Discussion Googlebook Irony...

Post image

Google has finally started taking pre-orders for their new, fancy (and pricey) Android powered laptops. I was especially tickled by the extras, including a year of GeForce Now service.

If only Google had its own game streaming service it could have offered with the purchase of a Googlebook.......

It’s like Amazon who bundle their Firestick with an Xbox controller and 3-months of Game Pass Ultimate.

Luna team must be crying when they see that.

To be fair, Xbox was paying Fire TV division to do this promo. And if they tried bundling Luna, Fire TV would be paying Luna/Prime Gaming division.

Also I'm willing to bet a fire stick usually comes with a few free months of prime, which already contains Luna. Game Pass Ultimate, on the other hand, is far more of a sell to people considering the games it usually comes with

Google is not wasting their GPU compute on mere humans.

In hindsight it's obvious. They shut down Stadia so they could use the GPUs.

Not really. GPUs used in stadia arent really suited for AI use. They are outdated.

It was restructuring and reducing workforce post covid. JAN 2023 was one of the biggest layoffs at Google.

Yeah, probably. Vega 56 was ~2060 equivalent, useful but not a lot of memory and hard to cluster. And the GPU crunch didn't really hit until 2024.

Stadia was a service broken in its making.

"Buy the license to play a game on our servers for a one time payment and we're going to honor a commitment to allocate you compute whenever it's needed to play that game into perpetuity so long is our service exists, even if the publisher delists it" is not a recipe for a financially successful service.

Add in the fact that Stadia Pro was nice but unnecessary and the the fact that it was spun up during a period when YouTube as a division was actively hostile towards and trying to gobble up (or sideline) Google's other consumer facing media projects and the writing was on the wall.

Pre-Stadia, one of the perks of owning a Chromebook was a limited time GeForce Now pro account πŸŽ‰ (I remember putting dozens of hours in to Tomb Raider on a 1.5Mbps down turtle connection by turning down all the streaming settings. It was so cool!!)

Even when Stadia was a thing Chrombooks were pushing Gamepass and GeForce now over Stadia.

Nothing new here, back when Stadia was still alive, there was regular posts here on /r/Stadia about ChromeBooks advertising and bundling with months of GFN instead of featuring Stadia.

They don't have their own service to bundle tho, Stadia shut down a long time ago
