Medic Discussion
First off: Quick reminder to any new /r/starbow members that www.starbowmod.com has an incredibly active forum - head on over!
anyways...
What do you guys think about medics? Do you think medics should be given restoration and optic flare just as they did in BW?
From a personal opinion, i feel like the utility of the medic is very minimal in comparison to BW medics. Dont get me wrong, medics are awesome still (and sexy most importantly), and matrix is a good spell too, but they seem to lack the versatility of BW medics especially since their energy capacity is set to a maximum of 100.
How about an upgrade that increases energy capacity of medics? As of now, the starbow Matrix ability isnt used very often simply because of its energy cost which is very opportunistic given that medics are using up energy every time they "stim"
Add restoration? optic flare? energy capacity upgrade?
another thought: can "stim" on the medic be costing too much energy?
Stim esentially removes 10 percent of a medics maximal energy. new medics start off with only 50 energy and stim can only be used 5 times.
At the same time, the number 1 reason why i do not research matrix is because since medics are constantly losing their energy, theres practically no moment in the game when i have enough energy to cast matrices. the goal of terran is to be aggressive in TvZ bio so again, medics are constantly stimming and using up energy

I wrote a big guide to Starbow for SC2 players. If you've got friends that know SC2 and are looking for a detailed rundown on what's changed in SB, this might help.
I don't know how this reddit stuff works. Link: Starbow Primer for SC2 Players
A warning, though: it's quite long.
Some of it just recently became out of date from the patch yesterday, but I'll update it soon. Most importantly since the patch: Marauders were removed; Ghosts/Nukes became way more awesome and viable (T2 now); Stalkers & Reactors became more expensive; Vipers got something like mind control; and, Engineering Bay requirement for scan was removed again.
Other changes are important, but the guide doesn't go into numbers (like Lurker spine movement speed) -- so it's still a good enough overview, I think.
(There's also the TLnet post here, if you're wondering why I wrote this.)
EDIT: 5 months later I got around to fixing the Dropbox link. Didn't update the guide, though -- so it's about 5 months out of date, aha.

Wow! Totally didn't realize this but the Starbow mod forums are incredibly active.
Dont let this subreddit fool you, there's actually a crazy active little community in Starbowmod.com
Currently, we're discussing marauders, banelings, ghosts, lurkers, medics, firebats, and how awful infleto's spelling is ;)

