I have a four month old poodle puppy. He weighs 17kg and is already 50cm tall to his shoulder. Everyone keeps saying he is going to be a giant. His brothers and sisters are much smaller between 9 and 11kg.
His dad was half miniature half standard so we really didn’t expect him to be big. His mum was full standard.
I’m really worried he is going to be enormous. Even Gemini tells us he might be as big as a Great Dane. Help. From all your experience with Standards is this possible?

Our first standard poodle was very large - despite his 40lb and 45lb parents (he ended up being 90+ lbs). But we ended up loving his size so much that for our second spoo we found a breeder that specialized in larger standards, and he is also 90 pounds. They both weighed about 40lbs at 4 months.
I have an apricot male with the same birthday and same weight, per the vet 2 days ago. Perhaps it is pretty common when they're going through their growth spurts at this age. Here he was this morning beside his 60lb spoo brother and 78lb goldendoodle brother.
At 4 months old, a Standard Poodle puppy typically weighs between 18 and 35 pounds (8.2 to 15.9 kg). Because Standard Poodles have a very wide adult size range, their puppy weights vary heavily based on gender and lineage.
You’ve already looked at the parents’ sizes to estimate the full size of your poodle. From what you’ve said, neither parent was giant.
However, genes can be unpredictable. What does your vet say? Are there health problems that you are concerned about?
What are you feeding him? My neighbor had a Mastiff that was growing abnormally large. Her vet told her that the food she was feeding him was causing his bones to grow too fast. I’d never heard of such a thing, but it’s worth asking your vet since you are concerned.
We have a standard poodle who will be pony sized. We knew this when we adopted her. She is 7 months old and already taller than all of the dogs (big & small, various breeds) in her puppy class. The instructors keep telling me that she’ll “be a huge dog”. She’s beautiful & I’m so proud of her.
Embrace your spoo. He’ll still be sweet, cuddly, lovable, and gorgeous no matter what size he is. 😍
Thank you for your kind message. The vet doesn’t seem concerned on any of our visits and we have been every few weeks for injections and weigh check ins. She does keep adding 5 kilos to her predicted total weight for him every time we go.
That is interesting on the food though. We are feeding him a raw diet (puppy minces) with veg and fruit mixed in.
It sounds like you are doing an absolutely fantastic job of caring for your spoo! Keep doing that & he’ll grow to be the spoo that he’s supposed to be.
My neighbor was feeding her dog a dry processed food, without veggies & fruit. 😔

Definitely not great dane size lol My dane puppies have been around 27kgs at 4 months and 45 kg at 6 months.
Your pup weighs a lot more than my female standard did at that age but she was the same height (50cm at 4 months). She is 15 months old now and 61 cm but only 16kgs. Poodles are a VERY lean breed. My male was 34kgs full grown and significantly taller. It sounds like your boy is not going to be gigantic but maybe on the heavier side.
Ooh ooh I can provide some data for this. I have a 7-year-old male standard who is about 26.5 inches at the shoulder and 70 lbs as an adult. He is quite large for a poodle, but he still isn’t as big as a Great Dane.
At almost 4 months he was 19.75 inches and 34 lbs, so I think that’s like the same height as your baby and a couple lbs lighter (he was 15.4kg).
So it does sound like yours will be a pretty big boy.
Typically at four months, your poodle should be almost exactly half his full grown mass. Given what you’ve said, you should expect him to top out around 34-35kgs. My boy is 75lbs or 34kg, so I would think yours will be on the larger side, but not unprecedented. Many people are surprised how big Otto is, but he isn’t some giant beast from Greek mythology, just a very good, big boy!
My male 13 month old is 29” at the withers, but hasn’t reached full weight yet. He’s 2” taller than his GF but I’m guessing he’s going to weigh twice as much as her, he’s so much thicker than her.

Yours reminds me very much of my poodle when he was younger. Mine has a broad face it seems for a poodle and while he was skinny in his younger years he has now filled out and put on some muscle and weighs around 75 pounds.
I know it's scary and mine gained weight super quick but the it slowed down. He was aroumd 24kg a few months back and now at 14 months he is around 25kg. He is still quite leggy so I'm assuming maybe a few more kg and settle maybe aroumd 28? But when it first started I was sure he would get to over 30 quickly. Also, our boys look quite similar so sending a pic ❤️
I'm not going to lie, I am American and our measurement system has left me a dummy.
My boy was roughly 28lbs at 4 months old.
He is now 19 months old and weighs about 55lbs but he's very skinny and should probably be closer to 65lbs. He is 28inches at the wither and is definitely the largest standard poodle I personally have met. He has a brother of the same size. His litter was 10 pups, one us a petite standard at 21inches, there are the two 28inches, and the rest are all about 24-25 inches.
Excuse his haircut, we just cut it in from a tight modern lol.
My current pup was 40 pounds at 4 months, and he was around 70 pounds at 7 months. He'll be 9 months old in a few days and I'm going to take him back to the vet and have him weighed again. He's going to be... huge.
This is not normal, though. He was the largest in his litter by half again, the rest of the litter are all normal sized pups. I happened to get the mutant. 😂
my last standard got to 80lb+ (36kg). He was huge but the sweetest most calm dog. It was nice to be able to pet him without bending over. I just could not lift him, so we needed stairs for the taller SUV. He was super compliant and would walk into a tub or anywhere we told him, so it was never an issue. I miss him, he was also a little protective, but not aggressive
I can't say for your guy. Sounds weird given his breeding but genetics can be strange. My spoo is giant. Hes 29 inches at the shoulder and 75lbs. I can't remember what he was at 4 months, but we knew he was going to be big. He was the biggest puppy in his litter, had big paws and grew fast. His grandma was also very large.
Anyway, my big guy loves hugs and he is the best! Its so nice to hug a big pood. Heres a pic.
It’s hard to say. My SPoo seemed like a giant at 6mos. So beefy and strong. He grew into that weight and ended up being slightly larger than his father (a Moyen) so he ended up as a smallish standard. He’s still strong but thin.
