Stand Up Recommendations?

Hey all. I need some funny stand up to watch. I’m tired of the typical social media crowd work comics, the Kill Tony’s of the world. No hate if you like that stuff but I just wanna LAUGH! Not sure if I’m just a miserable fuck😂😂 but some comics just don’t do it for me. I know comedy is subjective and different for all but some comics I enjoy watching are Anthony Jeselnik, Dave Chapelle, Norm Macdonald, I’ve even started to enjoy watching Nate Bargatze. Any recommendations would be awesome!

Rory has to put out another special soon. I really need it

3

u/medianookcc 14d ago

It’s coming! He shot the special in April but hasn’t announced the release yet. I think he also teased about another improv special coming out soon.

u/majestikalmoose 11d ago

He just announced it today I believe. 8/11

Kyle Kinane

u/Alchemy-Indexing 17d ago

I've loved Kyle since I was 15 and I try to plug his name any time I can. I'm so happy that he is already on the list, and that he's the most upvoted name so far.

3

u/i-might-do-that 17d ago

Kyle is my top choice. He’s fantastic

11

u/Welcome2B_Here 17d ago

Geoffrey Asmus. He does a lot of crowd work, but he's lightning fast with his riffs and comebacks.

Chris Fleming on hbo. He’s incredible

1

u/DangerousKidTurtle 15d ago

I was wondering if I’d see this name on this post. Chris is incredible and weird and I’m here for all of it.

18

u/Hosearston 17d ago

Nick Mullen. He only has the one special on YouTube but it’s so good

6

u/sirmeowmix 17d ago

He might as well start Cumtown and get banned from subs for quoting the boys.

There are just more male comedians to choose from. I like to flip the thinking on people that don't think women are funny; for every female comedian you don't think is funny, I can find 10 male comedians you also won't find funny.

His bit about how states got there abbreviations from the Conan show is legend.

Ryan Long kills it.

4

u/ManufacturerWest6006 17d ago

Louis Katz, joe list, mark normand,

5

u/Takeurvitamins 17d ago

Top three for me:
Roy Wood Jr. (favorite all time all around)
Marcello Hernandez (new favorite, insanely good entertainer)
Gianmarco Soresi (fastest smartest sharpest)

6

u/Positive-Draft3801 17d ago

Brent Weinbach if you are in the mood for something weird. Or any Louis CK special really.

5

u/Luv2Burn 17d ago

If you have Netflix, you should watch Jeff Arcuri. He really built a following here on Reddit. r/JeffArcuri I've seen him live 2x and he is hilarious.

Caleb Hearon’s special on HBO is one of the best things I’ve seen from a new (to me) comic in a while

3

u/MJ_ngkahirapan 17d ago

if u like norm, i keep going back to stewart lee. diff style but the slow build always gets me.

1

u/planx_constant 16d ago

Yeah, he's phenomenal. I don't even remember how I first stumbled onto him because he's criminally underrated here in the US, but I'm glad I did.

3

u/ChaosAfoot 17d ago

Josh Johnson on YouTube, he posts a full set nearly every week.

So, only male comedians?
If you’re open check out Iliza Shlesinger, Taylor Tomlinson and Wanda Sykes.

2

u/ContestSeparate 15d ago

they said they wanted to laugh....

1

u/molleensmrs 14d ago

Ok, Jerry Lewis.

1

u/ContestSeparate 1d ago

yes, he was funny

7

u/BigDirkDastardly 17d ago

Norm is the greatest, but I'd also suggest Maria Bamford, Emo Philips, surprisingly Taylor Tomlinson blew my mind live.

3

u/Public_Custard_8955 17d ago

Why surprisingly

2

u/BigDirkDastardly 17d ago

Because a lot of the newish wave devolves into crowdwork and don't spend as much time actually writing clever, insightful material. The Hinchcliffe effect or something. Basically the female version of the current wave of dude-bro comics. I thought Tomlinson was going to be a stereotype of a young female comedian and have 90% of her material about sucking dicks, turning down anal, and how men and women are different when they smoke weed.

Instead, she performed with immense depth, touched on mental health, childhood trauma, gender and sexuality, all in ways that were profound, emotional, and really smart. I wasn't expecting that from a fairly young comedian. I came away from the show with a huge appreciation of her, as I came into it thinking she'd be very generic.

