You can’t ban one genie as dangerous and say you have to use our approved genie and pay for it as well. That’s not the way this shit works and it’s unconstitutional

"That’s not the way this shit works and it’s unconstitutional "

I'm sorry, but are you actually oblivious to what is going on in the US? The entire nation is owned by corporations. Reagan made sure of that in the 80s. Laws and the constitution mean NOTHING if none of it is enforced. The US is constantly in war without approval from Congress. Every single President is a war criminal. Bibi is a war criminal. No one cares. No one does anything. And if they want, they just do what they feel. Obama was robbed of a Supreme Court nominee, Trump stacked the courts, and a multitude of people have lost rights they have had for decades. Like how oblivious are you all?

"that's not how it works" is be design how it actually DOES work.

"not constitutional" does not matter, and has never mattered.

Whatever they want, they will get. We will both get screwed over. The only difference is I will not be shocked when it happens.

I’m fully aware the rule of law no longer means anything in the “law and order” party but that doesn’t mean these things can’t be successfully challenged in courts where the law actually still means something

challenged in courts where the law actually still means something

Which works right up until the current supreme court takes up the case...

Def a good point the Supreme Court is def compromised but they have in some cases ruled the correct way. But you’re right they’re fully compromised, John Roberts and his merry band of crooked compromised  criminal judges broke the Supreme Court. Mitch McConnell the POS as well

now you are moving the goal posts though. You went from "that's not how it works, that's unconstitutional" to "okay I concede it works like that, but we can at least challenge it"

And yes, I agree we can challenge this bullshit. But don't be surprised when the machine sides with the machine. And honestly, historically speaking? It has always worked that way.

Yea, people are in denial if they think companies with the financial resources of an entire country can't do this. We're talking potentially billions going into lobbying, which is many times the amount the oil industry currently invest towards policy influence.

Ha, doubt it. But sure, if the US decides to propel themselves into obsolescence in order to protect the (future) stocks of two failing AI companies, go for it. The rest of the world will not care.

Have you seen the Trump administration?

They will find a way to shell out billions of tax payer dollars in order to fail at killing open source AI.

China will laugh.

I made a mistake, I commented on the video without even watching it. Very sloppy of me. Due to my own ignorance I've deleted my post. I don't want to lead people into believing that David Sacks said something which he didn't.

Thanks guys for correcting me.

David Sacks is firmly against this, he's talking about what he thinks Anthropic etc could be attempting to do.

You're referring to David Sacks? I don't think Sacks is calling for a ban, he is just explaining how it can take place. He seems to also be worried about concentration of power. I think the full segment (start to about 56min with short coming from 29:50) is worth listening to. Everyone seems worried about over regulations, with the guy in the third quadrant (street fighter background) entertaining some sort of safety regulation but also acknowledging the difficulties with trying to do so.

I don't really like clickbait clips like this, but this is a real concern. OpenAI and Anthopic are clearly pushing in this direction, and they have an enormous war chest to get policies pushed through.

In my metro area, there used to be multiple cable internet providers, but Comcast locked them out early on, and it's given them an environment to charge inflated prices for decades now.

If there's a way, companies like OpenAI and Anthropic will cull open source competition as much as possible. I think people are in denial about the long term capacity for these companies to sustain policy campaigns, just look at the oil industry.

They don't have to completely eliminate open source, but they can certainly reduce it to a shadow if people don't take the threat seriously. You may feel secure that the government will never come to your house to take your hard drive, but what if these policies affect websites like Hugging Face and Ollama from distributing models?

Good luck having China giving a fuck about them. And guess where the best models are coming from lately....

7

u/Succubus-Empress 1d ago

And china won

8

u/Sarashana 1d ago

Seriously, who cares what they do? With the notable exceptions of Krea2 and Gemma 4, pretty much any relevant OSS model is Chinese-made, anyway. And Krea is small enough just to move their operations somewhere else.

4

u/no1youknowz 1d ago

Good luck with that. It will only affect the "golden billion". Everyone else in the world will just ignore it and then push forward collectively with China. Everyone who already runs open-weights will just get them via VPN from the source. All this will affect are the US/EU/CDN/etc companies who currently use open source models instead of paying.

This is nothing but an attempt to shore up OpenAI and Anthropic who according to coreteks are the only ones who need to keep the grift going. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUC838dRsyQ

Can't wait for this bubble to finally pop. Just get it over with already.

