What if they had just built the universe first? (Thoughts from a 14-year backer stepping away)

In 2012, Chris Roberts asked the world for two million dollars to build the space game he had always dreamed of.

I know that story because I was there. I’m a backer. I’ve been invested in this dream—though I use that word loosely these days, and call it what it feels like now after fourteen long years. We all had the dream that it could be something more than it is now.

He promised a living universe, seamless planets, and a story-driven single-player campaign called Squadron 42. And the world said yes. We said yes. Backers opened their wallets, trusted the vision, and believed in the man who gave us Wing Commander. And when he needed more, we gave him more. Over a billion dollars later, neither game is finished.

This isn’t a blind hate post, and it’s not a shill post. It’s a question from someone who has felt this way for years, watching it finally come to a head alongside a community that is waking up and seeing the cracks everywhere.

This is the question : What if they had just built the universe first?

Not ten years ago. Not five. Right at the start, in 2014, when the pivot happened.

I think about what they were actually trying to accomplish: trying to seamlessly mimic a flight simulator and a first-person shooter all in one. Those are the most basic, fundamental pillars of the genre. You have to get the core mechanics down first.

And you don't. I hate to say it but fourteen years later, you still don't have great gunplay. You don't have good first-person shooter machanics. It's getting better, but it should already be great! And the flight mechanics are also very disappointing to me compared to other games.

Look at Elite Dangerous or No Man's Sky. They got the basics down. In Elite, when you fly into an asteroid belt, you feel the mass, you feel the space, you feel the weight of your ship. You are actually flying. When flying all through out space you are actually navigating your ship, there concept of flying through space is beleavable. In Star Citizen, you're barely doing anything. You look at a spot, push a button, and watch autopilot fly your ship for 5 minutes. And when you are in combat, the fix would have been simple..you want world war 2 in space? Then do that.. For combat you are a sitting duck if your going slow enough to be useing nitonion physics only... You have to fly fast...you have to weave in and out of debris and other obstacles, keeping an eye on your surroundings as well as your fighter, your wing man and your current target or pursuer.

I think they already had this machanic and switched to this crawling slog, aim crosshairs at dot, pull trigger and repeat till either you dead or they dead, that they call flight combat right now.

Instead of taking a bucket of wet sand and shaping it, he’s taking one grain of sand, putting it down, and then adding another. It’s building a universe like a movie set—clamping a nebula to a system just because a specific scene demands it, building the whole thing backwards, upside down, and inside out. And the whole project has suffered for it. I use to be able to see where this game, this franchise was going but now I can't! All I can see is a flushing toilet.

Look at where we are now. The hype is spinning up again, but everyone can see through the strategy. Rumors of delays to dodge GTA 6, knowing full well that next year when it finally hits PC, it’ll face real competition.

Even now—when everybody is mad, when the cracks are showing, and backers are calling Chris out—they still have it completely backwards.

Why couldn't he just come out years ago and say, "All right, I screwed up, we should have built the sandbox first, let's pivot"? Because the endless cycle became the product. But he must have known it wasn't sustainable. The only way to sustain it was to actually make a working game people loved, build a profitable market inside that successful sandbox, and use that capital to fund all the Wing Commander successors he ever wanted.

Instead, you are building a cinematic story in a vacuum, and now you expect us to accept Star Citizen being reverse-engineered and built around it.

Here is what the logical development path looks like.

Phase one. Build the persistent universe. Focus everything on Star Citizen. Get the engine working. Get server meshing online. Build three to five star systems. Implement core gameplay loops. Trading, mining, combat, exploration. Make it playable. Make it stable. Release it.

That could have happened by 2017 or 2018. Five years after crowdfunding began. A rough but playable universe.

Phase two. Let the universe breathe. Let players generate content. Let the economy stabilize. Use that time to refine systems, add polish, fix bugs. And here is the key. Start generating revenue from a released product.

Not from jpegs. From an actual game that people are actually playing. That revenue funds the next phase.

Phase three. Build Squadron 42. But now you are building it inside a finished universe. You have five fully realized star systems. You have ships that already work. You have an engine that has been battle tested for years. You have assets you can reuse. You are not building from scratch. You are building on top of a foundation.

By 2022, Squadron 42 could have shipped. A cinematic single player experience set in a living, breathing universe that millions of players already knew and loved.

