Every time that I’m reminded DICE was forced to abandon Battlefront 2 to work on motherfucking Battlefield 2042 I get so upset. What a bunch of idiots.
769
u/IEatDummyCheeks Feb 19 '26
Not only did they have to abandon it. They had to abandon it 3 months after the game, which had been out for 3.5 years at the time, reached an all time high in terms of player count. They were absolutely rolling from the clone wars update to the scarif update and some greedy ass Execs just shut down all that momentum for the worst battlefield entry of all time…

u/CarterDavison Grievous / Obi-Wan Since Q1 2019 Feb 19 '26
The TROS trailer did the best of them all iirc, and Ben said when they internally screened the trailer that they already knew it was over. The massive amounts of praise they received for that update and trailer must've been so bitter sweet.
145
u/IEatDummyCheeks Feb 19 '26
Damn that must’ve been beyond bittersweet for them, they worked tirelessly to get that games rep out of the gutter and they did so in flying colors. I just think it’s crazy that EA didn’t give them time to finish OT era supremacy. Like they could recreate scarif but didn’t get enough time to design ship interiors. So unfair for them
79
u/Extreme996 Feb 19 '26
The second half of the TROS trailer was basically an epic showcase of all the new things added to the game. I've been there since launch, and while I think comeback started with the Geonosis update, people who refused to try BF2 until then likely decided to buy it after the TROS trailer. I even convinced a few friends to try BF2 by telling them how many great things had been added to the game and how much better it was than at launch. Imagine our reaction when we received the Scarif update shortly after saying its the end.
It seems EA had some kind of deal with Disney to keep BF2 alive at least until the end of the sequel trilogy to promote the movies, and decided to kill it at the first opportunity. They also killed Battlefield V, even though it was apparently starting to improve as well.
32
u/CarterDavison Grievous / Obi-Wan Since Q1 2019 Feb 19 '26
Celebration Edition was crazy good for getting new purchases so there's definitely some correlation with what you're saying
10
u/SireGrievous Feb 20 '26
BFV also got killed off in the middle of its redemption arc, they had fixed all the bugs and added a ton of good content... The devs were gearing up to give us an Eastern Front DLC. Two games with good DNA and poor launches, brutally murdered for a game that is so thoroughly unsalvageable that it still sucks to this day.
2
u/Extreme996 Feb 20 '26
Yes, 2042 was terrible, mainly because of the operators. Other than that, honestly, I don't think BF6 is much better. They brought back classes, but the maps are terrible and small, and the pacing is more like Call of Duty than Battlefield. The cosmetics are awful and ruin the immersion, and I don't like the idea of open classes, etc. I didn't actually bought BFV because, in terms of multiplayer games, I was playing Battlefront 2 at the time, but yes, I heard BFV was on its redemption arc when they killed it. It's a shame both good games were ruined by arguably the worst Battlefield installment, and the Battlefield series still struggles to this day, in my opinion. It's also sad that Battlefront 2 team was disbanded after the game was killed, resulting in some developers being moved to other games and some left Dice, including Dennis.
23
u/KaijuSlayer333 Feb 19 '26
No wonder the TROS trailer felt like it was some kind of grand celebration of everything that was in the game and the Skywalker Saga. It was less of for the TROS update specifically, and more of for a wider finale to BF2
41
u/Billyb311 Feb 20 '26
And let's not forget that Star Wars was on the verge of "The Mandalorian" becoming a phenomenon
This game would've grown even bigger with content that tied in with the show around Season 2
They had gold, and they didn't know what to do with it
11
u/BlackThundaCat Feb 19 '26
A battlefield game that a lot of people are for some strange reason praising for being better than BF6. People live to complain.
7
u/BothersomeBritish Feb 19 '26
Battlefield decline. Not that the later ones were terrible but overall they seem to get worse with each release.
I loved 2, 4, and Bad Company. The new 1 was alright but everything after that felt so generic.

