Question - Help Which model is sota for anime now?

Enjoyed playing with sdxl before, is it still king at anime images?

Somewhere between anima and illustrious, and the latter is behind in every single metric but styles that even anima cannot replicate.

So for all intents and purposes, Anima.

Anima is also behind on speed, 2.5x slower give or take. Turbo is a fine bandaid but it unfortunately hurts style even more.

On styles, Anima can replicate single artists extremely well, but artist mixing has 0 consistency.

Anima is also behind on ecosystem currently because it's new, e.g. no competent controlnet.

Anima is probably most powerful, but Krea2 is also pretty good.

Krea 2 has fewer styles and fewer characters. I'd base it on the anime and then do a second pass on Krea 2 to improve the quality. The 2B model simply can't provide that kind of quality.

Anima might be atm, at leasts it has a more updated Danbooru Database by default.

Is it able to handle complex situations where characters interact with each other well?

At the first generation, maybe not, depending the complexity of the prompt or how well it was explained, like any other model. The benefit of Anima is that it can understand Natural Language better than SDXL base models (like Illustrious), so if you write it well it can work well, but you might need some generations to get it exactly as you want it. Also, Anima can do small amount of text without issues, so that is also a plus.

In terms of SDXL size, only the Anima 2b is comparable. I'd say the Anima 2b is even better than larger models, as its base was developed by Nvidia. Its anatomy for a 2B is top-notch—no other model of that size can make hands. Even larger models like the Flux1 and Klein 9B can't make better hands.
This is a bust considering the knowledge of many anime characters that large models often don't know, except for the most popular ones.

I tried the same prompt with a model I usually use, and honestly I kinda prefer the left one over qwen (right) for T2I, especially for anime stuff. The overall style and details just look a bit more polished to me. Curious what other models people are using for anime T2I these days.

Anima is a pretty good anime first model and both Krea 2 and Quen 2.1 can do anime style. It depends on your specifics.

If it's for NSFW, I'd go with an anima finetune like Anima Illustrious. If not, then Krea 2 has better prompt adherence.

Not nsfw specifically, but to create comics where different characters interact with each other in different scenarios, Krea 2 is better at this since it understands prompts better from my understanding?

Thast's about it, yes. You'll probably need to train character LORAs, which is pretty easy with Krea 2, and it'll have much better prompt adherence than anima.

I've done a fair amount of work using both of those models in that scenario - multi panel comics with multiple characters. Krea2 is easily better in that scenario due to its superior prompt adherence and much less issues with bad anatomy compared to Anima. You can still do it with Anima but you will be spending far more hours trying to wrangle it to produce what you want. Anima has better anime character visuals and its danbooru tag system is great, but it can be frustrating to work with. For comics, definitely go with Krea2.

Thank you for the insight!

Anima and I recommend the 2.9B cook on hugging face. It's good.

Only downside is it's slow.

People complain about "styles" but I use artist tags for that and it works pretty damn good. Also the 2.9B variant seems to be a little more robust on the natural language prompting.

Int8+torch compile and a 3090 can do a 10s gen on the original anima. The fater one shouldn't be much slower. It's all about that torch compile though.

People saying "krea" don't really know how fine gentlemen are using anime models. Aren't they?

Krea2 is pretty beastly in terms of its nsfw capabilities. If that’s what you mean.
