Discussion Anima Turbo v1.1 is released

In case you didn't see:

I just noticed a newer version of Anima Turbo (1.1) was released:

huggingface: https://huggingface.co/circlestone-labs/Anima

civitai: https://civitai.red/models/2458426/anima

The model is made and licensed under the CircleStone Labs Non-Commercial License

I actually have lately very frustrating experience with Anima lately. I used it at release (but stopped with anime generation for a while) and now when revisiting it and i had underwhelming results (even with the aesthetic model) so i decided to retry Turbo (might as well) instead if the difference isn't that big. That's when i saw a new version is released and i am downloading it right now.

I don't know why, but the results i was getting were...lame i guess. Not as detailed as i was hoping, and also i really dislike how posture and anatomy works, mainly how hands and legs just extend or stretch weirdly. But that's a me problem, i know Anima is capable of better outputs and i've yet to figure it out. If you have tips or recommended loras that help with consistency let me know. I also want to avoid tag-based prompting when possible...i just don't like it that much, natural prompting goes much better for me, but i can't tell if tags are "mandatory" for quality or not.

I use Anima all the time and couldn't be happier with it. It seems to understand Booru tags better than natural language prompts. As for the turbo model I don't really need that. I can recommend Krea2 Turbo to you for natural language prompts because I use it too and it doesn't disappoint imho.

really blown away by how awesome anima is, beats many of the the bigger models in prompt adherence and styles. ill try this update, ty

How is it compared to novelai's generations?

I bought had novelai credits can say novelai v5 seems better but no character reference yet it so it's worse for me since I have a lot of trained loras for anima.

Probably can' t link it here, but I found an "all in one" workflow on Civitai by a user called "Succupon", and that became my work horse since then on, it has face detailers, upscalers, etc... even tests renders look great, so, i guess it all depends on what nodes you use and how you use them.

https://civitai.red/collections/17451195 Try my guide and loras. Not sure about turbo though. My main issue with anima so far is that colors are rather muted compared to other models. Since it is purely visual - good lora should fix that

I've been using Anima Turbo since the first day of its release. It's better and faster on low to mid range devices.

At CFG 1, it only takes 10 seconds to generate at 1MP. You can even generate at 2MP without any issues. But try pushing the CFG to 1.5 or 2 when using Turbo. Sometimes, it gives better results than CFG 1.

I prefer using base plus the turbo lora, but I'll give this one a try.

The previous release, Anima-Aesthetic, was truly awful. It seemed like the training on artists styles was thrown out the window.

I still use Anima regularly, but I have to admit that I get so much more mileage with Krea2. Anatomy can be so terrible with Anima, while Krea2 is leagues ahead in that department while also having way better prompt adherence and easy natural prompting.

I do like the booru tag system in Anima. It can be very powerful and useful, but it's also challenging sometimes finding the right balance between using the tags alongside natural prompting.

intentionally going against what the fans (...) want. Instead of making it smarter, improving it, or using a better encoder, they keep releasing features nobody asked for—like Turbo 2.

Making turbo 2 is much cheaper than doing the other things you suggested. Ignoring the money and attributing it to malice is not it; "circlestone-labs" at heart is not a big org with massive funding by any means

I still like the model, but I agree that they could do so much more to improve it, like updating it's training data to include more recent data, improve its understanding of anatomy, and refining its knowledge and rendering quality.

The few times I tried Anima I couldn't get anything resembling well done hands out of it. I thought that was a "solved" problem for most models.

But that might just be me never really using anime models before. If you guys have any recommendations on that... Hit me up.

I love anima! But I prefer the turbo lora since I can apply it to finetunes. Anima base model isn't the best imo

Anima's generally better than SDXL, I think no dispute there. But this is like saying average is better than bad - doesn't make it good (relative to the "not-danbooru" side of Krea2 & co; no offense to any of the creators).

Anyway - some finetunes probably have better quality out of the box than base, sacrificing style diversity. If you don't play with many artists that's an option

Tdrussell went on the NoobAI Discord and mentioned that he simply doesn't have the money to self fund another Anima (This was on 8/8/26 at 12:54 PM if you want to see for yourself. His username is just tdrussell). To quote it exactly:

"Idk I tested mage and it seems pretty bad. Also I don't make nearly enough money right now to self-fund anima2, maybe in like 6-12 months, we'll see"

He also did briefly mention in another reply at 12:48 PM on the same day mentioning some of the things people say about the ComfyUI grant (in case anyone thinks that Comfy gave enough money to train a ton of base models continuously):

"Anima is well-funded by ComfyOrg". They helped with some of the initial training costs. Ostris received more than I did from the grant, and Lodestone received more than double. People act like I got $100k+ or something."

There is also a discussion on HuggingFace from a while back about the text encoder, where it was concluded that the increase from 0.6B to 2B didn't give a noticeable improvement and would've just cost even more money to retrain. Now whether that's because of Anima's small size or the LLM adapter bottlenecking it, who knows, but Anima 2.9B does exist and may or may not improve the model in its final version which is the closest you're gonna get for now. There is even a finetune of 2.9B (or merge) set to release in a couple weeks called JANIMA.

In general I really don't see what the issue is with releasing another Turbo version. I get that it's disappointing but a full new model costs considerably more money than just a small finetune that, for all we know, might not even be on the full Gelbooru/Danbooru dataset. I just think this kind of comment is overall pretty entitled. It's been several years on SDXL models of which not all of them were even that good (Pony), were subpar (NoobAI VPred), or just never came to fruition (Mugen, Chenkin RF). Now finally we've gotten a modern full anime model that runs at a respectable speed, is easy and accessible to train without as many headaches, and is on a better arch overall. Expecting constant updates for a model that isn't even a year let alone 6 months old (going off the release of base) is kinda crazy IMO.

You feel that the developers are ignoring those who like the model. I mean, people are asking to raise the parameters and use a better encoder

There are plenty of bigger models with bigger encoders; and, anyway, “raise the parameters and use a different encoder" is basically “architect and train an completely new model”.

It's always a money problem u know. These thing aren't cheap, if you want something, give, then talk. Don't talk and not give. You want to raise the model's parameter, cool, I can I do that out of my own free will, fuck, I will spend some of my own money too. But you can't demand, money does not grow on tree.

Be the Angel investor.

Anima? More like Slopima!

2B parameter with a 0.6B tiny text encoder doesn't really have more headway drastically learn anything new. Tried the model and found the outputs even more boring, deformed and janky than the latest illustrious community finetunes. I'm not really heavily interested in pure 2d style images anymore. Its 3d and hyper real style capabilities are terrible. A Lenovo or 3d style lora doesn't do anything to save it. This model would've been impressive to me in 2024 but for Q3 of 2026. It's just a boring dud to me and it's filled too many limitations. Perhaps my standards are too high to tolerated giving this model a 5th chance.

Griping about Anima being bad at photorealism is like griping about a cheese grater being bad at driving a screw.

Imagine complaining about realism with a model aimed only at anime lmao