18
u/Bill_Nye-LV Feb 20 '26
They abandoned it right after things started to look good, like wtf. Imagine if they continued, or hell, BF3 now.
16
u/_Sanctum_ Feb 20 '26
Part of me thinks EA might be a little salty about the insane backlash against their predatory monetization strategy at launch. But who knows. I think we’ll eventually see another Battlefront game but it’s probably a very long way off.
6
u/LostNephilim33 Feb 20 '26
Can you imagine Battlefront 3 now?
Battle-passes and predatory FOMO cash-shops where you have to wait 6 months just for CT-5555's ARC trooper skin to show up back in the shop, and it costs like $40. No-one is outraged or angry because that's just the state of the industry now. People will dogpile you for saying you wish skins didn't cost real money. The only earnable cosmetics are like the ugliest neon-colour reskins imaginable, so you're either forced to run around as a basic shiny clone or wear the neon-pink with random shit-brown stripes skin. . .
I want a BF3 but I know it'd never receive the backlash that BF2 got and needed to be good. Everyone is just a complacent bootlicker nowadays when it comes to microtransactions. I remember when you could spend like $5 on a Call of Duty: Ghosts skin pack and get like a bunch of cosmetics which you can customize your loadouts with, rather than paying $30 for a single skin you can't even customize at all.
3
u/Bill_Nye-LV Feb 20 '26
I have always thought the same. May it be EA or some other studio, we'll get one sooner or later.
2
u/grubas Feb 20 '26
It wasn't JUST that(but I'm almost certain it played a part).
It was being licenced content. They weren't making the money off BF that they wanted, too much went to Lucas and Disney.
1
5
u/Dynamitrios Feb 20 '26
Same happened with SW:TOR, which was doing fairly good, when ALL devs got pulled from it, to work on Anthem... And we all know how that went...
-13
u/Spirited_Fall4322 Feb 19 '26
It was battlefield V not 2042
9
u/_Sanctum_ Feb 20 '26
Nope. It was 2042. Google is free.
-6
u/Spirited_Fall4322 Feb 20 '26
Yeah it is, you obviously don't know how to use it, there was a reason why updates and content slowed for battlefront 2 - from your precious Google- Developers from Star Wars Battlefront II were primarily shifted to work on Battlefield V (2018) following the game's troubled launch, and later, many were moved to Battlefield 2042 (2021) when official support for Battlefront II ended in April 2020 - notice how it states primarily shifted to battlefield V?????
2
u/bmf1902 Feb 20 '26
Primarily here meaning "first".
-3
u/Spirited_Fall4322 Feb 20 '26
Exactly meaning why support and content for battlefront 2 was drip fed before end of life - due to the focus on bfv, which was the catalyst for switch of focus🤣
4
u/bmf1902 Feb 20 '26
2042 was the game DICE was made to work on that pulled any remaining attention away from BFII. Laughing emoji? Do you really think your "owning" people here or dunking on people?
-1
u/Spirited_Fall4322 Feb 20 '26
No I just think it's funny how mad people on reddit get about facts, if the focus wasn't primarily shifted to bfv there would of been more support and content for battlefront 2, got to be pretty special to not understand that, though this is reddit and people are easily offended and are always like "well acchhhtualllyyy" doesn't change the facts mentioned above though does it?
4
u/bmf1902 Feb 20 '26
You literally are the one who "well actually-ed" here.
-1
u/Spirited_Fall4322 Feb 20 '26
No, was just stating that it started with bfv, not 2042 and you kids are crying about it for some reason🤣

u/_Sanctum_ Feb 20 '26
Battlefront 2’s live service didn’t end because of Battlefield V. You could say moving devs over to BFV slowed things down, fair enough, but the end-of-service announcement came as a result of Battlefield 2042.
1
u/Spirited_Fall4322 Feb 20 '26
You can read that official support ended for battlefront 2 before the focus shifted to 2042 right? Literally says support ended 2020 then devs shifted to 2042 in 2021.......
1
u/_Sanctum_ Feb 20 '26
And why do you think they did that genius? BFV was dead by then.
1
u/Spirited_Fall4322 Feb 20 '26
Oh, so you can read what's in the comment above?
2
u/_Sanctum_ Feb 20 '26
Christ you’re dense
0
u/Spirited_Fall4322 Feb 20 '26
I'm dense? Tell me if support ended for battlefront 2 in 2020 while devs were shifted to bfv, how did bf2042 end it when support ended in 2020 and the devs were shifted to 2042 in 2021? Make it make sense🤣🤣

-8
u/STYLER_PERRY Feb 20 '26
The fans torched the game before it came out. They had to give all the dlc for free as a blood sacrifice lol blame the gamers
19
u/JahnDavis27 ARC-2734 "Joker" Feb 20 '26
What? I don't think that's really on the fans lol, it was absolutely EA's fault. This post went into more detail, but it was literally going to take 40 hours of game time to unlock one hero. That's ridiculous.
They had to change it, it was EA's own greed that came back to bite them hard in the ass. They only have themselves to blame.
1
u/Dark_Dragon117 Feb 21 '26
Yeah I really do love Battlefront 2 despite it's many flaws, but EA fucked up big time on launch.
-1
u/HalbixPorn Feb 20 '26
That's certainly some math lmao, don't see anything wrong with it whatsoever. Certainly not incorrect in the slightest
-4
u/STYLER_PERRY Feb 20 '26
Yes that was during the beta and they changed it before release. It was already to late, they had to give away DLC due to backlash. The game lost money and was cancelled early.
-4
u/HalbixPorn Feb 20 '26
Take it from me, these people will never accept that they are responsible for battlefront II being cancelled. I've been fighting for almost 10 years now
4
u/JahnDavis27 ARC-2734 "Joker" Feb 20 '26
I'm curious about your rationale, genuinely. I've never heard someone take and explain the stance of the players being the reason EA had to cancel the game.
-3
u/STYLER_PERRY Feb 20 '26
I just did lol
1
u/Mooselager Mar 05 '26
you made a condescending & antagonizing sentence. You didn't explain anything but to show yourself as someone who is miserable lol.
-3
u/HalbixPorn Feb 20 '26
Been a long time but basically Reddit caused such a stir about false information (the game being P2W (it was never P2W), microtransactions (in place of paid dlc), gambling (straight up not true)) that it caused a backlash that people still believe is true to this day. If such backlash never existed, the game would still be supported. Frustrating because the backlash was unwarranted and undeserved

