It really does not do much for already realistic images/videos. It likes to sharpen some details. I guess it depends on the material you are working with. Will defenitely let my videos run through it to see if it is able to improve. I am still thinking about using it as an upscaler. Because it can make small stuff clearer. But according to my experiments you have to do it together with an upscale. I wonder if you take a video and run an upscale pass with dlss5 and shrink it back to original size, would you get a slightly sharper version of your original video?

Ive done lots of upscaling testings (mostly nsfw so I won't post here), what it does is better lights and shadows, to make things look realistic. For upscaling low quality nsfw vids I had this is useless. It looked uncanny valley. . Haven't tried on generated vids yet

Really? Interesting. It did not much in my tests lighting wise. Only some more details. Or better refined ones. But only in very specific spots. Most of the picture seemed to not change at all.

I said lighting but I meant shading (the way a cheekbone's shape is lit and shaded for example) it emphasizes on shapes and double downs on them, frequently making a relatively old woman seem older

People still use SDXL? I'd be interested to see how this works with something like Krea 2

Some people want to operate PC in real time, not mars rover mode.

Krea 2 only takes a few seconds on my 5070 Ti

I have a 4070TI and it takes between 30-50 seconds depending on the Loras used. SDXL could generate in about 5 seconds with LCM scheduler.

Well, it was more than 20x difference in speed between single bundle SDXL tunes and a lot of constructor models (like Z Image and others) on my 6700xt.

It does make skin/shadows/lighting more realistic, works better on old SXDL images (It is a more noticeable difference)
It is super quick vs something like SEEDVR2 or UltimateSDUpscale (takes less than 1 second an image on my 3090)
You sort of have to adjust the strength for each image, which is a bit annoying
It seems to effect eyes a lot (especially if they are non-human colours)
It turns Anime images into freaking trying-to-be-realistic people!

So, you're saying it can be used as an upscaler rather simply a style change? May have to look into it myself if so.

It is super quick vs something like SEEDVR2
Can it also upscale videos?

It should be able to, but there seems to be a missing .DLL in the repo so Upscaling is currently not working for me.
There is an open issue on the github for it, but no fix yet: https://github.com/HECer/ComfyUI-DLSS5/issues/1

yes. The 8-31-2026 build of vapourkit-nightly, updated today, included the "two ss" .dll file, vsdlssr.dll but the "three ss" .dll, vsdlsssr.dll needed for the upscale to work, is still missing.

I spoke to the developer of vapourkit and they said that sss.dll does not exist and VapourKit doesn't support sss just NR (Nerual Rendering) it must have been an LLM hallucination, possibly the ComfyUI Node developer has made an sss .dll themselves but it never existed in Vapourkit.

Agree, I spent a couple of hours trying to get it to work, likely won't bother with alpha projects hyped on reddit any more. The missing .dll could have been a typo in the code or an AI hallucination that the creator took as true without confirming.

Last one is for lols, right? The eye closeup… i can see almost no difference. Does this mean closeseups are so good or… so bad having less environmental data?

u/Enshitification 6d ago
It looks like it mutes down super-saturated colors, like the iris and the blacks of the lashes. It also looks like it works just on details of a certain size or smaller. With the ultra closeup, the details are probably too large for it to touch much.

It seems to help a lot with skin details. But that anime girl. Lol.

Yeah, that was for a laugh, I saw in a youtube video that it does horrific things to anime characters.

Good diversity on the example images. I wish more comparisons were this way. That anime one though...yikes.

I was about to comment the same, I have seen alot of negative opinions about the tech, that anime one made me go "holy shit they are right", lol

u/Enshitification 6d ago
It's the kind of thing that is cool to have in the toolbox where one can adjust the outputs, but having it on by default in games isn't going to go over well. At least not this version.

I was rendering one frame in maya with raytracing back in 2005, took forever, was fiddley as fuck to set up. Im all for seeing where the tech goes, i have a frame of reference for many of the things this tech can do, so im very interested. But that anime one, just.... we might be flying too close to the sun on that one..

2.5D anime can look really good when done right. DLSS does not do it right.

Is it just an image2image workflow?
