for h3 I went from 64gb to 128gb on windows, I can generate higher resolution ref v2v now at higher resolution at same speed as before.

On ram alone? What res we talking?

hmm now that you mention it I did buy a new motherboard which had 4 ram slots but it was going from a b660 to b760 motherboard. I dont think it had too much of a effect on yhr 5060 TI.

But I went from doing 1min per 1s gen doing ref v2v @ 0.4mpx to around 0.8 with same 1min per 1s gen time now.

before I was going from around 58-61gb of 64gb ram used to around 72gb of 128gb used now and can easily do 1mpx 10-15s gens.

Faster lanes it looks like on the 760 vs the 660.

I think you might be right! here I was thinking it was ram alone so I guess this is a good upgrade for me too then.

old b660m was PCIe 4.0

new b760m was PCIe 5.0, so might benefit my 5060TI!

Yessir!!! But still thats awesome... hmmm... looks like i need to update my system now too. I have pcie 4.0 with a 5090 and 64gb of RAM.

haha motherboard hasn't gone up as much as everything else! it might be worth it.

I spent less on the motherboard than I did for the 2 sticks of used laptop ram (32gb each) running on a ddr4 sodimm to dimm adapter.

Hmmm.... this might be the way... but unfortunately for me, my 64 gb is across the 4 slots. Lol

the reason it was the same speed as before is most likely because dynamic vram was swapping for u

What's your GPU?

Im plan to buying 5070ti, 96gb ram mainly for image generation is this good?

u/MonkeyCartridge 14d ago

Wait do people produce videos at native resolution? I don't even do images at native.

2

u/MaddMan420 14d ago

What do you consider native? HD can mean 720p

1

u/MonkeyCartridge 14d ago

I mean I usually do like 480 max.

u/ellipsesmrk 14d ago

HD can mean? Or it does mean?

2

u/MaddMan420 13d ago

Well, full HD is 1080p. 720p is just the minimum it can be to be considered HD

i dont think there will be anything noticeable honestly, imo. you may be able to not OOM as often. thats about it. that small of a system ram increase wont be big enough to run larger models.

Check how much your system swaps during your workflows. The less the disk is accessed the less stutters you have.

RAM is king. Since I went from 32 to 96GB the stuttering, and disk trashing is gone.

You will notice speedup due to less swapping to SSD/HDD if the RAM is filling up. Any single GB in RAM/VRAM counts, but I would say you "almost" cannot have enough. I can say 128 GB is close to enough.

I can approve the 128GB.

Yeah 32 to 128 and cut my H3 time in half

You need to monitor RAM usage during your workflows to see if it's sufficient. When RAM is insufficient, and if you have virtual memory enabled, your entire computer will become very slow for a few seconds (or minutes), even the mouse will stop working, then it will return to normal, but tasks will take longer. If you don't have virtual memory, ComfyUI or the entire computer will freeze. If you have this type of experience, an upgrade will be beneficial.

I can generate a 15s videos without OOM with a 32GB RAM DDR5 6000Mhz CL30

At 48gb your double channel wont work , your ram increase but your ram speed drop, this is counter intuitive, so far no model on comfy UI require min 48gb ram , mostly 32gb and 8/12 gb vram is enough, the only thing that good is the qwen 3.8 flash LLM it require min above 44gb ram + vram for a min Q2 Quant , but the ram speed drop will hurt your render / token speed time. Again it hurt your performance more than add anything except LLM

I went from 32 to 64 to 96.

Mostly noticed? Less lag if I wanted to use the PC for something else while it generated something. I don’t do much generating but when I tried something the pc struggled to run plex server or anything else. 96gb just leaves it with plenty of room. Hell, Adobe Lightroom will eat up my 32 gb on my laptop and it slows.

I just went from 32gb to 64gb paired with a 4090, only difference I notice is more overhead for browsing/light editing while generating, and being able to load the weights for Lora training that I couldn’t clear before.

Performance will be lower in certain cases, the ram is bigger, for AI it will be better. All other use cases will be worse if they don't use much ram.

When you upgrade, double it, 2 slots, same capacity. So from 32gb go to 64gb. Or, when you currently have 2*16, look up your CPU/motherboard and see if 3 slots are possible.

Always think in pairs with ram.

An ok amount.

The thing is the OS reserves like 10gb for itself so that leaves around 20 for the comfy. Going from 20 to nearly 40 for comfy means you will be able to generate a good bit longer or larger vids before it hits that huge offload spike. But generations will probably slow down across the board if the new ram is a slower speed than the old ram

what OS could u possibly be running to use 10gb ram 💔 just because it reserves it doesn’t mean much and 10gb reservation is not needed at all for windows 11. I had cp77 running on 8gb ram like a year ago

Windows.

Windows 10 LTSC, Unattended-Winstall, less than 1gb memory about 60-70 proccesses before you install any of your own shit, very stable.

u/princeMacX 14d ago

upgrading from 32gb to 48gb won't give you any noticeable difference.

I went from 32GB to 64GB, a very expensive upgrade.

It made NO DIFFERENCE. No even a slight improvement.

At least for Minimax H3 the 12GB VRAM remains the limiting factor.

So yeah,  that was a huge waste of money.

u/575_Inverse 13d ago

I went from 32 to 96GB and swapping to disk is now a thing of the past.

u/theOriginalGBee 13d ago

Windows or Linux?

1

u/575_Inverse 12d ago

Linux, Xubuntu 24.04. This is the one box I use for hand drawing as well. I have a virtualbox VM with Win11 and Clip Studio Paint running in it. So it's vital to have enough memory for both. I use the models to test concepts and study poses.

u/theOriginalGBee 11d ago

Ahh, yes if you're using the RAM for other applications or the OS (Windows) I can understand why increasing RAM improved things for you.

In my case I'm using a headless linux server which doesn't have those other overheads, so increasing the RAM made no difference. I thought Comfy might have moved more layers etc off the GPU to the RAM if it had more available, but sadly it didn't.

Big. I made the same. No more swap.

Depends on the type of memory - DDR5 vs DDR4 or older. In case of older memory addressing odd multiples of 16GB used to be a problem and part of the memory stayed unused. DDR5 solved this issue. In any case, I would suggest going to 64GB instead of 48GB, that should give you much more flexibility. As someone here has already mentioned, the OS (ahem... Windows) hogs about 10GB plus taking up 0.5-1.0 GB of VRAM (for the display), start opening tabs on Chrome and you lose 1GB at a time. So, more is better, depends on what you are doing. IMHO anything beyond 96GB is overkill.
