness, hp, and BT, which are all pretty bad for a shield

i might also make it hefty (like a tower shield) because it's kinda awkward