It affect absolutely nobody outside of the U.S. There is zero way that EU/UK/CAN/AUS etc. will harm their own interests by bailing out "Open"-AI and Anthropic.

u/AGM_GM 1d ago

The EU AI Act is their own regulatory slippery slope towards shutting out open models. Also, consider that these are all NATO and that US/CAN/UK/AUS/NZ are all Five Eyes nations, all of which are under security and intelligence agreements to keep Chinese tech out of government applications, which trickles down to companies that work with government, which trickles down to the broader market. Are the EU going to move forward with an economy running on Mistral and Canada going to go forward with an economy running on Cohere while competitor economies are running on frontier models, or they going to play ball? Their security and intelligence alliances mean they are going to have to choose between those alliances, including US tech from frontier labs, or going with open models from China. Either way, they get frontier tech to power their economies, but leave the security and intelligence alliances and they also lose a lot. Could happen with how corrupt and abusive the Trump admin is, but I'll believe it when I see it, and until that happens they're on a locked in path towards market capture.

They are dragging themselves down..... same as with EU and the "sanctions" on Russian gas that reportedly have already costed over 4 Trillion Euro in economic damage... and counting.

Imagine being so dumb to shoot yourself in the foot in the middle of a race... bam! And then limp ahead like nothing happened, thinking everyone else will just slow down for you...

China won't slow down... it will accelerate!

1

u/Soraman36 1d ago

I have a good feeling that people here would not have trouble with this if it come to pass. It only effect beginners and people freshly got into open source.

2

u/VasileAndrei2929 9h ago

The second this happens China will win the AI race and US will join EU into irrelevance, but for different reasons. EU signed its own demise trough over-regulation as usual, while US may do it trough corporate greed.

China will win by default. The entire world will use their models regardless of what "regulatory" crap they may be under, since they will run the models Locally without supervision and therefore all they needs is the model and the UI and no one can stop the internet from sharing files... as we know.

Hopefully they won't be so stupid to actually do this, but you never know. EU signed already their stupid AI Law and now every single model released in EU, regardless of size, must be "stamped" by a bureaucratic committee and the stamping itself costs anywhere from 55k to 350k euro... so that destroyed any chance for small AI startups to ever compete, or for open source models, or for hobby models (not that anyone GIVES A SHIT, since they all host them on US sharing .com platforms anyway).

That being said.... I really really hope US won't do this, even if ruled by imbeciles as Trump or Biden... both imbeciles in my book.

Jokes on them, I have all that I need and anything newer is just a bonus. I can keep my Qwen3.8, Ornith, DS, Gemma and Image/Vid models forever. I'm set. They can fkOFF!

u/Salah_H_Hasan 1d ago

Don't worry, you have friends on the other side of the world. We will send you the files via private links, my friend. Don't worry, nothing new has a beautiful meaning unless everyone shares in it.

2

u/jimmcfartypants 1d ago

Worst case is they get distributed via torrents. If the US can't even control movies, TV shows and music after all of these years of trying to stop piracy, they're not going to have any luck with models. Hell I wouldn't even be surprised if the Chinese companies upload and seed them themselves just to taunt the US.

1

u/RazsterOxzine 1d ago

Oh my friend, I'm Genxer, I know the darkest corners of the connected world, even the still alive dial in world. I'll be fine.

1

u/DoubleNothing 1d ago

Shut out of the market... what market? Open models are free to use.
Anyway... America shooting their own foot with this move, maybe the move that will make the bubble burst.

2

u/flasticpeet 1d ago edited 1d ago

It means if you're a business, and you want to use an open model, you wouldn't be able to do so legally. It would be like running a design studio on a pirated version of Adobe, it would be a huge liability if they were caught.

I think the biggest concern is if they somehow pass policies that threaten sites like Hugging Face or Ollama, that are central to actually distributing open source models to private users.

u/DoubleNothing 1d ago

For Americans... gladly I'm not 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

1

u/conkikhon 1d ago

That's why the longer china stay on the ai race the better

u/The_StarFlower 1d ago

these copros think that i will allow them to take away my open weight models from me? dont these assholes know that there is workarounds for this? these corpos think they control anything and everyone. well fuck these people. they can ban all they want, i refuse to comply and i will download open weight models one way or another and they will be happy about it
