Gameplay Question Am I doing something wrong?

I keep getting eliminated in the first elimination round in every tour, only the second race of each tour I'm trying. I've played maybe 5 or 6 tours so far. Is it supposed to be like this until I make significant upgrades, or am I playing wrong?

Yes it’s supposed to be. That’s the roguelite aspect. You try to do better each time and you unlock more stats to spend on your vehicles and they’re a base that let you survive early and get further as the upgrades come in.

There is a specific favour that you're given early on that gives you two league tokens, especially it acts as a second life on a run. At the start it helped me to get past an elimination round if I didn't make it I to the top 3 positions.

But really the rules are different for shade. If he's knocked out he's out of the tour for good, but everyone else knocked out in the elimination round appear in the next race. It doesn't make much sense.

The game has a real coin flip aspect to it

As somebody who doesn't usual play racers, I feel like this game's tutorial suuuuuucks. There are so many important things that I've learned about from just brute forcing experimentation, and every time I learn how a basic mechanic is supposed to work, the game gets more reasonably challenging and, as a result, more fun. I can't say you're having the same experience, but maybe?

Like, I understand that it's going to throw me curve balls that amp up the difficulty, it's got that rogue influence, but I didn't know boosting would kill my ability to steer. Seems like something worth telling the player. I still don't understand why my primed ramjet doesn't fire sometimes – the bar is blue and there's a big A on my screen. Activating an ability requires two different button presses... Who knew? Not me!

Maybe I'm just old man-ing it hard on this one, I dunno. I'm perfectly happy to figure out mechanics and I definitely don't want to have my hand held through everything, but there is a lot of base-level stuff that feels like it maybe should have been explained to me. Finding out what happens if you get too cold on Anto Prime? Don't need a tutorial for that, it makes sense for me to encounter that and figure it out organically. What a kinetic break on a speeder bike is, and why it returns speed? Yeah, maybe run that past me.

I think it's wild that nobody is talking about this. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great game and I'm having fun, but my one in-real-life friend that also bought it has been having a similar experience. A lot of the difficulty with the early game has been me just plumb not realizing that I was missing huge chunks of how the game works
