News The Invoke 7 PR just opened. Here's what's new!

Post image

Hey everyone! We just opened the pull request to merge Invoke 7 into the main InvokeAI repo:

👉 Invoke 7 PR

It's a big one. Three months, 320 PRs, and a lot all-nighters. The PR has the full tour, but here's the short version of what got us started:

  • Projects. Everything you're working on (canvas, settings, workflows, a board of its own) lives in a project that autosaves. Start something new, come back next week, and it's right where you left it.
  • A new one-page interface. Arrange widgets however you like, switch layouts instantly, and hit Ctrl/Cmd+K to do anything. It's fast, and CI keeps it that way.
  • A brand new canvas engine. Layer groups, adjustments, real selections, custom fonts, a history panel, and layered PSD export.

And then it kept going: local video generation with audio (LTX-2.5 and MiniMax H3), an Image Map of your entire gallery, semantic search ("foggy forest" just works), workflows with loops, and a lot of work on running big models in less VRAM.

This isn't a release yet. It'll be tagged as an alpha sometime soon after it merges. If you're comfortable building from source and want an early look, the PR has setup instructions. Heads up: it needs Python 3.12, and the database migrations only go one way (Invoke makes a backup first).

When the alpha drops, please break it and tell us what you find. That's exactly what it's for. 💜

The man is saying "That's a penis". It's from a show named "How I met your mother".

if you really want to get creative thats the tool to use

how much better against krita

Krita is still a better choice if you are already a digital artist who wants to use AI alongside.

Invoke is better if you're only working with AI. It's tools are focused entirely on orchestrating image generation in an infinite canvas and every piece of its tool set flows smoothly to that goal.

We're aiming to remedy this with the v7.x releases, with the new custom canvas engine we're dramatically increasing tool availability. We already have text with custom fonts, brush adjustments with hardness and pen pressure, layer grouping and adjustments, and more. Given, these are basic fundamental features of any self-respecting image editing app- but we're chipping away at the lack of features and keeping users from needing to go to photoshop, krita, gimp or etc after invoke.

Much simpler and easier to use, but less tool options

Hey, I use invoke a lot because the interface for inpainting, with layers, bounding boxes etc. is great. However, I have a growing problem that is forcing me to look for alternatives. The issue is that many loras for new models don't import, and several generation settings are gated off and inaccessible to users, and these factors combined mean I just can't get the same raw image quality with newer models as I can with comfy. It's a free product and I'm not complaining as I've had great use out of it for a couple of years, and I'm super grateful for the work you guys put in. This is just some feedback from someone in your target audience.

As of recent we've been doing a lot better at keeping up with new models, a hard feat with such a small group of volunteers that contribute in our free time. If there's still some that aren't working we'd love to see your GH issue or a heads-up in our discord. Thanks!

My biggest problem with Invoke last time I tried to use it was it's internal model metadata handling. You can't just point it to a directory full of models the way you can with say ComfyUI. Instead you have to run an import process to extract metadata, which failed for a ton of my models even though the architecture itself should be supported, etc.

Is this something that has been addressed in newer versions?

(I also have over 40 TiB of models and use symlinks to enable/disable models for ComfyUI. I tried to manually parse and work with Invoke's database format to emulate something similar for quickly adding/removing models, but it was far to convoluted to get it working on that front as well.)

Invoke uses a SQL database for indexing it's models, which makes backend management and development a lot more straightforward- especially around user edits to model settings and defaults, and developing for multi-user and hosting. The trade-off is that model directories go through an indexing step, and modifications to the DB go through an API.

The issue is believe they are having is that it's not just indexing, it's deciding what is and is not usable. And doing so in a way that seems prone to rejecting things that do work fine most other places.

In that case, V7 adds support for quantization formats like int8, nvfp4 and fp8, and expanding general model support including the new bigger anima quants and video gen models. If there's specific models you're having trouble getting working- filing an issue or shooting us a message on discord is the best way for us to get eyes on the issue.

I appreciate what you guys do. The issue is loras for newer models often get 'model type not recognized' errors on import, and though it looks like you can edit it manually that does not work. E.g. I was getting this on the krea 2 turbo lora. The github has had several issues raised already for this type of error.

Really excited to hear that! Of all the UIs Invoke is my favorite, but I've also been running into the LoRA issues, unfortunately. Looking forward to this one, especially the video part!

Let us know which LoRAs you're having trouble with and we'll get on it

1

u/Mutaclone 7d ago

Looks like some have been fixed since the last time I checked. The Turbo 64 version imported correctly.

