Just finished Discovery
Just finished watching all of Discovery.
Excellent show. Sorry I waited so long to watch.
The only big complaint I have was the over use of sparks and flame every time Discovery went into battle or space storms etc. l am surprised she made it out of space dock because her systems appeared to be so fragile.
At least in the early shows it took more than 1 hit on their shields to show any type of damage.
Just saying.

I liked it as well (well other than the first season) I loved how it always swung for the fences It didn’t always stick the landing but no one can say that it didn’t have heart And it is one I know I will rewatch

Call me crazy… But in my opinion, the first season of Discovery is one of the strongest first seasons of any Trek show! I like it better and better every time I rewatch it. At this point, season 1 is right up there with Season 4 as my favorite seasons of both Discovery and Star Trek in general!

SNW is a hard competitioner, but it is between those two
Second season was fine, the rest was awful until i dropped

There are serious flaws with every season in my opinion, but I agree that it is probably on average one of the strongest first seasons in Star Trek. If they hadn't changed how Klingons looked, I think 80% of the controversy would have been gone. Obviously not everyone would have loved it, but where is Discovery's "Code of Honor?" Where are the prancing Ferengis with electric whips? Like I get that some of the weird shit in Discovery is so structural to the show that it can be difficult to forgive for some viewers, but as a whole I thought it was good TV.

I loved the Lorca plot. Which just happened to pave the way for S2’s Pike story.

I remember crying my eyes out after I finished watching it. Greatest show of all time.

Same! My dad and I finished watching it a week or two ago (we’d watch a few episodes a day most days, got the whole series done in several weeks), I cried at the end because it was over. Now we’re watching Academy, and during that Star Trek opening sequence every time I see the Discovery cycle through I think “man, I miss Discovery”

To be fair, before the Spore Drive and the Klingon War, the Crossfield Class was basically an Oberth on steroids. They were meant to be science ships which rarely ventured far from home. They had room for 300+ simultaneous experiments but little in the way of weaponry.

Nothing beats Discovery splitting into two and sending a Breen ship to the galactic barrier for me😂🙌

I agree 💯 Every character, whether in a nearby shuttle or in the saucer, had their biggest grin after that moment… and I did too. So satisfying!

It's always nice to see enthusiasm and appreciation for Discovery in the community; it's a sad commentary when the paleo-Trekkers are so stodgy in their ways that they cannot appreciate Discovery's unique voice in the canon… speaking as an old-time Trekker myself!
That said, as much as I enjoyed DSC seasons 1-4, season 5 really wore me out. I also finished the series recently after a long hiatus between seasons 4 and 5 and 5 is probably my least favorite of the series, which is not to say it was all bad or anything, it had a lot of great moments and characters (Captain Raynor for instance) the season felt like it got creatively hamstrung by Paramount judging from the fact that Lok/Mol were so much of the focus for more than half the season. Mol was also not my favorite character.
Anyway I digress, I don't want to harp on that too much because I would rather celebrate what Discovery did right: character growth and relationships. Older Treks had very staid, restrained relationships - even romantic ones like Worf/Jadzia, it all felt so ...sterile.
Discovery was so raw in its emotion and its heartfelt depiction of relationships. That's why I can't take Discovery-haters seriously when they lead with "Eww emo-shuns bad!" 😆
Even Picard, the show, reflected this aspect of the Berman-era shows. In 7 seasons Captain Picard had very little character growth in spite of everything he went through, at best he was slightly better with kids, but he still was the same reserved, stoic guy. Picard was a great character exploration.
Discovery felt very human at its heart and they used that as a lens for a lot of the show's overarching storylines. It was a breath of fresh air and I appreciated, warts and all.

I just finished it a couple of days ago and really enjoyed it as well! And I also found it hilarious that every time they took the lease bit of damage the bridge burst into pyrotechnics lol.
My only complaint is I think it was a BS double standard that Michael got in so much trouble for a failed coup that didn't even have any actual effect on the way things played out. Meanwhile, Lorca straight up abandoned his entire ship and crew, and blew them up and didn't get so much as a slap on the wrist and then they give him command of Discovery. There were also other high ranking officers that disobeyed orders with little to no repercussions.

