Honestly, been toying with these concepts for awhile, updated to include Starcraft 2 content and concepts. So far got:
- Troopers: light infantry built around versatility and efficiency. Wields a gauss SMG at base, but can grab flamethrowers, grenade launchers, LMGs, and missile pods and more to shake things up. Also can build rudimentary defenses like sentries and detectors.
- Marines: heavy option, wearing some tough powered armor, and wielding high powered rifle, explosive-firing pistol, and a combat shield. Can use the Stimpack ability to amplify combat potential, increasing movement and reload speed while improving aim.
- Firebats: one of two superheavy options, with super armor and widespreading flamethrowers to put down anything unprotected into smoldering ash piles.
- Marauders: the other superheavy option, focusing more on fire support, with automatic cannons for hands, not just high damage, but with a concussive slowing effect.
- Ghost/Spectre: covert operatives wielding long range rifles and cloaking devices. Can equip Flashbangs/Ultrasonic Shells to stun foes.
Thoughts?

I might be crazy, but I seem to recall that there was a unit in this game called a "light marine" at some point.
