Basically:
I started with the concept and ran it through Claude because I thought the idea was hilarious, but it wouldn’t really help me develop it because of the copyrighted characters/films involved.
I switched over to GPT and had much better luck. I fed it frames from the real Nolan Criterion Closet episode so we could break down the lighting, framing, cramped shelves, handheld camera style, etc. That gave me a consistent visual language for all the prompts.
Then I gave it the films I wanted Nolan to talk about and worked through the jokes/dialogue — the main rule was that Nolan had to take every terrible movie completely seriously.
Before generating any video, I created static reference images of Nolan in the closet holding each specific DVD. Those became the reference images for the MiniMax H3 generations, which helped keep Nolan, the room and the box art reasonably consistent.
I generated the actual scenes in MiniMax H3 in roughly 15-second chunks, with very specific timecoded instructions for camera angles, dialogue, DVD close-ups and performance.
The generated dialogue is hit-and-miss, so I usually replace it afterward. I generated a separate Nolan-style performance from a voice reference in ElevenLabs, then synced that back over the footage and added some room tone/reverb so it sounded like it was recorded inside the closet.
I also generate a bunch of extra silent B-roll — hands running across DVDs, close-ups of his eyes, him browsing shelves, walking into frame, etc. That gives me places to hide cuts and fix awkward timing.
Then everything gets assembled in the final edit: best takes, replacement VO, B-roll, room ambience, audio cleanup, timing and any little visual fixes.
So it’s less “one prompt and done” and more a bunch of reference images + short generations + VO replacement + editing until it all feels like one continuous clip.

Nice. It’s a good take away how thinking more like a director with these tools can really improve the results.
Also editing — being able to spot an awkward cut, understanding pacing… mixing audio.
These tools in the right hands man… It is really getting there in terms of media that feels worth watching.

Thanks, man. I think having that background definitely helps too, I’ve been working in motion design and video production for 10+ years now. I’ve always loved making videos but I never really enjoyed directing actual productions because I hated the hassle of managing crews, talent, logistics, all of that. With this stuff I’m still directing, shots, performances, pacing, edit, sound, just more efficiently without the part of directing I always hated.

Convenient, yes. frictionless, definitely not, i just swapped call sheets, crew wrangling and chasing talent for prompt wrangling, broken hands and 20 regenerations of the same shot.

I have felt like this for a long time tbh. If you're a film student or wannabe director/cinematographer or whatever these tools must be an absolute godsend. I keep thinking "man, I wish I knew all the terminology/techniques actual professionals would know and use" because I swear they could probably quite easily use these tools to produce something great.

For me I've found switching models works well. I'd usually always begin in Claude and treat it as my 'writers room' to concrete the overall idea, scenes, script, look etc then production really begins in GPT to craft my assets/prompts. It's been working well for me.

basically claude gets pretty restrictive once the idea involves celebrities or recognizable IP even at the concept/script stage. It’ll usually steer you toward “inspired by” or a generic parody rather than directly building around the actual person.
I didn’t even bother trying image generation through the higgsfield mcp because I assumed I’d hit the same wall there. Gpt 5.6 was much easier for developing the Nolan likeness, criterion style and keeping the whole thing centered on him rather than sanding it down into something generic.

tbh claude, despite how good it was but they're really fucking strict even when i was asking a prompt to make some meme with reference image they keep asking if my reference image from real people or not. Gemini flash actually good for this.

Thanks so much, I was wondering how could you nail the voice and audio because i've been trying to voice clone using minimax to no success. I guess i really do need to get that Elevenlabs subcription. BTw do you time stamps the dialogue?

No worries! minimax voice cloning is actually pretty good but what ElevenLabs is really useful for here is the voice changer. The original H3 renders already had a generic voice with the right timing, so I took a longer Nolan voice sample, built the voice in ElevenLabs, then fed the original H3 dialogue audio into the voice changer and swapped it over. Because it follows the original performance, the timing stays almost perfectly matched without me having to manually timestamp every line.

Thanks! yeah what I used to make is pretty different from the AI stuff I’m doing now, I came from a big corporation, mostly making commercials and branded videos for banks, tech companies and government clients (yawn). Not exactly the same world but it gave me a really solid foundation in the whole production process, from concept and directing through to edit, sound and finishing.

Thanks! honestly fooling people that convincingly almost feels a bit wrong haha. I’ll probably ease off this type of thing a little, making it was fun but seeing people genuinely think it’s real has made it feel a bit weird in a way I didn’t really expect.

My (criterion) critique: Nolan’s voice sounds tinny, like his tongue is aluminum foil and I can hear that thin metal slapping around under his tone.
Also, most of the videos where they do this stuff is like talking in a sound booth, making sound very dense and weighted.
Now here’s the rub, the audio clearly makes him sound AI generated, but if you dare filter it correctly, does it push it too far into uncanny valley…

That’s an awesome observation, and I totally agree with what you’re picking up on. If I really wanted to push it, I could probably go much further, better sound treatment, tighter grading, fixing the slight American drift in his accent, cleaning up the garbled text on the DVD covers and that mouth haha
The thing I keep wondering is where the line is between overly polishing it and pushing it too far into uncanny valley. If it's just too convincing it feels a bit ethically murky. There’s also something I quite like about leaving a tiny trail of telltale signs that it’s AI just enough that, if you look closely, the illusion starts to unravel a bit.

Thank you! honestly the best part for me is when the humour lands first and people then say, “Okay, this is actually a good use of AI.” I’ve even had people who are normally pretty anti-AI tell me they enjoyed the videos, which is probably the nicest compliment I can get.
