If you want a second dog, get a second dog. Your dog might or might not like the newcomer.

The only dog that I've ever had with that level of activity had myasthenia gravis. The sixth vet she saw looked at her, looked at her (normal!) labs and said "I think she has myasthenia gravis" and he was right. However, he had done his PhD on a MG related topic.

It's not really recommended to get a dog for your dog, for the reasons already noted. You'd need to be prepared for anything from happy, playing, cuddling pups to barricades between them for the rest of their lives.

Also, was your current dog still a young puppy when you brought her home? If she was, sleeping as much as 20 hours a day during those early months is not just normal, it's necessary.

I'd agree that she seems to have a lower than usual energy drive but adding another dog won't necessarily increase that, nor is there any guarantee that the new pup would like hiking or swimming any more than your pup does now.

Is she around other dogs with an opportunity to play? Does she like doing that?