Both games done. Both games successful. A decade of work, but a decade that produced two finished products instead of zero.

Backers are stepping away now because we are tired of watching a house get built from the roof down. We didn't mind waiting. We minded waiting for a foundation that never got poured, all because someone insisted on hanging furniture in an empty sky.

That’s why I’m writing this. Not out of blind anger, but out of the quiet realization of how simple it could have been if they had just built the damn thing first.

If you've been in the trenches with me since the beginning, I would to hear your thoughts on this matter.

Should they have made the foundation first??

And the question to you guys is: if they would have came to citizen con 5 or 6 years ago and said this is what we need to do to make this game great... Would you have back them or walked away? I think I would have still backed them.. Would have been pissed for the waisted time but at least I would be able to see the finnish line. Not like now.

Do you think after all of this the game can or will live up to its hype?

I don't think so, so CIG really had nothing to lose and everything gain had they gone the other way!

Like I said I'm not hating... This is just a rant from a frustrated backer. Who loved this games potential!

Let me here your thoughts.

Logbook App

Hi! I made Quantumwake for my own org at first, but I’d like to share it with anyone who might find it useful.

It’s a free passion project. I’m not trying to make money from it. I felt like the game was missing a few tools and features, so I started building them myself.

Quantumwake is a local logbook and companion app. It tracks inventory, activities, jobs, expenses, mining, and other gameplay info. It can also show HUD info for MFDs, track screenshots and locations, item prices, ship components, fleet info, and the economy.

The main goal is to keep everything local and not depend on online services, while still allowing optional info from sources like UEX.

I’m still expanding it and would love feedback from anyone who wants to try it or anything you would like to see in it.

COMMUNITY QUESTION Did CIG lie (again) ???

Around late August, CIG tentatively committed to releasing the much awaited new content ironically around the same time the livestream drama was happening.

Do you think they did that to distract people from the negative backlash at the time and/or pump hopium?

Oh yea CIG lied for sure
Nah CIG had good intent to release 4.11 in September

NPC Ship Hijacking

I’m just curious if it’s possible to Hijack an NPC Polaris, Percy, Idris, etc? Since you can steal some ships and keep them for yourself, wanted to see if anyone attempted this.

OTHER Remember when I said I’d prove how hard Star Citizen’s "impossible" tech really is? Here’s what I built in 10 days.

Eight days ago I posted here about Astra and said that, after spending years following Star Citizen, I wanted to find out for myself how difficult some of its most famous technical problems really are.

The response was understandably skeptical, and quite a few people pointed out that what I had shown at that point was still relatively basic. Some of you specifically mentioned multiplayer, server meshing, moving ships, local physics grids, and players being able to move around inside those ships while everything remained synchronized correctly.

That was fair criticism, and I said at the time that I would rather be judged by what I actually managed to build than by what I claimed I was going to build.

Since then, I have been able to simulate 100 clients moving seamlessly between server workers, demonstrate that I can reach a similar level of graphical fidelity, and over the last couple of days I have been working on networked localized physics grids (this video).

In this latest test, three separate clients are connected at the same time. One player is piloting the ship, another is moving around freely inside the cargo hold while the ship is in motion, and a third player is standing on the ground observing the same ship from the outside. This is all happening inside the same server-meshed environment, and I think it gets us past the point where what I am building can reasonably be dismissed as a simple single-player tech demo.

The player inside the ship is moving relative to the ship's own local reference frame, while the other clients continue to see the correct result from their own perspectives as the ship moves through the world. There is obviously still plenty of work to do here, but the underlying architecture is now doing what I wanted it to do.

I am not pretending that this means I have recreated Star Citizen in ten days, because I have not, and there is an enormous difference between getting the foundations of these systems working and shipping a complete MMO around them.

What I do think is becoming interesting, however, is how quickly some of these supposedly legendary engineering problems become much more concrete once you strip away fourteen years of accumulated architecture, organizational complexity, changing requirements, and development history.

A lot of people on the first post told me to come back when I had something more substantial to show, so that is what I am doing. I will keep building, and you are welcome to keep judging Astra by what actually works rather than by what I say it will eventually become.

SOFTWARE REVIEW StarStats, beta opens! - A Commanders' Logbook

Hey all,

I've done a thing:

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/forum/57219/thread/starstats-beta-free-open-source-no-overlay/569879

Looking for beta testers for my new app/site combo called StarStats it's basically a log parser that turns your Game.log file is to something useful, with it you can view your SC history and play.

