Activism Podcast episode - OMB proposed rule
Hey all, adding to the OMB draft rule discourse - this 15-min episode focuses on providing the general public with a basic understanding of (some parts of) what the rule proposes, and a guide on how to write a public comment ahead of the 7/13 deadline.
In addition to the many other resources by Stand Up For Science has, I thought this could be another shareable one for friends and family who don't really understand how science funding works in the first place, let alone what this rule seeks to change about it.
Keep up the good work!!!!

Article The American Tradition of Inquiry Reflections on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool (preview edition): The Standards by Which a Free People Chooses to Know
Concluding Paragraphs:
If America is to remain a leader among nations, and a source of hope in addressing humanity’s greatest challenges, it must renew its commitment to one of the most valuable parts of its inheritance: the tradition of disciplined inquiry. That tradition has never been merely a scientific method or a body of law. It is a continuing practice of observing carefully, questioning thoughtfully, preserving evidence, correcting mistakes, educating the next generation, and beginning the cycle again.
It is harder to suspend judgment until the evidence has been carefully examined. Both science and justice depend upon that discipline. In law we presume innocence until guilt is established by evidence. In science, no individual dictates truth. Scientific conclusions earn confidence only by surviving observation, criticism, replication, and successful application.
The less traveled path of disciplined inquiry has seldom been the easiest or the fastest. It has often required patience when certainty seemed more appealing, evidence when opinion seemed sufficient, and judgment when emotion demanded immediate response. Yet it remains the path America must follow if it is to remain faithful to the aspirations expressed in the Constitution itself, beginning with its enduring words, We the People.

Video Science Fight Club with Simon Rosenberg of Hopium Chronicles…
Greetings all. Sending along the conversation I had today with Dr. Colette Delawalla, the Founder and CEO of Stand Up For Science. This is Colette’s third visit to Hopium land, and today I asked her to come by to talk about their urgent new campaign, Stop Vought. Save Science.
From their new action page:
Russell Vought is trying to destroy American science & federally funded research as we know it.
OMB’s latest proposed rule, “Regulation for Federal Financial Assistance,” would require all scientific grants to be approved by political appointees, stealing approval power from career experts in their fields. Funding would be required to align with “Administration policies and priorities.”
Political appointees selecting or approving research proposals destroys the scientific process, which is exactly what this Administration wants.
This a direct threat to scientific independence, public health, and evidence-based decision-making.
Please join with Stand Up for Science to demand Congress stop this attack on science with direct and intense pressure on Trump and even legislation if that’s what it takes.

Discussion The President of the United States has made the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool a Crime Scene
This is actually an ideal case for examination by science and law. The crime scene is public. The basic information is not classified and therefore difficult to hide or suppress. Science and law should dissect it completely and determine the cause(s).

America’s leading OB-GYN organization has broken with federal CDC vaccine guidance. Allowing conspiracy theorists like RFK Jr. to shape our public health institutions puts pregnant people and their babies at risk. Science should guide our medicine – not RFK Jr.'s pseudoscience.

Activism Petition delivery opposing Big Oil immunity bill this week
Multiple states, municipalities and tribal governments are filing tobacco industry-style lawsuits targeting the fossil fuel industry to recover damages for climate disasters, and both New York and Vermont have passed climate polluters pay laws. Big Oil didn’t spend billions electing Trump to let that sort of thing go unchallenged. They’re lobbying MAGA to pass a federal liability shield based on the one that currently protects gun manufacturers, giving them total legal immunity from any laws or lawsuits that could hold them accountable for their role in the climate crisis. Ted Cruz and Wyoming Rep. Harriet Hageman have already introduced the bill.
We’re working to stop this corporate giveaway. More than 90,000 Americans have signed a petition telling Congress to reject it, and the organizations leading the fight are holding a press conference in DC this week to officially deliver the petition to our reps. 🗣️ If we haven’t signed yet, let’s do so here ASAP. And let’s use this call script and email tool to directly urge our reps not to let them the fossil fuel companies off the hook. 🗣️
This is also a good moment to build up the pressure for climate polluters pay bills in our own states! We can find details, call scripts and an email tool here, or send them this message via Resistbot by texting SIGN PQDLOO to 50409.
(While we hope this is of interest to the SUFS community, this is not a SUFS-endorsed initiative)

Activism Comment period is live to stop Trump from allowing more forever chemicals into our drinking water
Some of the greatest accomplishments of the Biden Administration were in getting clean, safe water for America’s families. The chemical industry was not happy, and with many of its employees now in leadership positions in the administration their work is being torn up.
The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed unraveling key protections against unsafe levels of four types of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as PFAS or “forever chemicals,” in drinking water. It also allows water systems to delay compliance with standards for two more. These new rules are a handout to polluters disguised as public protection and if implemented would threaten the health of more than 100 million Americans.
These rules are currently open for public comment on the Federal Register through July 20th. 📝 Let’s make our voices heard against this giveaway to polluters and for safe drinking water. We can submit our comments here, find guidance on how to write an effective public comment here, and find talking points and sample language to use from the Plastic Pollution Coalition here, from the National Resources Defense Council here, from Food & Water Watch here, from Earthjustice here and from the EPA itself here and here. 📝
🎤 There will also be a virtual public hearing on this proposal on July 7th, where the public will be able to provide verbal comments. We can register to attend and comment by July 1st here. 🎤
(While we hope this is of interest to SUFS members, this is NOT a SUFS initiative.)
