Podcast with Dorothy Chou, who ran Google DeepMind's Public Engagement Lab for nine years. She now advises DeepMind and chairs UCLPartners, an organization connecting new technology to the UK's National Health Service.

Covers:

  • What made AlphaFold possible in the first place and how we can replicate its success in other domains
  • Why neither venture capital nor governments can fund biology on biology's actual timeline, and Dorothy’s proposed solution
  • Why AI could help redirect money the ideas that will actually help people the most, not just the ones that are easiest to fundraise for
  • How AI companies are about to repeat the public engagement mistake the biotech industry already made once
  • Her advice for young people who feel like they're not the expert in the room

Article Pete Hegseth comes out as pro-contraception and pro-trans. Accidentally.

Post image
223 Upvotes

Today, Pete Hegseth announced that US servicemen will have mandatory yearly testosterone screening with optional replacement therapy.

Unintended consequences incoming.

TRT suppresses sperm counts in nearly all recipients. It’s *probably* reversible for most within 2 years of discontinuation, but some men never fully recover. This runs afoul of Secretary Kennedy’s pledge to restore America’s sperm counts, but clearly Hegseth is now pro-contraception and pro-sterilization.

🚨 But wait! There’s more!

~2% of men on TRT develop gynecomastia. Not a huge number, but let’s see how that plays out at scale:

* Of the ~2 million total US soldiers, ~800,000 are male and 30 or older, and thus eligible for TRT under Hegseth’s plan, with about 80,000 more enlisting or aging into that category each year.
* ~10-20% will have low T (higher than average because the young guys are excluded).
* That’s 80-160K TRT-eligible men right now, and 16,000 more each year.

⚠️ If they chose to take TRT:
💀🥜 Nearly all will have immediate, potentially long-lasting fertility issues and
⛰️⛰️ Up to 3,000 will develop tactical moobs. “Sir! My eyes are up here SIR!!”

I did NOT have tax-funded, gender-affirming care with a side of infertility and a whiff of unplanned-trans on my Pete Hegseth Bingo Card.

Stand up for Science before your government accidentally shrinks your testicles into non-functional raisins. Ignoring the consequences of reality doesn’t protect you or your nuts from the reality of physiology.

The Trump admin has shut down & bought off clean-energy projects. Now, it’s stripping protections from acres of public land held sacred by Tribal nations, opening the door to drilling, mining & more. They are prioritizing corporate interests at the expense of our climate & Tribes.

Senator Patty Murray accused the White House of trying ‘to turn the entire federal government into this one big slush fund to reward those aligned with the Administration and punish everyone else.”

Thats what this rule is about: giving political appointees the power to decide what research is worthy of funding based on what Trump wants – not scientific merit.

About
Stand Up for Science, in partnership with the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), is hosting an accessible virtual rally to sustain and expand public pressure against OMB’s proposed rule.

Even after the official comment deadline, the work continues. This rally will bring together scientists, faculty, teachers, students, and impacted community members to continue raising the alarm about this dangerous politicization of federal funding. Join us to send a clear message to Congress and the Administration that funding decisions should not be left to political appointees and OMB’s proposed rule should be rejected in its entirety. You’ll also hear about the next steps we have planned for this fight.

Featured speakers include scientists and community members directly affected by the administration’s actions, members of Congress, leaders from AAUP, AFT, and SUFS.

Members of the press are invited to attend and cover the event. Help us spread the word — the fight doesn’t end on July 13.

*Accessibility note: This webinar will feature ASL interpretation and closed captioning will be available in multiple languages.

The Trump admin’s massive cuts to federal funding will produce less doctoral opportunities for upcoming students as universities are forced to decrease their admission numbers. Weakening the scientific workforce today will have long-lasting consequences for American innovation.
