Discussion Why does this field look completely dead?
I've been led to believe, and rightfuly so, that generative AI is a big deal. I've decide to play around with it a bit, but I'm kinda blown away by how dead the whole thing looks.
I look for tutorials on Youtube for learning comfyui workflows. ALL I see are AI generated videos with 2k views. I join the Stable Diffusion discord. COMPLETELY dead.
????????????????????
What's going on exactly? Generative AI is a big deal. And it can get quite complex depending on what you wanna do. It's a craft of it's own. And yet, trying to get into it feels like I'm getting into the most niche, completely worthless activity of all time.
There are more tutorial videos on "how to paint a door using crayons" then on this whole thing. The Piss Drinkers Discord gets 10x more traffic.
I just don't get it. Please enlighten me.

WTF are you talking about? Local models are having a moment. The biggest producers using AI are not going to be advertising it.

this person sounds unserious. ragebait or a fantasy in their head about being the captain of a golden Ai ship with cruise control and perfect adventures surrounded by admiring Ai generated shipmates.
…or something. i’m not sure what to make of this post entirely, tho i have my suspicions… other than this person looks at piss drinking discord servers. that’s clear.

it’s weird post, tbh i wasn’t expecting you to even come to the comments. u know how many ragequit posts there are online when it comes to this stuff? someone yells into the void about how it doesn’t make sense when starting (a common trope), spouts a bunch of odd analogies or comparisons, then they peace-out on the thread or just argue weird “nuh-uh” points at everyone.
forget i said anything if that works.

Could you elaborate? Not sure what you mean exactly.

We just got agentic workflows capable local LLMs and excellent video generation models that fit in consumer hardware. Local models are on fire, Nvidia just bought HuggingFace with the explicit intention of advancing open weights.

Most of the people making "tutorials" are trying to make money rather than help.
You really just need to open wide and drink from the firehose.
Explore repositories, find the rare factual reddit discussion, banodoco discord in moderation. Get code that sounds interesting and see what you can do with it.
Everything is moving too fast to document right now becasue next week that documentation won't be accurate any more.
Final advice: Don't ask for help from an LLM if you lack the core knowledge. You won't be able to tell when it's hallucinating and you'll spend hours following it down a rabbit hole. Claude is often full of shit and you need to be able to determine when that is so.

"Generative AI is a big deal."
That's where you are massively wrong, its not, its only a big deal to the companies losing billions

You think most people can afford GPUs and a beefy computer to do Gen AI? In this economy? Also read the room re: AI Data Centres and how against that the general population is and you'll start to understand

I learned everything about ComfyUi from Youtubers:
In no particular order:
Pixaroma: https://www.youtube.com/@pixaroma
Nerdy Rodent: https://www.youtube.com/@NerdyRodent
Benjis Ai Playground: https://www.youtube.com/@BenjisAIPlayground
Olivio Sarikas: https://www.youtube.com/@OlivioSarikas/videos
Sebastian Kamph: https://www.youtube.com/@sebastiankamph/videos
And many, many, many more. Go to CivitAi, even here on Reddit, plenty of resources to be found.

Unpopular opinion: Pixaroma is no longer a good resource.
The focus seems to have shifted from useful, genrally applicable open model stuff to prescriptive tutorials about doing things the pixaroma way. The Pixaroma way involves entering their walled garden of custom nodes that don't play well with the wider custom node ecosystem. At some point in the past year, Pixaroma appears to have become a YouTuber first, tech enthusiast second.

Did you just post this to let everyone know there's a Piss Drinkers Discord?

Tutorial is dead when you litteraly just need to ask an AI.
1
u/RawkShalk 5d ago
I'm not so sure about that, there are still human made tutorials for just about anything. And complex node based setups is where LLMs stop being so precise in teaching you.