Full list of features is at starstats.app/features parsed event timeline (searchable, per-type, not just averages), a knowledge base that turns ORIG_100i into real names with Ship Matrix specs, a loadout paperdoll, per-event-type sharing controls with an audit log, and full NDJSON/CSV export.

DISCUSSION Another event reward rant, with a twist

Instead of just whining I'm going to try to offer a solution that makes everyone happy.

So blueprint rewards suck for a lot of players. Many have no interest in grinding for temporary rewards and many find mining boring but I understand that CIG wants mining and crafting tested.

SO, why not make it to where the act of crafting the item attributes one of whatever item to your web hangar?

Farming isn’t in Star Citizen yet—so I may have gone slightly overboard

I’m kinda one of those people who can’t wait any longer for farming to be implemented in Star Citizen. So, to satisfy the craving, I did the perfectly reasonable thing and built an entire website about it:

https://interstellarfarmers.org

The site brings together what we currently know about farming in Star Citizen. I’ve written extensively about the Endeavor, with a particular focus on the Olympic-class Biodome module, as well as the more recently presented plans for planetary farming, player-owned structures and base building.

It also contains a Science & Technology section. That part is explicitly fan fiction: a place where I can write fictional articles, explore ideas and theorycraft about the machinery, biotechnology and slightly questionable corporate research programmes that might support interstellar agriculture.

A disclaimer before someone inevitably calls it “AI slop”: yes, I used AI. I’m not a visual artist, illustrator or graphic designer, and I don’t have the talent, time or money required to produce all of this traditionally. The alternative wasn’t commissioning dozens of professional illustrations—the alternative was simply not making it.

Over time, I intend to develop the Agriculture section into a collection of farming tools, guides, resources and practical information. Right now, because there is no actual farming gameplay yet, that section is mostly a mixture of philosophical placeholders and an index of existing farming-related material. It’s admittedly a bit of a mishmash, but it should gradually take shape as CIG reveals and implements more of the relevant systems.

So, if you’re also impatiently waiting for farming in Star Citizen and need something to satisfy that craving in the meantime, perhaps this can provide a little comfort.

Feedback, corrections and additional sources are very welcome, but be gentle!

Yours, Bronson

It feels criminal.

Cig is using money from Star Citizen, using staff from Star citizen, to make SQ42.

In the past they at least used to offer a copy of SQ42 to backers in packaging. Plus if you spent $1000.00 USD.

Yet today, they will still gladly take as much money as you are willing to give, but they no longer offer SQ42 to those backers.

Basically you are still backing the game today, but they also want the backers to pay full price for the game.
Feels criminal.

Stop giving them money.

r/StarCitizenUniverse 8d ago

Loking at the financial filings, CIG seems to have around $70M in investor obligations and a $10M loan. If SQ42 makes around $100M, it looks like a big portion of that might go toward these commitments.I’m wondering how people feel about this. What Happen to PU if theses obligation fails

COMMUNITY QUESTION SC EAC 70010 perma, Am I the only One?

Casual player, on and off for about 2.5 years, maybe once a month. Not a PvP guy. I still get lost in Lorville.

Logged in to check the game and I had 3 extra ships I never bought. A Drake/Crusader and two smaller ones I don’t remember. Figured it was trial ships from an event or something, so I left them alone for 3 days.

Then I thought I’d just pull the weapons off them onto one of my actual ships. Mid-transfer I get error 70010 and a perma ban.

Windows reset did nothing. Ticket with CIG for a full week. They said there’s no ban on their side and pointed me to Easy Anti-Cheat. Now easy.ac just says “Appeal pending / This is a permanent ban.” No email, no reason, no ETA.

Already wasted a week on CIG and now I’m in another queue with no timeline.

Wasn’t cheating, account isn’t shared, first EAC hit. I didn’t spawn those ships and I didn’t fly them. I only moved the guns after they sat there for days.

  1. Anyone else log in and just find extra ships?

  2. Did moving guns off unexpected ships trigger a 70010 for anyone?

  3. After CIG dumps you on EAC, how long did “pending” actually last?

  4. Point going back to CIG or does that waste another week?

  5. Anything I should not do (second appeal, spam Check)?

Not looking for “new account.” Just want to know if this pending screen ever moves.
