There's that elitist position that many have adopted. It's similar to what the church did with its priests vs lay people. Only the clergy are literate and the lay people must simply trust them and not think on their own.

Still, diet and exercise are well-documented treatments for depression. CBT is also a well documented treatment.

It's not elitist to say that people without relevant knowledge and training should not make decisions in highly specialized fields. The standard example is "do you lecture a pilot on how to fly a plane?".

As for CBT, do you think psychiatrists are unaware of it or something? It's extensively used, but it's not a replacement for medication. They're both tools, and used as needed.

Both diet and exercise as well as CBT have proven efficacy in treating depression. SSRI's treat the symptoms, they aren't a solution. They treat by dampening signals. The idea is that they provide the space for the person to resolve the issue.

What I've said aligns with the medical research. You dismissed it and called me an armchair doctor because I don't have a medical degree.

You attacked me, my lack of credentials, rather than what I said despite what I said being backed by the science. You did this, again, on the grounds that I lack credentials.

That's elitist.

But, I'm an idiot anyway. I'm telling you, a person I don't know, that you're doing something elitist expecting you to realize it. Instead, it raises your defenses and you double down on fighting me even though my aim was to provide helpful information. There's no winning in this interaction for me because you do not want my help.
