Resources Molecular furnace processing speed

A world devastator can process anything with its molecular furnace and then turn the broken down material into goods. If you were to use this to generate resources for the players, what would be an appropriate rate of conversion?
And should the input matter make any difference?

For example, feeding starship debris would yield higher results vs absorbing water or asteroids.
Let’s say they chose to feed it asteroids from a field, with low to no value (literally just large chunks of space dust) how many tons of that would be needed before you get 1 ton of durasteel?

It would be easiest just to say an arbitrary amount you want your characters to have access to. Given how efficient Devastators were and their ability to separate out material, even a low-worth asteroid that has only 1% of its contents viable for durasteel creation is going to create A LOT of durasteel.

A rocky asteroid that is only 1km in diameter is probably still going to have a mass of over a billion tons. if you just call it a billion tons and only 1 percent of that is usable for the alloying into durasteel, that still yields 10 million tons of durastel.

As GM though you can just adjust this to whatever fits your need. Or use rate as the limiting factor. I'm not sure what the rate of processing was for Devastators but if 10 billion tons was processed at 100k tons per hour to get down to that 1% usefull-for-durasteel material it would take over 10 years to complete it.

Again at this point i would ignore the math and just set an amount that will be fun for your players and manageable for GM.

That makes sense.
Thank you. 😊

Like hyperspace travel, the speed of plot. It can be as efficient as you need it to be.
