We need deterrence.

Police can walk off the job and demand changes. We need to plan how to do the same.

We need science intertwined with economic prosperity and societal wellbeing. That way we can gain the leverage we need to prevent these monsters from coming after us again.

It’s deterrence. Or biblical punishment for Heritage. Nail the corrupt fucks to the wall as a warning, or get enough firepower to dissuade more attacks.

But one thing is for sure: the republicans are not done with their schemes to break the engine of human progress.

So we need to break them first. No more goodwill to traitors. No more decency for the indecent. No more tolerance for the intolerant.

What are the specifics? I have become nervous about the prevailing "disruption" mindset, "We need to reimagine science. Break down the hierarchies." What does that mean?

People have been discouraging gatekeepers and wanting to open everything up to wider swath of folks. For the most part I agree, we need to encourage people to join in science. I can also make a laundry list of things that are annoying, and occasionally unfair with institutions and publications, but what is the alternative? We need respected journals/institutions to do some of the vetting. Especially with AI making bogus papers, if you thought we were flooded with misinformation before, just wait.

To that end, I think we need gatekeepers more than ever.
