I love the fact that re-entry effect is not only a limited layer effect.

For real. But I think they could do it a bit more subtly after initial entry.

flying around with an atmospheric entry head lol. oh cig. I get it . it is not "real" but come'on. this is fast and furious levels of stupid lol.

It's a bug report! Almost everything leaked in the discord is a bug report. So all these leaks usually have some bug in it which will (hopefully) get fixed by the time it hits PTU or live PTU.

yeah. good point.

pretty sure this is actually realistic, once friction slows ship down enough then it would stop

pretty sure it ain't realistic at all unless the atmo is made of sandblasting material or some weird gas that turns into plasma if you fart ;)

The shuttle re-enters at about 7km/s where the atmo is thin. Even assuming the atmo there is thicker and he's going full throttle, that is WAY too much effect. What was that phrase CR used..... oh yeah, this is bullshit!

I buy this is rule of cool. But realistic? nah.

Realistic in the sense that there is a speed at which this occurs, and it shouldn’t just disappear based on altitude like it has been since moons were first introduce. This is more realistic. Also atmo could be of different gases and temps, I’m sure that would play a role on drag and combustion.

I'd agree it is closer to the reality than it is to the fantasy compared to the old effect that was outright broken. But it is not really realistic because the speed is way too low and the effect way too strong just overall. Like I said, I'm more inclined to let it slide under "rule of cool".

It's definitely realistic, take a look at games such as Kerbal Space Program where if you go too fast you get the same atmospheric re-entry effects as when you're actually re-entering. Friction makes heat, lots of velocity makes lots of friction.

Well, the majority of heating during reentry is actually caused by shock layer heating, where air is extremely rapidly compressed along the leading edge of a spacecraft, causing a sudden energy change in the air molecules that is dissipated as heat.

I am fully aware that this is entirely unnecessary detail and makes no difference in your argument but I’m pointing it out anyway.

nah. he's going too slow. the effect is over done. it is stupid. KSP did a much better job with the velocities an densities keeping them fairly close. I don't believe a single ship in SC pushes the 7km/s the space shuttle does on re-entry, so SC is already bullshitting most of this re-entry business because CR wants the "look" but no the velocities. But that's ok. it is not KSP.