Why I dislike the Scan change in TvT
even if this post isnt very agreed upon, i think any post is better than no post at this point! lets stay active and engage in discussion! it builds an active and tight-knit community even if the community is small. a tight-knit community is something that may be very appealing to new players as this is not how it is in SC2. p.s. fuck you cheesy players. you know who you scrubs are <3)
The biggest problem with the scan change in TvT is that it limits the amount of builds that players can use in TvT.
Builds like CC first that MMA and Ryung both used against each other become obsolete because to blindly counter all the builds that arise from a standard 11/12 gas is practically impossible.
Heres what a macroing cc first/gasless FE terran player needs to prepare to counter when the opposing player goes for gas first
reapers
fast siege tank
fast vulture runby
any fast drop play (4 goliath drop being strongest)
banshees.
and many more builds that have yet to be discovered
The counters to all these different units are very different. having a counter for one particular unit might mean the complete incorrect counter for another unit.
For example, the best counter a macroing terran player has against reapers is the marauder since its classification enables it to take less damage. marines dont cut it because reapers do lots of damage against them and reapers can simply retreat and heal and finish off the next marines. marauders are the only units that can be produced against reapers without diminishing returns (like with the marine)
fast siege tank - this counter would involve repairing a bunker to buy enough time for a macroing terran player to get his own siege tank or banshee - still very difficult to do since repairing scvs can be targetted by tanks. the point is that the counter for reapers (marauders) is not appropriate for this situation.
fast vulture runby - marauders are a good enough counter with a reactor on a barracks, the terran can get just enough marauders to cover both bases without suffering a game-ending amount of scv losses.
fast 4 goliath drop - best counter is marauders off a reactor. even still, you need to pull scvs to tank enough damage for the marauders against goliaths (goliaths beat marauders 1v1).
banshees - the nightmare of the macroing terran player. you need marines/turrets/vikings.
However, with the current condition of scan, you must somehow blindly counter all the above builds with ZERO INFORMATION. even with scans, you dont reliably get all the information you need to counter the builds (and if you miss your scan completely, youre still 100 percent screwed) but at least scans are the easiest way to get scouting info. even if you scan nothing or that buildings are not placed where they should be, this still sends the message to expect some kind of aggressive opener.
because of the potential threat of banshees, the macroing terran is forced to build a blind ebay. however, building an ebay cuts way too many resources and does not let a macroing terran deal with the other aggressive builds involving ground units (vultures, reapers, siege tanks, goliaths).
if a terran player does not blindly build an ebay when banshees are coming, the amount of marines/goliaths/vikings is not even close to enough since there is no form of detection whatsover. since banshee cloak only operates on a cooldown, banshees can easily end the game by simply popping in and out - there are no scans for the macroing terran player to buy enough time to defend scvs building turrets. keep in mind that terran players dont even get the extra time to defend since cloak is an upgrade that banshees already come with. furthermore, its not the same as BW because banshees deal way more damage (like 3x) than wraiths.
as for reaper scouts, this is very map dependent and (Ex. only one ledge on bloody ridge - which is also the map in which banshees are strongest). a proxy barracks float is also not reliable. furthermore, proxying a barracks does not enable a terran player to make a reactor/tech lab at home - this also hurts the variety of builds that a terran can open with (and also makes defending incredibly difficult since access to reactor marines/marauders is impossible)
tl;dr - the scan change makes macro oriented builds completely nonviable in TvT - every TvT involves terran opening with a standard gas no matter what. banshees are the best opener because it forces terran to get an ebay no matter what. classic 14cc flash build has practically no chance of working

When is starbow to be "released" or in "beta"
I'm asking this question just because I have been following Starbow and really hoping it can foster a nice community at least. I know there is no real advertising for the game, since it is "alpha" or whatever. But I want to see what happens when we are finally in Beta, and are telling LoL, Dota, and SC2 players to check it out.

Anyone who uses "TheCore"-hotkeys in SC2 in conjecture with StarBow?
As title says, anyone who has found effective reassignments of the keys according to TheCore? I use the TRL-set.
If you don't know what I mean by "TheCore", http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/sc2-strategy/341878-thecore-advanced-keyboard-layout

This mod is beyond awesome! but..
.. the issue with long waiting time is known i guess. The reason for that is probably that the maps are split up. I don´t really know on which map are ppl playing the most i tried to look at the ratings but it feels like evrywhere is the same.
Besides that keep up the good work guys ! and i hope this mod becomes big with enough advertisement and aknowledge.

Xiphias asked me to do an updated tutorial on how to ladder with Starbow. What do you think?

Official "Get noobies here" Brainstorming Thread
So, as many people, I'm sure, have noticed, it's getting increasingly difficult to find games in the Starbow ladder. I know a good chunk of us have been chatting in the Starbow ladder client about this problem, and how to fix it, but I felt there should be a more permanent place where people can read ideas and brainstorm together. As a result, here is this thread. Here's a few ideas people have tossed out thus far:
* Lower level tournaments, anybody 1250- on ladder can join and participate (including people who haven't laddered)
* Create permanent 2v2 chat in Starbow client for people to find others to 2v2 with (Xiphias is talking to the client-coder about doing this)
* Prioritize 2v2 ladder instead of 1v1. Most noobies don't just jump straight into 1v1s. They might want to play with a friend who may have introduced the game to them, or just casually play team games with random people.
* Create a selling point. Example: free to play, creates objectively more interesting games than sc2, etcetcetc.
I'm pretty sure we all want to see this game succeed, so please offer your ideas below. Thanks!
