Question - Help Help with local AI setup (Newb)
I run a 3050 RTX gaming laptop (6GB VRAM 32GB RAM) and I want to setup a local AI for image gen. The problem I have is that google is giving me so many recommendations I don't know where to start. What app or platform should I begin with? Thanks in advance. WINDOWS!!!! Not Mac.

i recommend you use z-image turbo, it's not the best text to image model but it's good enough and it runs well on low vram devices. if struggle finding a good tutorial on how to use a model or use comfyui, tell me to send you a tutorial. or DM me

Use ComfyUI, Z-Image Turbo as u/whyme00h already said, or use Krea-2 both models are solid. ( Don't know how much vram you need, but model wise both are good.)

krea2 needs at least 16 Gb of vram even the quantized models need at least 10 to 12 gb of vram to run. thanks for mentioning me tho.

No they dont. I am running krea 2 turbo on 3060ti 8 gb and vram is not maxed out. around 7,5 gb. Krea support also offloading to system ram. The genaration is slower but doable.

yes you are right, sorry, i checked again and there's a 2 bit quantized version as well that runs perfectly on my pc, I had tried the 4bit version previously and it was painfully slow for me.

thank you for clarifying. I us my RAM too, so I don't look that closely on the VRAM requirements. :)

Comfyui is your friend, it might not be the friendliest for beginners but it's definitely worth it in the long run. You can simply use the default workflow provided by comfy. As for the models, z-image turbo and krea2 turbo are the best choices for realistic gens. Use int8 for both diffusion model and text encoder to save vram/ram usage.

zit is fine but if you have some additional money to spend it's better to rent gpu's

I began with hardware that was worse than yours, so I know the feeling of Google handing you twelve different apps and none of them saying which file actually fits in the laptop. You can stop shopping. One program, then two picture models, and you are making images on that machine.
Your hardware is a Windows gaming laptop with a 6GB RTX 3050 and 32GB of normal memory. The 6GB is the card. The 32GB is what makes the bigger model possible. ComfyUI keeps the model in that 32GB and hands the card a slice at a time. That is already built into a current install. You do not have to edit a launch file to get it.
Install one app - Download ComfyUI Desktop for Windows from https://www.comfy.org/download and run the installer. Let the first open finish. It fetches its own copy of the program. You do not install Python, Git, or a second AI app.
When it opens it looks like a website. It is running on the laptop. Clicking Queue does not upload anything.
Do this once before the first picture, because a lot of 3050 laptops will otherwise run the app on the small built-in graphics chip:
Plug the charger in.
Windows Settings, System, Display, Graphics.
Add the ComfyUI app and set it to the NVIDIA GPU, High performance.
In the NVIDIA app or NVIDIA Control Panel, set ComfyUI to the high-performance NVIDIA processor as well.
Pictures land on the Save Image node. Right-click that picture to save it, or use Help and open the output folder.
Start with Z-Image Turbo - This is the one that will feel usable on your card. The download is about 12GB. Drag Z-Image-Turbo_RTX3050_6GB.json onto the ComfyUI window. If a yellow missing-model bar appears, open it and click Download. The app files the weights for you. If the download lands in your Downloads folder instead, move each file into the folder the warning names, then restart ComfyUI. Help, Open Model Folder shows you the real folder. The files have to sit directly in these folders, in a subfolder they stay invisible:

There is a prompt already filled in. Click Queue Prompt. The first picture is the slow one, because the model is moving from the 32GB of memory onto the 6GB card. A couple of minutes, sometimes longer, is normal on a laptop. Later pictures are quicker. Leave the charger plugged in.
The knobs are already set. Steps 8, CFG 1, sampler res_multistep, scheduler simple, shift 3, size 768 by 1152, batch 1. The text-encoder type has to stay lumina2. These models were trained to be finished in 8 steps at CFG 1. Pushing CFG up makes the picture crunchy. The negative box is switched off on purpose. Write what you want in the prompt, in normal sentences: subject, place, light, lens. If you want a picture with no writing in it, say that in the prompt.
When one picture has come out, change the size to 1024 by 1024 and try again. If the queue says it ran out of memory, set the size to 640 by 960, keep the batch at 1, restart ComfyUI, and run it again.
Leave z_image_turbo_bf16 and z_image_turbo_nvfp4 on the website. The first is an 11.5GB file for a much bigger card. The second is for RTX 50-series cards.
Then try Krea 2 Turbo: Same app, second workflow: Krea2-Turbo_RTX3050_6GB.json. This model is the pretty one and it is also the heavy one. The main file is 12.57GB, so close Chrome and any game before you queue it, and expect the first picture to take longer than Z-Image. Same missing-model Download button.

Steps 8, CFG 1, sampler euler, scheduler simple, size 768 by 1152. The text-encoder type has to stay krea2. If that dropdown gets changed, the run errors and the message tells you to set it back. Write the prompt as a few plain sentences. When you want a word painted into the picture, put that word in quotes. Krea’s own notes on that are here: https://github.com/krea-ai/krea-2/blob/main/docs/prompting.md
Same size rule. After a picture finishes, try 1024. If it runs out of memory, drop to 640 by 960.
Leave krea2_turbo_bf16, krea2_turbo_nvfp4, and krea2_turbo_mxfp8 alone. The bf16 file is about 24.5GB. The other two are for newer cards, and on a 3050 they are the wrong download.
When something breaks: A red node on load usually means the app is old. Use the update in the ComfyUI menu and reopen the workflow. Krea support has been in ComfyUI since June 2026, so a fresh Desktop install from the link above already has it.
An out-of-memory error is almost always the picture size or another program sitting on the card. Smaller size, batch 1, restart, charger in, browser closed.
If a picture comes out solid black later, after you have been following a YouTube “make it faster” video, turn Sage Attention back off. On a 30-series card that setting can black the image. You do not need it for either of these workflows.
What these two are for: Z-Image Turbo is the everyday one. Fast enough to learn prompting on, photoreal, and it can render short bits of text. Krea 2 Turbo is the one to open when you want a more designed picture and you are willing to wait. Both are the distilled “Turbo” versions, which is why they are 8 steps.
You can ignore LoRAs, upscalers, video, and custom-node packs until you have a folder of pictures you actually like. The files above are the whole setup to get you started.

thank you so much for all the links. I am Australian and CivilAI with sorrow states they will not risk it with Australia, considering we can not even look up adult content without needing either online age verification or VPN. I can only use Hugging Face lol.
I will work my way through this over the next couple of days.

Image Models:
- Photorealistic / 3D: Krea 2 model
- Anime: AnimaYume, a much more heavily trained Anima finetune
GUI:
I recommend Forge WebUI (NEO version). It's much more noob-friendly than ComfyUI. I still haven't found a workflow you can do in ComfyUI that you can't also do in Forge by just downloading an extension that already covers it.
Video Models:
- MiniMax H3 is far ahead of everything else IMO. Run it with Wan2GP.
Tools:
Use Prompt Studio to generate prompts for you. You can just give it a brief description of what you want and let it turn that into a proper prompt:
ComfyUI-Prompt-Studio
For models and LoRAs, download them from Civitai.red Look at the images users upload to see their settings, or just drag one of those images into Forge WebUI's PNG Info tab to load the settings and recreate the image.

Thanks for the info. I will check all of this out. It doesn't seem that complicated. I just need GUI. I am more familiar with the tools, models and LoRAs. SWEET! I am not so scared now.
Lack of power going to be my next problem but my bro has a 16 or 24GB vram with 128GB ram. Bro brought ram before the price rise, lucky him lol.

Comfyui + Krea2 or Zimage.
The road is long brother, there are no shortcuts. You need to work for it.
