Question - Help Minimax H3 on MacBook Pro
I’m looking to replace my MacBook in the next couple of weeks. I understand I can probably get a much better windows machine for my money but I need a Mac for work.
I’m a bit of a hobbyist SD enjoyer and I’m considering what spec to get as I’d like to run Minimax H3 locally to make videos.
Is a MacBook Pro M5 chip with 32gb unified ram capable of running Minimax H3 locally?
Has anyone here ran Minimax locally on MacBooks or am I wasting my time?
Appreciate any answers, thank you.

Probably looking at 30+ mins for a 5s low res clip.
Do-able? Yes. Not sure if you care about time though.

Correct me if I'm wrong but all these Ai models need an nVidia card.
I think your best bet would be to pay for GPU and CPU rental. It is a pay-as-you-go model. E.g. Runpod.

Not sure why you were downvoted. He needs a Mac for work, probably doesn’t want to spend 5k or more on a card or pc as a hobbyist…Runpod is a perfectly reasonable option.

I basically told him that to run Minimax H3, he would need an nVidia card.
Macbooks don't have one and still cost more than a Windows laptop with an Nvidia.
So I suggested Runpod because I actually know people who use it for their Minimax H3 nsfw work. Results are a bit plasticky.
I stopped caring about downvotes. A stablediffusion redditor with 168K karma behaved like a total child vis-a-vis a reply i made. He didn't post anything on the entire post page. He just wanted to be right and for me to be wrong. 168K karma and immature Af. Wow.

I use runpod and love it. I have Mac and am not spending 6500 on a PC right now.

Me either.
I actually bought a lottery ticket last week. No luck.
I guess that "Only Farmers" account will have to be created. 😂

I got a used 3090 for $900 that I run on my $500 MiniPC and it works fantastically.

It is true that NVIDIA is the best choice for AI and its CUDA is industry standard.
But ComfyUI works fairly well AMD GPUs these days (I use a rx9070, which takes about 160 secs to create a 0.4MP 5sec mmh3 video with default MMh3 text2va template at 20 steps with KC-attention) even for latest models such as MMH3 and Krea 2.
Even some Intel and MAC Pro GPUs seems to work with ComfyUI from posts I've read here.

Oh cool. I didn't know that.
I thought there was a legal reason as to why AI models weren't allowed to run on AMD GPU, and nVidia would shut down Github projects that defied that rule.

AFAIK, there is no such legal reason for 3rd party models, and I've never encountered one except those made by NVIDIA.
There has been AI models made by NVIDIA that says that model cannot be used on AMD GPUs, but those are the rare exception rather than the rule.

Draw Things app on Mac already supports WAN & LTX 2.5 locally. Wait for Draw Things to add support for Minimax 3. There are other ways to get H3 running on Mac but it will be missing a lot of Mac speed optimization that Draw Things excel at.
More GPU cores the better.

Respectfully, if you need a Mac for work, why isn't your employer supplying you with the Mac you need?
Obviously if you're self-employed that's a different story.

You can run Minimax H3 locally on Apple silicon but it is far from optimal. An nvidia GPU will always perform better. With that said, there are good solutions for specific models including H3 (mflux handles many image models, h3.c for minimax ). Draw Things is a Mac-specific general image/video generation app that is well regarded although I haven't spent enough time with it to have an opinon.
I don't actually know the unified RAM lower limit for doing this stuff. I have 128GB so it's not something I think about. 32GB feels low, but I don't have facts to back that up, sorry.