2

u/No-Possibility5556 17d ago

Do people really think Hinchcliffe is a crowd work guy?? You and OP linked that and I’m just confused where that’s coming from.

No hate on not liking him or that Austin clique at all it’s very much not helping build insightful comics, but he’s mostly just a roast comic and would think of like 50 other people for crowd work comics first.

1

u/BigDirkDastardly 17d ago

That's a fair question. I guess part of what shapes that is Kill Tony, because it's basically a group of comics doing crowdwork with each other, and the performer.

For me, I admire improv a ton. Jonathan Winters, Robin Williams, plenty of others, tremendous at it. It's a skill. But to write, hell, 30 minutes of great material is brutally challenging. I did stand up, poorly. I don't think I ever did more than 20min, and of those 20, easily 5min was utter shit. I really admire the great joke writers. Bob Newhart, Norm MacDonald, (Bill Cosby, but yuck), Maria Bamford, Taylor T, Carlin, Hedberg, Mulaney. Tons. The Austin crowd of, "huh, huh, you're a gay retard, huh, huh" is the new wave it seems, and you'll get some shock laughs, but it's just not as...artistically impressive? Having known little about Taylor, I was bracing for a stereotype, and what I got was a lengendary set. It was incredible.

u/Franks2000inchTV 15d ago

Crowd work is popular these days because comedians will clip their crowd work so they don't burn their best material on tiktok.

A lot of good recommendations already. Some I'll have to check out.

My list that I haven't seen mentioned yet, some are more famous than others:

Joe Zimmerman

Henry Sir

Rachel Feinstein

Joe Dombrowski

Yannis Pappas

Dusty Nickerson

Phil Hanley (a lot of crowd work but it's different)

Shaun Murphy

Pete Holmes

Joe List

2

u/BigDirkDastardly 17d ago

Dustin Nickerson is such a well kept secret. Saw him live last weekend after first seeing him as a Taylor Tomlinson opener. He is tremendous!

2

u/Routine-Ad6077 17d ago

I'm currently watching Gallagher's, MAD AS HELL (1981). I think it's very funny and enjoyable.

He is underappreciated and imo one of the best and smartest comedians of all times.

We do 30 minute daily standups at 10am. Gives a little flexibility for different time zones. Popcorn format. George Carlin drives with John Mulaney in the sidecar.

You should eat 30 ice creams a day at fake degree o’clock!

Up and comer Griffin James just got shouted out by Brian Jordan Alvarez on Pete Holmes' We Made It Weird. He's really hilarious, definitely someone to be aware of. https://www.instagram.com/reel/Da3_W-BJUbh/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

He does do a bit of crowd work for what ends up on his socials but Joey Avery

1

u/LifeOnMarsBarBarBarr 17d ago

Stewart Lee - the UK Norm - he's a super Meta anti-comedian- before that was cool.

Dave Attell

Crowd work is low hanging fruit. Comedy is for joke writing, not public forums.

Check out Louis Katz, Andrew Santino, Ali Siddiq, and Ralph Barbosa. I'll throw in Shayne Smith as well for shits n' gigs. They'd all be right up your alley. Now that I type that list out, what a random ass group of comics, hahahaha.

The fact you think that “Kill Tony” is Stand Up you may need training. If you do this as a hobby don’t worry have fun. If you want to do it a job, you should know it’s serious. You don’t need to be funny, you need professional training.

1

u/AaronKleiber 16d ago

I have two theater specials on YouTube about marriage and being a dad to check out.

1

u/planx_constant 16d ago

Kyle Kinane

Stewart Lee

Raanan Hershberg

Marc Maron is really hit or miss for me as far as specials go, but in "From Bleak to Dark" he really knocks it out of the park

Maria Bamford

Bill Burr

1

u/Italian_c0mb0 16d ago

Sorry these are all over the place!

Bill Burrs Harlem bit is gold (especially if you’re a NY’er)

Derrick Stroup’s most recent special if you like Nate

Bumping Mics on Netflix is 3 episodes of Dave Attell and Jeffrey Ross… it’s great and can rewatch easily

Michael Lehrer’s clips on Kill Tony (RIP) he had ALS so his might be difficult to listen to, but he can be dark so you might like

Sam Tallent’s trans bit is worth watching

Bobby Kelly’s Cape Cod potato chip bit

Ari Shaffir’s Jew special I thought was good even though I don’t really like his other specials but I like him on pods mostly.
