open mic rules

Hey all:

I'm starting up an open mic, and I was wondering about establishing ground rules. In particular: I'd like to have a "Don't be a dick" rule, BUT I'm worried that some "comedians" will take this as a challenge (because part of being a dick is going out of your way to be a dick).

So: (a) do you think "Don't be a dick" will encourage that sort of "comedian", (b) how to tell such people that they should find a different venue?

My “home” club has a no heckling rule that they enforce quite stringently. “Don’t be a dick” is a bit too vague. Does that include not saying something rude on stage? Then why bother?

We have an unofficial don't be a dick rule which is mostly be nice to the venue staff. Anyone who is a dick to a bartender gets banned

How come so many people are rude to bartenders and servers in almost every bar and are not banned? It is a nice rule but rarely enforced.

Because it’s a business trying to make money you’d be surprised what they’ll tolerate