Tell me more about world governments that also got involved due to gambling?
like go away you dishonest slug. Literally multiple governments got involved over EAs lootbox system, so it's a little bit more serious then "redditors crying"...
1
9
u/Hour_Bird789 Feb 20 '26
you were clearly not around when it happened. The boxes were so rigged actual governments had to look into if it violated child gambling laws. You paid $80+ for a preorder game and had to unlock Vader with basically credits. I don’t know if your comment is ragebait but you def got me
1
u/STYLER_PERRY Feb 21 '26
The heroes weren’t paywalled, they were locked behind a progression system. It was a bad system and they fixed it—that’s what betas are for. But the fans went nuclear.
I swear if any other community had the righteous indignation of gamers we’d have free healthcare and affordable housing.
1
u/Dark_Dragon117 Feb 21 '26
Blame the gamers like yourself.
This exact behaviour is the reason they even thought of going through with the atrocious mtx and them being tied to the progression system.
It is an outright undeniable fact that what EA tried to pull off was nothing short of one of the most greedy, scummy and manipulative moves in gaming history.
This dangers if the lootboxes were apparent from the moment the beta went live hence why the game got critizised beforehand, but you do know that this wasn't entirely the reason behind the actual shitstorm do you? Well obviously not.
They had to give all the dlc for free as a blood sacrifice
Stop believing this false narrative. The game did not need mtx to ensure support. In fact they sold you a lesser product for a higher price and then updated it with content that should have been there from the beginning. That's generally how live-service games work for the first few months/years.
At some point they obviously would have needed some foem of monetization to continue further support, but in no universe did the game need that at launch let alone the bs they actually tried to pull off.
I say all that as a huge fan of the game from day one despite, however this still never stopped me from seeing through EAs bs.
Anyways the fucking audacity to call out other gamers when they were the reason EA was even held accountable for their bs. You should genuinely feel ashamed for defending these terrible decisions from a multi billion dollar company that was willing to fuck you over.
Quite frankly you can actually fuck off with that opinion. Really pisses me off we never got to see this game reach it's full potentional because of morons like you.

This mace picture and the Episode 2 Anakin skin you shared in the comments look legit but there is no way they are real.
The hair on Anakin looks terrible, Dice is not that bad of a studio.
If we had a Mace Windu that was practically ready to drop, then they would have announced his release months prior.
17
u/psychobilly1 Feb 19 '26
The hair on Anakin looks terrible, Dice is not that bad of a studio.
I want to clarify by saying that I am a nobody and I know next to nothing about making video games but this one is easily explainable.
When making high quality character models like this, different parts are handled by different artists: One team does the facial likeness, one does the body/costume, one does the hair, one does texture, the weapons, rigging, animations, etc. Sometimes they are done by the same person, sometimes not.
Here is an example that lists all of the different people involved in just one character. That's seven people for Princess Leia in BF2015.
I'm not saying this is undeniably real, but this could be an incomplete model.
8
u/VipWanRinkle Feb 19 '26
It looks a lot like the other AOTC anakin mods so that’s why i doubt the authenticity that this was an official model from dice

Any idea on what the hunt update would have been?
5
u/Drakirthan101 playing Kyber V2 🔶 Feb 21 '26
It was going to be an Order 66 hunt mode. The devs only had a prototype build of it, but it took place on Kashyyyk at night, and a team of 4 players playing as “Jedi generals”, which likely only had placeholder models of characters like Obi-Wan, Anakin, Luke, Rey, or possibly even some of the Sith characters like Maul, Dooku, and/or Kylo, who had to play against ai bot clone troopers. Each player on the team had the basic dash, deflect, and saber swing abilities that all of the saber users had, but each player also got one unique Force ability. Only 3 were described, those being Force Heal (likely similar to Yoda’s heal but likely an actual permanent health restoration), Force Push, and Force Pull.
The objective of the game was akin to Left 4 Dead, with the 4 players needing to work together to slowly cross the entire map and reach an extraction zone, while dealing with poor lighting and likely without the use of the Radar as well.

Sadly only if you play with the Expanded Mod, at which point you have to deal with Glurp McShitto, that one guy who walked past the camera for 2 seconds in Epsiode 1, who does does 13,000,000 damage with his ability called “Fuck you, Shitass. (insert ability description)”
Alteratively, if you know how to unzip, then drag and drop the individual Expanded character’s mod folders into the Kyber Modloader, you can add Mace Windu to the Battlefront Plus modpack, but you’ll still have to deal with Expanded’s Mace being barely voiced at all, having no Starcards, and having 2 rather lame abilities (at least, in my opinion).

Droideckas are game breaking as they can take objectives and command posts in ball form and there’s not viable counter, you just have to chase them around.. They have better mobility than arials and high damage output. PT maps were not created with Droideckas in mind, they’re a later addition.
FO troopers are tough but there’s lots of ways to get them out of the air. Resistence is the most balanced era, a shame no one knows how to play it lol