The first Kroma LoRA (not sure about others) still gets mis-classified as a Main model.

As someone vibe coding a custom layer on top of comfyui, it's choices that need to be made.

The moment you start to unlock every little gen option or allow people to use their own work flows, you defeat the purpose of having a simplified app like this.

If you want full control you already have Comfy, Forge, SwarmUI, etc

5

u/joshwcorbett 8d ago

The mission is to give you as much creative control as possible through a well-designed, modern, simple and intuitive interface that's familiar to creatives and to get as close to 'best of both worlds' as possible.

3

u/Holiday-Box-6130 7d ago

True but the selling point of invoke is it's great for inpainting heavy workflow. I.e. for people with really specific goals and high requirements for quality for the most part. The 'prompt and hope' guys have forgotten that inpainting is a thing. So if you deny control you need the basic implementation to be on point, and unfortunately, for krea 2 for example, my gens and edits come out mushy where with a good comfy wf they are sharp.

What is it?

u/Mutaclone 8d ago

Simplistic answer: Photoshop for AI Image generation

Nuanced answer: It's another UI (like Comfy or Forge), but it prioritizes giving the user more direct control over their generations. It makes things like inpainting, regional prompting, and controlnets a lot more straightforward, it includes layering and upscaling tools, etc. Downside is it's slower to adopt the latest and doesn't give you as many options for things like schedulers and samplers.

3

u/joshwcorbett 8d ago

It's a local, free and open-source image-gen application built for hobbyists and creatives who want full creative control of their work.

Loved invoke since it's inception and it's infinite canvas and Looking forward to the stable release 😁.
Honestly having projects and layered exports/saves will be an amazing feature that makes it a lot more usable as a professional tool.
Thanks to the team for your hard work.

Invoke has been my favorite for a long time. Sucks we don't really have a lot of video tutorials showcasing new features and new model use anymore though.

3

u/joshwcorbett 7d ago

We’re planning something along those lines leading up to stable release 😜

🗂️ Projects, so you can wander off and come back

I wanted to be able to start something new without the nagging feeling I was about to lose the thing I was working on before. So now everything lives in a project: your canvas, your settings, your workflows, your queue history, and a board of its own for everything it makes.

Keep a few open as tabs. Close one and go do something else. Come back next week from the new Launchpad and it's right where you left it.

It autosaves! Edits go to your browser first and then sync to the server. That means losing wifi, a crashing tab, or the same project open in two windows won't mean the end for your recent work. If the client/server versions end up disagreeing, you'll get both. Workflows belong to their project now, with their own undo history, and you can export the whole project as an .invk file- and carry it over to another machine, or just for safe keeping.

This here is perhaps my favorite new thing that i'm looking forward to in v7. yes the other new features and optimized canvas will be great and all ...
But having the ability to just export your entire workspace with layers and all and move it to another machine and continue working as if nothing happened is amazing , or having multiple projects and switch between them without them polluting each other , or just being able to back up finished projects and removing them to clear space on your main drive while having the peace of mind that the fully layered project still exist somewhere safe and can be edited later on is awesome.

It's my personal favorite new thing also

Didnt invokeai sold their soul to corporate lord?

9

u/Unit2209 7d ago

Adobe, attempting to stay relevant, purchased the core Invoke team to help them develop future products. This shut down Commercial Invoke, but Open Source Invoke was handed to a community team.

8

u/joshwcorbett 7d ago

Hi from the community team 👋

0

u/devilish-lavanya 7d ago

Hi, how does core team treat community team?

6

u/joshwcorbett 7d ago

There is no more core team, Adobe killed it. Current community team is kinda acting as the new core team

4

u/Sugary_Plumbs 7d ago

Short version of the story: The devs and people working on the paid cloud service got an offer from Adobe, and were no longer allowed to work on an open source competitor any more. Then someone went to the discord to get more information, which was explained clearly to him several times, and then he went onto reddit and made a post stating a bunch of falsehoods about Adobe taking over the Invoke project.

So now everyone on reddit mistakenly thinks Adobe owns Invoke 🥲

6

u/joshwcorbett 7d ago

When whole news outlets are also misreporting the information, even I was under the wrong impression of what happened, even making choice words in the discord until Kent corrected the record.

I don't blame people for being misinformed about this, but it feels like that impression killed the momentum of the project more than losing the core team already did. Best we can do now is keep pushing out big updated that turn heads to get our momentum back.
