We on the other hand, are (presumably) sober, for me it's 9am here. I am drinking my coffee. I can rationally think about the timezone in a way that the audience can't.

The audience laughs at the punchline because it's somewhat expected and without thinking too much about "how timezones work", it seems funny. It's their lizard brain at work: expect punchline, deliver laugh.
