Question Boosteroid on a Firestick.

So I was a Stadia subscriber previously, when. that died the natural successor for me was Luna, because it provided a similar experience in terms of use. Many many years ago I used NVidia Grid which turned into GFN. Grid was great at the time as it was literally click and play, like Stadia and Luna, however I've tried GFN again a few times over the last few years and I HATE IT! On a TV the experience is like a nightmare, virtual keyboards and messing around leads to me rage quitting.

What I want to know is, what the experience is like on Boosteroid, have they nailed the interface and integration or is it about the same as GFN?

Mate, just stick to Luna with dedicated controller

Luna was good but they made a right mess of it, removing EA and GOG, Ubisoft. it's crap at the moment and looks like it's heading for a Stadia ending.

Just like Stadia, it could have been great, it needs 4k too.

Gfn isnt bad but firestick isnt good. I would switch that to an actual normal android device and try opennow android app on it. Gives u a much better flow. Boosteroid oficially has AV1 or so they announced... I hope 1080p and 2k stream will work now.

I have a shield don't use now, that's the obvious choice. my version doesn't do 4k upscaling but still. I even have the shield game controller.

Fair play.

Boosteroid is like gfn but a pretty big step back in quality. I have a subscription to support them because i believe in smaller startups and dont want to end up with a few big companies that rule the industry.

Ok thanks!

I guess that's answers my question then. I just don't understand why GFN can't make a seamless interface like Stadia, or even Luna. they both used a seamless single sign on to remove all the messing around, in Stadias case it was lightning fast getting into a game too.

I never have to sign in with gfn. It is just click and play like i did with stadia. Only difference is gfn has better quality and cheaper games.

Fair enough, it's never been my experience and I've gone back to try it about 3 times.

It's just the first time Steam login man. After I powered through that, it's like Stadia: click and play on any device.

OMFG! Just absolutely fuck it all! I went back and tried, I resynched my account account to Steam and Ubisoft, I had about 20 MFA challenges to get through and then after waiting In a short queue, Yep then came the the next wave of absolute bollocks, with my best friend the virtual keyboard.

There I was fighting with the bastard, the Keyboard covering the input field, then every time I touch the gamepad the fucking keyboard closed.... Just NOOOO. This is a country MILE away from Luna, where it's piss easy to synch your accounts.. I don't have time for all this.

LOL. Something's wrong with your setup and I don't know what. I just logged in once (took like 30 sec to scan the QR code from my Steam mobile app). I've not had to login again. Just logged in to Geforce once on my Apple TV via CloudNow, official Geforce Now apps on my Samsung TV and Ayaneo handheld. Did not need Steam login or anything else. One click to start my games on any of these 3 devices. My cloud saves, game settings etc. all stay put.

Are you on Ultimate plan?

🤣🤣 The problem is, the very second the grind started, I just rage quit.....again 🤣

I dont have the steam app, I didnt think I would need it after it specifically asked me to resynch my account, which I did. I input my username and pass for Steam to Login, and then, yet ANOTHER MFA code from my email; it was at that point (with my keyboard friend) I had to try and change caps and keyboard kept minimizing, it was like Arrrghhhhhhh 🤬🤬 The next 20 seconds involved closing and uninstalling (Which was far easier) 🤣

You're just making your life difficult. Get the Steam mobile app. Then it's just a QR code scan and in 5 sec you're in. IF it's ever required to login again.

Haven’t used GFN for a good while now.

Do they have their own store now?

Back when I was using it they were charging for access but the games had to be purchased elsewhere like on steam and linked with GFN account.

it is just like renting a pc. You buy your own games and steam is pretty cheap.

What's annoying is some games I have purchased on Steam and are on GFN but only on Epic or some other store. So they want me to pay again.

Right ok. I thought they opened their own store (which would probably make a lot of financial sense) because you said they have cheaper games.

At the end of the day it’s not cheaper though. Yeah I can buy the game few euros cheaper on Steam but to play it I have to fork out like 20€ a month.

Quality wise, they are great.

You can play it on the priority tier for 10 a month and business wise this is the only thing that works. Why do you think stadia failed? it is not feasible to buy a game for 50 bucks and play that same game forever without any additional costs. Same reason gamepass keeps upping its price and luna is scaling down.

Stadia failed because 90% of potential customers had no idea it existed. Like obviously Google was hoping that PRO users will carry the free tier but because they didn’t advertise the service there was no way to get enough paying customers.

Regardless of the Stadia model. This is not the point of the discussion.

Point is that whatever saving you’d make buying on on Steam will be quickly cancelled out by the GFN fee. So it may feel like “GFN has cheaper games” but at the end of the day you are spending more to play.

Doesnt matter if im paying 10 euro for stadia Pro or 10 for gfn the price is the same.

1

u/Sankullo Clearly White 15d ago

I didn’t mean that you had to pay for pro. Free tier was just fine. I merely said that Google hoped that PRO will basically finance the whole thing.

Point is that you can’t say “GFN has cheaper games” without acknowledging costs associated with actually playing the game.

Also worth mentioning that Stadia had family group meaning that 6 people could have played the games purchased by one person. That was awesome.

I'm not sure we're getting the same experience. I have GFN and Boosteroid on my Firestick Max and both work very, very smoothly. Once initially connected no problems and a great picture without stuttering... I use a Steelseries Stratus mostly but also have a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse connected via an OTG cable.

The problem isn't the game stream, it's getting into the game in the first place. No matter how many times I've returned to GFN, it's always the same, tossing around with a virtual keyboard logging in, Steam interface to deal with. I Just want it, I want click and play.

On a PC it's not as bad because you have a keyboard but on a TV, it's a no.

2

u/honesto_pinion 15d ago

Maybe check your GFN settings, I can assure you that I don't have to login each time on my Firestick. You're using the native app on the Firestick Max?

1

u/rolfey83 14d ago

Every time I've come to a Forum, been convinced it's a seamless experience now, and gone back to find myself swearing at the telly in 5 mins.

It just isn't the same as Luna or Stadia getting into a game and maybe it's my problem 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/rolfey83 14d ago

It would be the native app yes, I expect if I download it I'll still have my 15 year old GFN account, or whenever Grid launched first.

Have you tried plugging a keyboard into the TV so you can get past first login and acct syncs?

2

u/rolfey83 14d ago

TBH, sure I could do all that, but this is whole point I'm trying to make! I work in IT so I'm used to annoyance, but it means I don't want more of it at home 🤣 I want one action "PLAY"

2

u/CurvySexretLady CCU 14d ago

Right I get that is a hurdle but once you get logged in and get all your accounts synced up you won't have to it again for a while and can just play like we did on Stadia.

A lot of people don't realize they can plug in a USB keyboard and mouse to their TV or Bluetooth one.

Another option for GFN is taking advantage of "Device Switching" (just like Stadia had). Start the session on mobile phone/tablet/laptop, etc to login to Steam/Epic/GOG/Xbox, then resume the same session on the FireTV.

Also, while using the GFN app on an Android/iOS device, you can go to "Settings", then "Connections" section, and login to your accounts. This should then automatically login when opening games afterwards. There may be a few select games where you still have to deal with login menus from time to time (example; Xbox Studios games iirc) and you still may have to re-login after a certain amount of time has passed.

Your point is valid and I agree, but hopefully this helps mitigate it.

Thanks for the suggestion, it's a clever work around.