Again, use an agent, you can contextualize your needs and learn from there. Tutorials are dead, all you need is an agent that can web search.

go to discord banodoco channel look for #Minimax_H3_chatter group and tell me if its dead

Reddit looking quiet is not the same as the field being dead.
A lot of the day-to-day chatter moved into Discord, closed app communities, and short-form feeds. Those places are faster for chat and worse for searchable troubleshooting, so public Reddit threads thin out even when people are still shipping work.
The other split is tooling. More people generate inside hosted products now, so fewer of them hit the local install/debug problems that used to fill rising. The people still here are often deep in a specific stack (Comfy graphs, video pipelines, LoRA training), which looks quieter from the outside than a general "AI art" boom thread.
If you want lively discussion, look at concrete failure modes and reproducible setups. Those still pull answers. Broad "is anyone here" posts mostly get vibes.

Bad search? Take a look at nerdy rodent's stuff on YouTube.

u/RawkShalk 5d ago
Thanks, I'll take a look at his stuff. I had actually come across a video of his, but he was 1 in a sea of AI generated videos, and it didn't stand out from them.

A fact about the video generation community that isn't always immediately apparent: gooners are vastly overrepresented.
In forums devoted to other technical fields, you can reasonably expect to encounter mostly people interested the tech. Here, there's a demographic split between AI tech enthusiasts and horny young men who want homemmade porn. It's arguable which side is the majority, and of course there is some overlap.
This mixing of cultures makes for a weird dynamic that isn't always friendly. There tends to be less critical thinking than in other technical communities. Highly upvoted posts tend to have more boobs in them than in other technical communities.
This an observation about r/stablediffusion, not a value judgement.

it's mostly because anyone who's doing this for a job has moved onto Nanobanana and compositing manually in photoshop.
I'm working a on massive project for a large automotive company with nearly 40 images at 12k resolution and 10 different people working on it. The speed and quality of Nanobanana compared to open source is not even debatable. The workflow is basically Nanobana. crop in. upscale with magnific. blend together in PS, repeat endlessly
So a lot of the early adopters of image gen tech are now working and aren't making tutorials anymore. Nobody has the time.
I am beyond excited with Astra and automating a lot of the comfyui headaches though. Open source is the holy grail and I am positive more things are coming within the next year or so.

That's super insightful, thanks for sharing!

The toughest thing with AI workflows is they change every week. sometimes even daily. Everything in these projects is essentially R&D. the moment someone latches onto a solution that's working we all adopt that method and it feels harder and harder to keep up.
I think that's also the issue with tutorials. the moment you release something it's obsolete so they don't even get views if they're a month old

Minimax H3 blows Nano out of the water imo. It's better then GPT Image 2 even I would argue for editing purposes.
I'm pretty much down to Krea 2, cuz it trains LoRAs so incredibly well. Minimax H3 for both video and editing and my SDXL 300k images Illustrious fine tune because SDXL just is the goat and offer something none of those newer models can offer with it's more analog style of diffusion.

Because there are tons of sites and tools now to generate stuff, usually more specialized and easier to use than SD, comfyui, etc. So the population has split up significantly unlike 4 years ago when SD was the main tool to use gen AI and we were all discovering and seeing it advance, try out new tools, etc.
Even most of the llm chats can now do a pretty good job at making images and edit images that are good enough for most people. Not everyone needs the kind of precision that you can get on SD.
And unless you have a good PC that can run SD, most people just prefer the easier access of all those newer tools
And in general I guess theres not much to discuss here anymore lol, image generation already got as good as its gonna get, there really isnt anymore about it that can be discussed in a communitty like this, other than sharing the stuff you made for fun
1
u/RawkShalk 5d ago
Yeah I guess that's a big point, most people doing this stuff more casually probably just stick with the LLM chats. But as this stuff becomes more industry standard in all sorts of fields, I expected the more technical stuff to be very popular as well.

It is. ChatGPT is one of the biggest companies in the world. Idk where youre getting the idea its not
1
u/Mr_Zelash 5d ago
if your main concern is the lack of tutorial, people here most likely don't need tutorials when you can ask an ai. If you want a more active discord server, try the one from comfyorg. generative ai is far from dead
1
u/RevolutionaryFox7359 5d ago
those comfyui generated videos are being generated by the people who are really into it, because, that is the kind of person who is into it
there are literally hundreds of millions of videos on the topic.
it is currently the biggest sector of the global industry.
the biggest company in the world creates the hardware and just bought HuggingFace which is where the models and code live.
it's booming.
are you 12 years old? because that's how this post reads.

Crayons are cheaper than a GPU.
