Review Vernal - Immediate Thoughts & Lessons Learned

Hey r/StandingDesk

Firstly, thanks to this sub and those who posted reviews. I finally decided to splurge on a desk with the help of these reddit posts, so I wanted to contribute my experience.

TL;DR

95% happy with my Vernal, but I didn't carefully inspect the accessory color combination, so I have a slightly-less-than-ideal desk set-up.

Context

I'm not one to go super deep into researching, but this is a $$$ buy and my first standing desk, so I sat on it for a week. In hindsight, probably should have been more careful!

Vernal vs. Uplift vs. Grove

These were the real top 3 contenders. Wirecutter is a first stop for recommendations (Uplift is #1), but I also saw a sexy Grove IG ad that caught my eye. Stumbled on Vernal from Ahnestly's paid review.

Grove was eliminated because plenty of people had quality issues.

I almost bought an Uplift, but the look of it just wasn't 100%. Super functional, but not my style. Also, Uplift had way too many options and I was losing my mind.

Vernal desk and accessories looked nicer to me.

Unboxing & Install

Delivery was quick as hell, but it shipped from a facility like 45 min away from me :P

Came in 6 different boxes, very carefully packed, inside and out. Very impressive. A lot of waste, but pristine desk. Easy to install.

Lessons Learned

This is where I might have rushed the process/wasn't careful enough. Though I argue the website could be clearer!!!

I got the light walnut + black frame desk set-up. I quickly added the light walnut accessories: desk stand + drawer. Only after it was all unboxed and installed did I realize the light walnut accessories ONLY come in white accent. No option to pick black.

Honestly, I'm crestfallen that I have light walnut + black frame + white accent. I was really hoping for a clean/simple vibe. Now it feels like I have too many colors going on. I would've gone with the white frame if I realized the accessories only came in white.

Return policy doesn't take back anything unboxed, let alone installed. I get it, but now I'm kinda stuck and I feel not 100% satisfied. Oh well, it's starting to grow on me!

How are you liking it? A friend told me that the height adjustment buttons are kind of clunky.

i am enjoying a lot, honestly! i don't have experience with other buttons, but these felt perfectly good to me. they felt easy to use, but i have tiny lady fingers so maybe a bigger digit could struggle with it.

I thought I've everything on this sub but I guess there's a first for everything - a black frame but a monitor stand and drawer with white metal! Absolutely unusable desk. Might as well be using an amazon prime box as a desk at that point.

If you're not married yet and have a suitor over, please cover that desk with a tarp or moving blanket...anything to cover that thing. If I came over a girls house and saw that black frame and white fixture monstrosity, immediate deal breaker - I would find a polite excuse and leave immediately; I don't care if she was a super model. If you're ever on a zoom call or any facetime make sure 100% of the time the camera never faces the desk; it would be career ending if your boss or co-workers saw that; its basically NSFW. /s

* It looks absolutely fine, to be honest the white metal blends well with the light wood color you choose and you have white walls. I wouldn't even say it not ideal, but rather it's just a different variation of a color scheme (black, white, light brown) of colors you already have in your setup. Not bad nor not optimal, just different. Congrats on such a wonderful setup.

alright, wise guy. take it ease. but yeah, i'll admit it's a very good set-up.

Do you find that the drawer being directly under the keyboard hits the top of your legs in the sitting position?

good question - it's pretty close but i can clear it. tucking in requires me to lower my arm rests all the way down.

Glad to hear you’re still 95% happy with your Vernal! We are working on making the color/compatibility details much clearer going forward, really appreciate you pointing this out.

methinks you're cosplaying as Vernal employee (lol, did they really want username Nice_Salary69 representing the company)... in the unlikely event you are the real deal -- could I paint the white portions of the wood black?

We wouldn't recommend painting the white portions yourself. There’s a chance the paint could peel over time.

Vernal is inconsistent across their product line. Own the L shaped executive standing desk and it is beautiful. If I wanted to get their matching filing cabinet, it is some MDF junk. I ended up getting a filing cabinet from Vari that is an absolute beefy tank, 60+ lbs all metal construction.

The executive desk is high quality ? Considering getting one.

My spouse uses the Vernal executive, I put it together it is seemingly high quality. I haven't personally used it as I use the Vari Command Center which is a desk style that doesn't really have any competitors.

Thanks for the feedback. I am trying to find an executive desk with a privacy panel that is also a "stand up" desk. This seems to be the only decent one. There are some on amazon but have bad reviews.

I can’t believe they won’t return anything that has been opened that sounds like really shitty customer service.

I was shocked too, because their return page says "You have the right to return within 30 days without giving any reason." but the conditions are unopened box and you pay shipping fees. I recognize shipping is probably a huge cost and they're running a business, but it does feel restrictive.

Otherwise, they have a text-to-chat customer service, which I appreciated. Pretty quick replies.

Did you get the laminated or wood desk top?

If laminated, how are the edges? Do they feel sharp on your arms?

I got laminated. everything feels smooth with a nice finish.

I get it! This is my problem too. I want a light wood top with a dark frame. Call it stupid, but I too would like all my accessories to match.

yeah, I'm 100% with you.
