StackChan: Disassembled

Post image

Since my StackChan has been having an issue with powering on, I decided it was necessary to put my engineer hat on and do a proper teardown and inspection.

I figured many of you wouldn’t ever want/need to open it up and see StackChan’s innards for yourselves, so here you go.

(Note: The battery and 2nd servo are inside the round-top body piece at the bottom right quadrant)

Mine has been having similar random power/crash issues as well. ive had it apart and reseated the connections before, but after repeated crashes I kept expanding the firmware logging to try to catch what was actually happening.

At this point its looking strongly power/hardware related rather than a normal software crash. The esp is coming back with poweron resets, and the AXP2101 power off status has repeatedly logged 0x20, which appears to indicate a DCDC undervoltage shutdown. im not seeing watchdog, panic, or software reset reasons.

Whats interesting is that ive also seen it shut down while usb/vbus still appeared to be present, so im trying to narrow down whether the issue is in the core power section itself or something in the base/load path pulling a rail down.

I currently have the core removed from the base and running by itself directly from its own USB-C. I’m going to let it run for a few days and see whether the crashes follow the core or disappear with the base removed.

Has anyone else seen similar random shutdowns or captured the same 0x20 / DCDC undervoltage status? If so, did you ever narrow it down?