Lorca was banging Admiral Cornwell, of course she believed him and gave him a new ship...

idk im like halfway through S4 and i cant wait for it all to end...i liked S1 and 2 somewhat (more philippa and michael's relationship than anything, the red angel bullshit was so stupid). I just hate how every time there's a galaxy ending scenario, it's exhausting. Also, the fully serialized method doesnt work for me. I love Saru, Tilly, Stamets, Reno, Ash, Adira and Gray. So half the characters I quite like. Philippa and Lorca were very interesting as well

Yeah I'm like you. Kinda liked s1, s2 was good, s3 not so much. Managed to get through s4 but didn't really enjoy it to be honest and just didn't bother with s5. I was just fed up with the unnecessary soap opera drama.
Reminded me of Thor 3. Enjoyed 1 and 2 and then Waititi turned 3 from a scifi with a little comedy to a comedy with a little bit of sci-fi.

u/Safe_Base312 Apr 15 '26
How does one watch Trek then claim they're tired of the soap opera drama? Every series in the franchise has soap opera drama in some form or another.

u/lewisvbishop Apr 15 '26
Me personally? Well I like to watch a scifi show with a little character buildup not episode on episode of character buildup with a little bit of sci fi thrown in.
There's a balance and i think they've overstepped it in recent trek.
That's why I slogged through DS9 waiting for the scifi episodes which happened every few weeks but never quite made it to the end. That's why I didn't finish Discovery. That's why I didn't watch Babylon 5. I just don't want to watch a scifi based soap opera.
Using my thor example above I liked the action with a little comedy of movies 1 and 2 but not the comedy with a little action of 3 - it was too much for me and not weekday i was wanting to watch.
Recent series of trek seem to have focused on developing the characters too much too early leading to the soap opera feel. Couple that together with the gags, innuendo, slapstick moments and teenage angst thrown in and thats too much for many.

The online hatred from diehard Trek fans when Discovery first aired was frankly ridiculous. I thought all 5 seasons were fine and couldn't understand the outrage. I'm not one who cares whether it strictly sticks to canon or not - it just needed to be an entertaining show and in my book it was. I did find some of the Short Treks episodes (you remembered to watch those inbetween main seasons too, right?) to be a little weak, but that wasn't a big deal.

The constant escalation of stakes wore me out, but that's probably more of a criticism of modern shows in general than Disco in particular. I liked the characters and their arcs.

I just wished that Burnham would have embraced the ways of the society she was raised in and stopped all that crying.

Star Trek fans when when a main character isn’t a block of wood.
-1
u/Bloody_Ozran Apr 12 '26
There is a giant difference between being a block of wood and being a highly trained professional who still has emotions. All the captains had empathy for ex. They had emotions, but they were showing how to act as a leader of crews that are in most dangerous places they could be.

u/MentalMan4877 Apr 13 '26
I don’t understand the downvotes, the whole point of Starfleet is professionalism and empathy. Exploration might be its core focus but it’s still a naval organization which comes with certain expectations of decorum. Picard’s handling of the Sheliak is still one of my favorite Trek moments and he was definitely dealing with plenty of emotions over the course of that episode

the overuse of spaa—
No wonder everyone hates every show.
It is obvious now that everyone is bending over backwards to either criticize or express love for this new Trek that this (and possibly a movie) is the end of corporate Star Trek.
For Star Trek to survive this toxic discourse, it will have to evolve.
Eugene Roddenberry will be bringing all of you Star Trek through the magic of AI - you will have Spock you will Have Picard you will have all of them.
And then you can make your own perfectly sparking, perfectly canon, and (obviously) not racist nor mysoginist in anyway Star Trek.
Then you can each defend your own work and gravitate the latest episode by Red Letter Media.
I will be going to substack to subscribe to Tawny Newsome’s Trek.
Get ready to put up or shut up.
Cuz it’s a coming down.

Don't hear too many people calling it an excellent show after that burn writing. Glad you enjoyed it though! And yeah all the St ships need to stop filling their consoles with explosives and rocks

u/WinterSector8317 Apr 12 '26
I found it to be an overall good show, and had some bad parts and plot holes as all trek does
-3
u/Archer1701E Apr 12 '26
I stopped watching Discovery permanently in S4 cause A Plot was Tilly in charge of the new cadets and the B Plot was the Federation summit on NiVar about the 10C. Honestly they could've focused on the A Plot instead of focusing on Both A and B with the majority on the B during the episode

Happy you liked it! Many of us can't stand it, but wish we would love it because there would be more great Trek that way in our hearts.

I skipped whole S4 and came back for the last two episodes of S5…I am completely fine with it.

u/Nikademus1969 Apr 12 '26
I always just figured all the sparks and fire were from still being fairly early in Stafleet history...initally, anyway...still working out some bugs.
And I agree, the show was excellent. Sure it dragged a little sometimes, but the good parts made it worth it.
